What can you remember that makes you seem ancient?

I remember us getting our very first colour TV.

I can remember a rag and bone man coming up my granny’s street - can’t remember if it was a horse drawn trailer or not.

Granny had an Anderson shelter.

I remember not having to wear seatbelts.

When everyone used to smoke at work and in pubs.

Sindy, never ever Barbie

Papergirl1968 · 17/12/2018 18:24

A comic or kids magazine with Silly Billy and Nurse Susan and Doctor David in it, for kids aged around five. It might have been called Twinkle, I can’t remember. Better than the rubbish today which kids on,y want for the plastic tat on the front cover.
Then when I got to about ten a new magazine came out called a Girl, I think. My older sisters had Loving, full of teen romances. Then when I was about 16, out came Just 17.
Learning to read with Peter and Jane books, which I think replaced the earlier Janet and John series.

Janet and John were replaced by Kathy, Mark and Socks ( a dog).
Peter and Jane were from the Ladybird reading scheme.

Traffic lights on black and white poles, and with the word "Stop" in the red light. They were still seen in the 1980s.

Explaining the Millennium Bug to my teenage pupils, and realising that they weren't even born then! Learning about the total eclipse due in 1999, and thinking that this seemed an eternity away in 1989.

whispertomegently · 18/12/2018 10:57

@strawberrisc oh yes, that brings back happy memories.

My sisters and I would save all our pocket money for ages to buy these.

Getting our first tv for the 1966 world cup and my dad falling off the chair with excitement when England won! I was 10

BirthdayCakes · 18/12/2018 11:26

I have two bosses, not much older than me.

One remembers having a peat fire heating her classroom (Irish, not sure if that's relevant), and the other remembers waking up to ice on the inside of his bedroom window in winter. I just find it extraordinary that these things happened so relatively recently..

strawberrisc · 18/12/2018 11:30

We had ice inside our windows in the days before double glazing! We also had no central heating. We lived in a Barrett house and there was one air vent at the bottom of the stairs. When my sister and I were little my Mum would bathe us and then huddle us around the vent with a towel! Funny thing is, I never remember feeling hard done by.

JaneJeffer · 18/12/2018 11:58

Birthday I also remember having an open turf (as we call it) fire in the classroom and I miss those old windows where you got the Jack Frost patterns.

kalefire · 18/12/2018 12:08

I remember when sky was only 9 channels -
1 Sky one
2 sky news
3 sky movies
4 sports
5 discovery stuff?
6 kids
7 music
8 ?
9 ?

And the remote was coffin shaped Xmas Grin

Going to Guide camp in the back of a removal van, sitting on the kit. The top half of the door was open so we could inhale the exhaust fumes.

tierraJ · 18/12/2018 13:19

Halfpenny sweets at the corner shop!

AlexaAmbidextra · 18/12/2018 17:56

9 tv channels was an embarrassment of riches! When we got our first telly in the 50s there was only one channel. Yes, one, the BBC. I remember later getting a set that could receive the new ITV channel and being entranced by the commercials. Now I loathe the bloody things.

MadisonAvenue · 18/12/2018 17:59

I remember when most of my clothes were handmade, either sewn or knitted.

Petalflowers · 18/12/2018 21:29

Having to switch channels on the tv, rather than using remotes.

Black and white tv. I remember seeing Orville and Emu in colour and thinking they were hideous colours.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 18/12/2018 21:58

Reading just seventeen and mizz.

JaneJeffer · 18/12/2018 23:10

I loved Just17. I remember getting the first issue free with Smash Hits. What was the name of the beauty magazine that came out around that time does anyone remember?

wakemewhenitsallover · 19/12/2018 00:05

My mum making Cloth Kits clothes.

BoswellsLastStand · 19/12/2018 00:26

When people used to answer a land line phone by saying the phone number or sometimes the place and the phone number like

"Whitehall 1212" or more like "Swindon 5898"

MadisonAvenue · 19/12/2018 00:35

@JaneJeffer Are you thinking of Looks? I have some old issues of that somewhere.

JaneJeffer · 19/12/2018 00:48

Yes Madison that's it!

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 19/12/2018 00:50

Rushing home from primary school to watch jackanory. Mum was still at work so I had my own door key that was on a bit of tape around my neck. Very few children were collected from school and most of us were walking at least half a mile home on our own by 7.

strawberrisc · 19/12/2018 06:31

Our first video recorder. Massive tapes that you had to put into an ejected slot and push back down again. Push down, sticking out buttons. Remote control on a lead!

If you didn’t rewind your videos the shop would fine you. Took forever to rewind and the most hired videos were really bad quality.
