What can you remember that makes you seem ancient?

I remember us getting our very first colour TV.

I can remember a rag and bone man coming up my granny’s street - can’t remember if it was a horse drawn trailer or not.

Granny had an Anderson shelter.

I remember not having to wear seatbelts.

When everyone used to smoke at work and in pubs.

I liked the sweet "cigarettes" too. With a bit of red food colouring on the end to mimic the flame!

I remember our class being shown into the school library where the school's only computer sat in state under its beige dustsheet, which was gingerly removed to allow a display of the new Electronic Mail. Duh, I thought, this thing will never catch on. Who can read their mail on a computer they aren't even allowed to touch, and which would have to be shared with the school's 2000 other pupils anyway? A computer lab did appear in the school not long after, but I didn't get another glimpse of the World Wide Web or Electronic Mail for a good decade after that first demonstration. I graduated without having even once used the internet or even a computer in the course of my degree, which was normal when I matriculated but already decidedly luddite by the time I graduated. I typed my thesis on the manual typewriter from Hell, which should really have sold me on PCs and desktop publishing, as nobody calls it now.

I had Clothkits clothes and a cool. I now live in the town where there is an actual Clothkits shop - you can still buy the clothes and dolls.

Yes to white dogs poo! And dogs just walking around the streets by themselves.
Tufty club
Children's savings stamps and green shield stamps
His masters voice gramophone
Yogurt being introduced to the UK
Jelly in little glass jars
A bar of chocolate that was like a whole box of chocolates moulded together... Can't remember the name....getting old!!!
Gypsy creams
Camp coffee...yuk!
Sunday afternoon drive...for no particular reason
Standing for the national anthem in the cinema
Only having the choice between blue or pink for NHS glasses
Doing PE in my knickers
Girls not being allowed to do woodwork and boys not being allowed to do cooking at school....explains a lot!

Only a handful of people in our street had cars. My mum still lives there and it's almost impossible to get parked now.
Two ounces of sweets weighed out on scales. That was half my weekly pocket money gone.
Rental TV. Black and white. Giving it a bang when the horizontal hold went.
Top loader video recorder with a wired 'remote' control. Only my dad knew how to operate the damn thing and we all kept tripping over the trailing remote control lead.

Just remembered we had a Super Ser gas heater which we wheeled around the place. Sometimes it even got bumped up the stairs to heat one of the bedrooms, gas cylinder and all. Bloody hellShock

We were the first family on the street to get a TV. It was delivered on a Saturday morning, every child on the street was in our house to watch, "the man setting the TV up".

The man had to wait for Tom and Jerry as the sports programmes were still in black and white. It was quite exciting to look at the TV listings and see what would be in colour.

Using a telex machine at work.

The school getting a computer, a single computer to teach computer studies not for the admin staff.

Schools having phone numbers for neighbours because not everyone had a phone.

The great majority of things already mentioned on this thread.

I was born in 1966. My children (all virtually grown up now) seem to think I was already ancient the day I was born! Grin

Ha'pennies in old money. Winston Churchill's funeral, JFK's assassination. Being scared about something on the radio that must have been the Cuban missile crisis (DB and I asked our mum if there was going to be another world war).

Lovingbenidorm · 09/12/2018 03:22

Oh the memories!

Lovingbenidorm · 09/12/2018 03:24

Lovingbenidorm · 09/12/2018 03:29

Also (am really going to bed now) why don’t we see white dog poo anymore?

Armchairanarchist · 09/12/2018 03:52

My first home telephone number only had three digits, 256.

Natalieburney · 09/12/2018 04:06

'British bull dog', "off ground touch", "kiss chase' all games in playground.

abbsisspartacus · 09/12/2018 05:37

Isn't white dog poo because of bones?
