What's your cut off point for a final baby? we have 1 DS whose 14 months. was born prem but seems ok! Took 18 months to conceive. I'm 32 and DH is 40. How long would you leave it if you wanted another child?

I’m 32 and hope to have another baby withinh the next 3 years. I’d say my cut off would be about 38/39. But my dad had my twin half sisters at 50!

FelixTitling · 20/12/2018 23:55

I had my first at 33 after 10 years of trying, second at 35 and my 3rd never happened.

Babies come when, and if, they want.

"didn't feel any more tired than I would have at 32; "

You don't know that.

I was 34 and DH 40 but we knew DD would be our final child. We have 3DC and I was only 23 when DS1 was born.

Winterberriesonatree · 21/12/2018 00:09

We had our kids in twenties and early thirties, then vowed no more.

Yet my GreatGM had a child when she was in her early fifties. My GF was born the youngest in a large family. We were incredulous learning about GGMs age at the birth of her last child, when researching the family tree, but there was no contraception in those days (early 1900s) and it was probably not that unusual.

I guess there was a high rate of death in childbirth and early childhood, but obviously some strong and healthy folk still survived. Otherwise quite a few in our family (including me and other siblings/cousins/children/neices) would not be here for Xmas in 2018.

MamaDane · 21/12/2018 00:10

Depends on how long ttc is going to take. We want kids but we don't know how long this journey will take.
Ideally the cut off should be before my 40th, so 39, but luckily we have many years to try.

Hotpinkangel19 · 21/12/2018 00:12

No older than 35.

Winterberriesonatree · 21/12/2018 00:14

MamaDane

Good luck!

I had a mental cut off of 35 for getting pregnant. Thought I was done when DC2 was born when I was 32 but had another when I was just 36 (so was indeed pregnant at 35). My DP is 13 years older, but I think it matters far less for men. Everyone thinks he's much younger than he is, anyway! Grin

pissedonatrain · 21/12/2018 00:27

It depends on what you and your DH want. I had my 2 by 27 and it was right for me. I couldn't imagine being in my 50s and 60s dealing with school runs or teenagers :)

Kokeshi123 · 21/12/2018 00:31

My cut-off was actually more influenced by a) the whole thing about being older with a teenager (would like to be able to get the kids out of the house before retirement!) and b) husband's sperm quality. The risk of things like autism, schizophrenia and ADHD appear to rise as fathers get older, and these are not risks that can be easily quantified or screened for.

The mitosis risk for mothers (growing risk of chromosomal abnormalities) was not something that worried me much as I have access to the NIPT and would terminate if there were a problem (sorry, just being blunt).

Kokeshi123 · 21/12/2018 00:33

Lots of people where I live don't even start having babies until late 30s early 40s and I find it a bit strange to see women who look like grannies collecting their kids from the local primary.

Oh do please be fucking off.

Penguin34 · 21/12/2018 00:33

I've just had my baby at 35 and my husband is 50.

If we'd have had this one earlier I would have had a second

explodingkitten · 21/12/2018 00:33

My gran was 46 when my mum was born. Soooo 46 ish?

Why would anyone look like a granny in their late 40s? You must know some people who have had very hard paper rounds!

MutedUser · 21/12/2018 01:40

My cut off is 35

stayathomer · 21/12/2018 07:06

Wellpersonally I think it's nice if the two are close in age but not so close that you've torn your hair out with a one year old when you have a new born but you're past that issue anyway! It's not really something you decide though is it? Personally I think any age biologically if you're fit-I'm 39 and I don't think my body would handle it well but that's because I've had four kids and everything's falling apart now! I understand what your dh means though, if he's 50 having a child then he's thinking of how he'll be an elderly parent when the child's an adult
