DD has requested olives which ones are the best?

Dd who will be 7 next week has requested olives to try, a friend of hers had them in her packed lunch. I eat pretty much most things but I'm not keen on olives so it is not something I would normally buy, so what are the nicest olives and where to buy? I have seen Waitrose deli counter do a black and green mix with feta cheese for £1.99 per 100g is something like that best or just the pots of plain fresh pitted olives? Thank you fellow olive eaters.
P.s I don't care where I buy said olives only mentioned waitrose deli mix as it popped up at the top of my Google search.

I like green ones and black ones - but not everyone likes both - they do taste different. i think i;d buy a mixed pot and let her try them.
The ones in pots with other stuff (like feta) often have a garlic dressing - so check in case she's not keen on that.
I get the pots rather than jars of olives because I find the jars very salty.
I'd try chopping serving some with various bits and pieces - tomatoes, bits of cheese, bread sticks, chopped peppers, or on pizzas, in pasta etc.
I do love olives but tend to treat them as an accompaniment - they are quite rich if you just sit down and eat a load with nothing else.

PointlessUsername · 10/12/2018 14:21

Black i find less salty.

KurriKurri · 10/12/2018 14:22

I buy them anywhere that sells them -tesco usually (they do a plain mixed pot) or Marks.
I wouldn't buy those kind of vacuum packed sachets - they taste horrible.

OkToday · 10/12/2018 14:26

Thank you KurriKurri that makes sense about serving them with other bits and pieces. Dd is lucky not fussy and so far I have found nothing she won't eat which is good so not to worried about dressing. Maybe I will got for a pot of black, pot of green and some deli mixed ones, I can always give them to someone else if she is not keen. Where is the best place to buy them?

Thank you for the suggestion Joinourclub, I find Waitrose good for most things.

Black olives are the work of the devil. Only occasionally acceptable on pizza, sparingly

OkToday · 10/12/2018 14:39

Waitrose looks like the place to go then, maybe I will take dd after school and let her pick some to try.

Do get her both green and black types because they do taste different, as above. I’d avoid the stuffed / dressed sort so she can experience the olive itself and decide whether she likes it.

sashh · 10/12/2018 14:43

True black olives have the pips in, pitted ones are green olives coloured black.

Tesco are currently doing a selection which is nice. www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/299916784

I wouldn't necessarily go for which are the best, go for what she likes.

Olives can be stuffed with various things, stored in oil or brine, mixed with herbs and or garlic or lemon. Maybe let her try a few at a deli counter?

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 10/12/2018 14:45

All the major supermarkets have mixed style deli pots, can't comment on Waitrose as we don't have one where I am.

hopeful31yrs · 10/12/2018 14:47

I'd let her try them first - I hate them, and she may when she young. Save the embarrassment of 1) having to regurgitate them in front of friends and 2) not having a snack that day!

OkToday · 10/12/2018 14:50

I would definitely let her try them at home first no worries there.

Green nocellara (waitrose).
They have stones in but are good for nibbling.

Green nocellara are the nicest ( they are firm and have stones in them, nice fresh light taste).

Next best are pitted queen olives.

Black olives I find to be squishy and have an unpleasant taste., but some poeple obviously like them.

Youmadorwhat · 10/12/2018 16:53

Black pitted are a fave here with my 5 and 3 year old

Branleuse · 10/12/2018 17:17

really dont bother with pitted olives. They lose all their texture once theyve had the stone removed.

Bluesheep8 · 10/12/2018 17:21

I love pitted black olives. Any kind. I was under the impression that all olives start off green but then when ripened they go black? In the same way as peppers start off green then go yellow, orange, red the riper they get..hence they get sweeter?.or an I wrong?

Madbengalmum · 10/12/2018 17:24

Waitrose black Kalamata olives are the best, least salty of them all. I find the large green ones abit much tbh. Kamata variety is renowed for its superior quality.

Saisong · 10/12/2018 17:24

My kids like both black and green pitted olives. From any supermarket. They are in brine, but you can wash off the worst of it. The problem with unpitted olives is the choking risk. They also love cornichons and baby silver onions!

witchmountain · 10/12/2018 17:31

Definitely green nocerella. Delicious!

LittleLlamaontheduskyroad · 10/12/2018 17:43

I prefer green ones, as do my DDs (olive addicts.) They are tangier than the black ones.

I particularly like the ones stuffed with pimento or garlic, however I'd probably just get pitted ones for a 7 year old to try.

The jars are cheaper than the deli counter ones.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 10/12/2018 17:45

I prefer black olives too. Any deli types are good. I like them with chilli and feta.
