I need a new TV series to love as much as The Detectorists....

A year on, I am still mourning the end of The Detectorists.

I don't watch a lot of TV, but over the years I have loved and bingewatched

Gavin and Stacey
Stella
Car Share
The Detectorists
Phoenix Nights

All gentle, subtle tales of people going about their everyday lives, with the subtleties of longstanding friendships I suppose. Also

The Inbetweeners, Fresh Meat and Friday Night Dinner

Anything else I can obsess over this Christmas ?

It's hard to imagine anything quite paralleling The Detectorists. There's stuff I've seen lately that's as good, but different good. There's not much comedic magic realism about, it's a bit of a niche genre 😉

I'm not sure where you can get it, but we really enjoyed Boomers. The cast is pretty impressive. And Hold the Sunset. Both low-key but sillier than Detectorists.

Lately, we've also rewatched the first series of The Office. It is so good. And I'm Alan Partridge. I love it when you forget how funny something was. Oddly, rewatching The Thick of It didn't work- I guess reality is weirder than fiction nowadays....

Frasier! I'm craving a Frasier fix now!

One more....on Netflix there's two series of Friday Night Dinner. I'd never heard of it, just stumbled across it. It's about a Barnet Jewish family ( with Tamsin Grieg as the materfamilias) and set each Friday night dinner. It's not hilarious ( actually sometimes it is) but very wry, with great characters. If you know that community at all, it's also brilliantly observed.

spiderlight · 10/12/2018 17:16

Oh yes - we love Friday Night Dinner. Mark Heap and Wilson!

EnidButton · 10/12/2018 17:21

I've really liked a lot of the ones suggested but none of them have the same feel exactly of Detectorists, except Mum which comes very close. Plus there's a scene during the second series that I honestly Oscar worthy and had me sobbing for half an hour afterwards Blush

AnyFucker · 10/12/2018 17:27

Which scene was that Enid ? I think everyone on the thread has seen the show so shouldn't spoil it for anyone

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 10/12/2018 17:27

Catastrophe and W1A - yes.

MissMarplesKnitting · 10/12/2018 18:10

Oh I adored the Cafe! I so wanted another season of that.

TheLastQueenOfPop · 10/12/2018 18:27

Another vote for Early Doors. The ordinary and mundane it certainly does

The80sweregreat · 10/12/2018 19:21

Enid: I loved Mum too! Was it the bit where the dad was thinking and talking about his son? Very moving.
The detectorists was also excellent viewing ; subtle funny and poignant.
I think Mum is back next year ( hope so)

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 10/12/2018 19:27

Dinnerladies? Although I'm sure you've seen it.

My favourite current series is Brooklyn Nine Nine. It's where Andy Samberg went off to when he left Cuckoo.

EnidButton · 10/12/2018 21:52

The80's No, although that bit was moving too, it was

SPOILER FOR THE SITCOM MUM COMING UP

the bit when they're in the kitchen and Michael declares his love for Cathy and she kind of turns him down because she's scared. There's silence and Peter Mullan's face is heartbreaking without him even saying a word. 😭 I cried buckets Blush

The80sweregreat · 11/12/2018 06:44

enid, of course, i had forgotten that bit. yes, he is a brilliant actor.

spiderlight · 11/12/2018 09:15

That bit got me too - his face.

Some of the granddad's performances were astonishing too, in their own subtle way. I adored Mum - can't wait for series 3. I think I might have to watch it all again over Christmas.

SearchingforYouth · 11/12/2018 09:20

Have you watched The Trip (Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon) or Fleabag (BBC 3 - might be available on iPlayer)?

They are both funny, touching series.

Can't say they beat Detectorists though. That was pure brilliance.

NancyDonahue · 11/12/2018 09:39

Young Sheldon is lovely. Very sweet and family centered.

I agree you will find it difficult to beat The Detectorists.

Eponymous · 11/12/2018 10:07

I second Derek. Totally not what I expected from Ricky Gervais.

Crimbobimbo · 11/12/2018 13:09

Where could I watch Mum?

JeremyCorbynsBeard · 11/12/2018 13:21

Green Wing (a bit off the wall)
Kingdom - used to be on Sunday nights. Starred Stephen Fry.
Doc Martin

Evidencebased · 11/12/2018 18:53

Ooh, I'd love to watch Green Wing again, where can I find that, please?

MrsBobtonTrent · 11/12/2018 22:40

Just watched green wing on all4. I enjoyed it, but it hasn’t aged well.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 11/12/2018 22:54

Totally agree about green wing not aging well, I'm very sad about that. It's on All4, Evidencebased.

The Kominsky Method on netflix is quite good.
