What can you remember that makes you seem ancient?

I remember us getting our very first colour TV.

I can remember a rag and bone man coming up my granny’s street - can’t remember if it was a horse drawn trailer or not.

Granny had an Anderson shelter.

I remember not having to wear seatbelts.

When everyone used to smoke at work and in pubs.

pierrot clown....that thing was everywhere...

"Being born in 1992 makes me feel old." ODFOD! 😂

Do you mean yourself or others?

My ex part of his job was making sure soldiers who were due to be deployed from his lot had their passports up to date. The first time he had to check one of someone born in 1980 he said he felt like asking for a Zimmer frame! He said similar at the 1990 born point. He retired just before it got to the point of 2000 born soldiers. He does actually look bloody ancient though now! But then 5 unplanned kids, several affairs and being an arsehole deadbeat will probably do that to you! Seriously I caught a glimpse on FB recently and if I saw him in st I would walk right by not recognising him!

"And being able to tell which posters are the same vintage as me" yes there are certain commonalities. I think I'm also spotting those of same age as my youngest aunt and uncle (parents both from BIG families and eldest's, and both of these were 'surprise' late babies so closer in age to me than my parents).

Pierrot - omg yes my 13 year old bedroom looked like the factory had vomited all over it! Bedding, curtains, posters, cushions...

Justaboy · 11/12/2018 21:09

Life was hard work in those days.

Yes so it was but we manged:)

Yes well miss that too now we get a weeks worth at the supermarket! Miss having it deliverd but its almost a quid a pint and at Tesco what? £1.41 for Six pints?.

tobee · 11/12/2018 21:12

No Nonsense cartridge pens. Pencils that smelt of lemon or strawberry when you sharpened them. Loved both of those.

Yes indeed nylon bed linen! My high faulting sister suddenly decided she wanted cotton! What's wrong with having electric shocks with sparks when you get into bed?! Grin

tobee · 11/12/2018 21:15

Also, our rental tv often started smoking and you had to get the repair man round.

Going into pubs or function rooms in the daytime and it stinking of stale fags and beer.

mouthkisses · 11/12/2018 21:16

Rosie Webster being born on Corrie. In the back of Don Brennan's cab.

HeronLanyon · 11/12/2018 21:30

We used to cool the top of our wooden tv with an ice tray to hide fact we had been watching (weren’t allowed to watch much) beforenthey came home. The wood started warping and was water stained. We admitted that to our ma only recently sibling and I were worried. We’re bloody adults ! Grin we ended up all laughing. Phew !

KP crisps costing 2p a bag
Ice forming inside your windows overnight
Paraffin heaters and gas camping stoves during the power cuts
The “Save it!” energy campaign
Only 3 TV channels, and the closedown at night
Cassette tapes
Nylon bedsheets
Vesta curries and Ski yoghurts

The blackouts in the early 70s.

Going to the next door neighbour to use their telephone and leaving them 10p for the call.
Running out when you heard the rag n bone man.
Going to the wash house every Thursday with my Mam after school.

MadisonAvenue · 11/12/2018 21:57

Candlewick bedspreads.

The breadman delivering to the house.

The mad scramble to find candles in the cupboard under the sink when we had a powercut, and my Mom dripping candle wax onto cold saucers so that it would set to stand the candles on (we weren't posh enough to have candlesticks).

In the early 80s being terrified of the prospect of nuclear war, especially after seeing Threads. And the start of Two Tribes still gives me the chills.

OhTheRoses · 11/12/2018 22:34

The candlewick has reminded me of grannie's bolster.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 11/12/2018 23:07

Is candkewich sort of large cord bit a bit softer? My gm has a pair of yellow bedspreads I wish I had them.

Doilies

Queenofthedrivensnow · 11/12/2018 23:08

And antimacassars

HeronLanyon · 11/12/2018 23:12

Well I can name something that makes me seem really stupid. Candle wick triggered. Was going to describe it as thin cotton with wavy stripe of softer high piled fluffy cotton ‘a bit like the wick of a candle’. Never ever even thought why it was called that Blush

I remember watching Kimba the White Lion on TV. Once when I was in the UK, I literally ran into Tim Brooke Taylor in the supermarket. (I crashed into his ankles and apologised - poor man.) He mused about why it was only Aussies who recognised him - I explained that when we were growing up, there were only three channels to choose from, and at 6pm, we had a choice of News (boring), News (boring) or the Goodies - which made him instantly recognisable to all small kids growing up in the 70's and 80's (because the ABC wasn't big on buying new tv shows). Then he understood completely. I also admitted to him that prior to the Goodies coming on, they invested in Danger Mouse, which was fabulous, because it got rid of Roger Ramjet!

justilou1 · 11/12/2018 23:20

Oh, beds that sagged in the middle because of the number of people that had slept there prior.....
Chenille bedspreads. (ew.)
Linoleum flooring.
Flocked wallpaper (To really hold in the smell and the stains from the chain-smoking parents -bleurgh) - Usually in orange, purple, Burgundy, mustard or turquoise. Ours was in our kitchen to hold the grease smells as well. (And it was mustard, to go with the Orange formica bench tops and dark brown cupboards.)
Vinyl everything furniture - especially my favourite dining chair at my grandmother's that made fart noises when you sat down

organiseandbrewery · 11/12/2018 23:36

The smell of Copydex glue.

When they still did the Chartreuse Cream in Terry's All Gold Chocolates. Or was it Black Magic?

The copier at my old school - that produced pale blue copies and you had to crank by hand. Volunteering to do coping for the teacher was quite a good way of getting out of lessons.

I can remember the registration number of a car my parents had in the 60's.

CarolsSecretCookieRecipe · 11/12/2018 23:51

'Weekend' chocolates.

brizzledrizzle · 11/12/2018 23:53

Same here. Threads was terrifying, my dcs school suggested they watch it but I couldn't bear to.

Would love this thread to go in Classics!

Luncheon vouchers!! I'd forgotten all about them! We used to get some every week in our wages.

I can remember having a taste of my mum's Chinese, she probably had one twice a year, and it was when we'd gone to bed. This was 70's, and we lived opposite a chippy run by a Chinese family, that was probably the first takeaway I remember in my house - but I was only allowed a tiny taste... how come I have to buy my kids takeaways of their own?? Hmm Grin

"And antimacassars" my mum still has these! The grandkids think it's hilarious!

"Oh, beds that sagged in the middle because of the number of people that had slept there prior....." Mum shared a bed with her 3 sisters until she was married! Me & sibs & sometimes cousins too slept in the same bed when we visited - it was utterly knackered!!

I think the max we had in there was 7, me & sibs, 2 of mum's sisters have kids around same age 2 each. I doubt we got very much sleep, although I remember waking with various arms & legs across me, usually a foot in the face! Then gran would bring us all hot rolls & irn bru in bed & shush us with a finger to her lips as we weren't supposed to have irn bru for breakfast!

Travesty that they've changed the recipe!

"I can remember the registration number of a car my parents had in the 60's." Wow! I thought I was doing well to remember all 3 car reg's from when I still lived at home (80's & 90's) and home phone numbers for 3 houses, 2 grans & 2 best friends (no 'contacts' apps then). I also for no reason at all remember customer account numbers from my first office job - completely useless info as the company is probably bust or else account numbers changed.
