I need a new TV series to love as much as The Detectorists....

A year on, I am still mourning the end of The Detectorists.

I don't watch a lot of TV, but over the years I have loved and bingewatched

Gavin and Stacey
Stella
Car Share
The Detectorists
Phoenix Nights

All gentle, subtle tales of people going about their everyday lives, with the subtleties of longstanding friendships I suppose. Also

The Inbetweeners, Fresh Meat and Friday Night Dinner

Anything else I can obsess over this Christmas ?

If you don’t mind it being American rather than British, can I suggest Parks and Recreation. The first series is very short and setting the scene but after that are series and series of fabulous characters you will learn to love. Again it’s not all action but it is utterly brilliant. I love all the series you mentioned (agree about Rev too) but actually haven’t seen the detectorists so that’s going to be the next series I try!

I am seconding parks and rec. the first series is a bit rubbish but they realised that at the time so changed it from the second series on. It’s so lovely, I love all of the characters and it’s all about their friendships and just fairly normal life in small town America. Plus, it’s hilarious and has rob Lowe as an obsessive clean-living fitness freak.

Definitely Mum.
Genius. Gentle and sublime. The acting is stunning.
Not all episodes on iplayer but boxset available from Amazon.

Should have said that I think parks and rec is on prime (I have the whole 7 series box set Grin)

AnyFucker · 10/12/2018 07:34

Tried Fresh Meat. It's just the Inbetweeners at Uni. Bit disappointed.

BikeRunSki · 10/12/2018 08:00

Is P&R that good? DH loves it, I’ve never really thought it was that entertaining. Might give it another go.

Yes it is BikeRunSki - like all the quiet sitcoms it grows on you!

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 10/12/2018 09:35

The only thing that comes close to Detectorists for me is Early Doors - it's several years ago and I've no idea if you can get it online (we have dvds). Same gentle, affectionate, poking fun at the characters' foibles but you get very attached.

Juanmorebeer · 10/12/2018 09:42

Try Derek.

spiderlight · 10/12/2018 10:28

'Mum' is the only thing that holds a candle to 'Detectorists', if you ask me.

TheKurgan · 10/12/2018 10:55

Please Like Me (on Amazon Prime). Funny and poignant.

BellMcEnd · 10/12/2018 11:01

The Cafe
Grace and Frankie

Fun fact: my brother was the lead cameraman on Detectorists. He is responsible for all the little close ups of snails on leaves and bees on flowers Smile

Imnotswallowingthat · 10/12/2018 11:09

Early Doors - written by Craig Cash - is brilliant. Set in a back street Manchester pub, the characters are wonderfully written. Great cast too including Cash, John Henshaw, Mark Benton, James McAvoy and Maxine Peak.

spiderlight · 10/12/2018 11:13

Bell Those little touches made it. He's a genius.

mrsm43s · 10/12/2018 11:21

Mum and The Cafe are both great and have a similar vibe to The Detectorists.

AnyFucker · 10/12/2018 11:29

You can watch full episodes of Early Doors on You Tube. Very "Royle Family" vibe, not surprisingly

ItWentDownMyHeartHole · 10/12/2018 11:31

Gone Fishing is so funny. It sounds like an insane thing to want to watch but it’s perfect. Young Offenders is brilliant. There’s a kiss in it that you won’t be able to forget. It’s revolting and sweet all at the same time.

Bell The gorgeous bits of nature along with the music made it so special. Your brother is definitely a genius.

Crimbobimbo · 10/12/2018 11:36

Love sick on Netflixs. The first episode confused me a bit so in left it, but loads of people raved about it so I went back. Really enjoyed it.

MrsTommyBanks · 10/12/2018 13:12

Still Game. One of my favourites. I'm sure I read that all previous series are going to be on iPlayer over Christmas.

Daisywho · 10/12/2018 14:02

Twenty Twelve and W1A are really good. The Detectorists and Gavin & Stacey are perfection though - very hard to find anything that compares imo! I am desperate to re-binge-watch Car Share but it’s not on iplayer! Angry

The Royle Family? Might be going a bit off piste but Frasier gives me the same joy as all of these, me and DH rewatch the whole box set every year or so!

SantaBabycharly · 10/12/2018 14:04

Another vote for "Gone Fishing "

haverhill · 10/12/2018 14:10

This Country.
Roger and Val Have Just Got In (with Dawn French and Alfred Molina)
Jam and Jerusalem
Wild West (Dawn French and Catherine Tate - weird but good)

buttybuttychristmastree · 10/12/2018 14:16

Gone fishing !!

NancyDonahue · 10/12/2018 14:19

A big yes to 'Mum'. It's sublime.

We've started watching Downton Abbey again. It's been so long since it was on that we've forgotten a lot of the storylines so it's almost like watching it from scratch. It's great for the long winter evenings.

BikeRunSki · 10/12/2018 15:32

Ah Frasier @Daisymoo. We have about 7 seasons on dvd, and they always come on holiday with us.

I don’t want laugh out loud comedy. It’s the ordinariness of Detectorists and G&S that I love.
