You know when you get invited to a Partylite/Younique/MLM Party...

Do you tell the friend who invited you the truth, which is you don't support MLM's and won't ever attend a party or buy anything from them...or just say you're busy that night?!

Never been invited to a party but SIL asked us to buy from her Arbonne shite for Xmas. We said we were totally not interested in the product. So not quite explicit about not supporting her because it's a MLM but not totally avoiding the issue.

QuilliamCakespeare · 06/12/2018 19:58

Yep, I told my friend exactly why I wasn't going. She hosted at her house on behalf of someone else, mostly for the freebies. She's canny like that!

TeaStory · 06/12/2018 20:01

I just say I can’t go. There’s no point trying to explain, they’ve been conditioned to see it as “negativity” and “being a hater”.

SatsumaFan · 06/12/2018 20:06

I've been invited to a CandleLite party by someone, she's just hosting it though rather than being a consultant or whatever they call themselves. I don't know her that well so think I'll just be a wimp and say I'm busy that night! Or that I adore the Jo Malone rip-off candles from Aldi so can't imagine spending any more than £9.99 on a massive candle.

Depends who it is. I have a friend who kept inviting me to Jamie at Home parties (she was hosting, not selling) and I said it wasn't my type of thing. I also know someone who keeps trying to arrange a Tropics party but that's easy to turn down as it's on Facebook so I just decline. I now have a Younique bot on my Facebook, have declined to join groups and so far haven't had a party invite but it's inevitable and she seems quite into the videos and is wearing a lot more makeup than usual and posting selfies, which she has never done before. I won't be going.

BitchQueen90 · 06/12/2018 20:26

I tell the truth. And I say the same thing to anyone who tries to add me to one of their Facebook groups. I've been unfriended by quite a few people. Grin

SatsumaFan · 06/12/2018 20:28

I keep being added to a Body Shop at Home FB page by a school-run Mum. Body Shop aren't MLM tho are they? Not that I buy anything from them anyway...

OP posts:
CheekySmile · 06/12/2018 20:37

Yes, Body shop at home is MLM

Spongebobette · 06/12/2018 20:51

Oh god steer clear

I will be relieved when MLMs become socially unacceptable; when being invited to a ‘party’ at someone’s house to listen to be flogged tat and listen to a recruitment pitch is akin to being invited to .... um...

Can’t think of anything so socially unacceptable.. that makes you exploit your relationships with friends and family..

Autumnsunrise · 06/12/2018 20:57

Not been invited for years but I usually go and don't buy anything. Winds them right up. And a few people usually join me in non purchasing Grin

acatcalledjohn · 06/12/2018 21:19

Just be honest. I've made it really quite clear to close friends why I absolutely refuse to be associated with it, and also highlight how shit the business model is.

Not to mention that it isn't a party if it involves product pushing and/or recruitment. A party is good company/food/alcohol, not some twat smearing shitty creams on your hands whilst cooing over how scientifically natural and backed up by independent heavily financed studies it is.

Fuck that shit. If people think that is a party then they deserve to be told how shit it really is.

DoveSecret · 06/12/2018 22:27

My ex colleague sells Nu Skin stuff. I have a nosey on her Instagram account and its all #entrepreneur #lipplumgloss blah blah. Photos of cocktails and bags. Fuckinghell selling lippy doesn’t give you that lifestyle.

But it certainly gives me a right laugh.

DoveSecret · 06/12/2018 22:29

But always refuse invites to Body Shop/younique. Its boring. Don’t interest me.

GhostSauce · 06/12/2018 22:31

I've never had a FB bot. I feel quite left out.

santababyconvertible · 06/12/2018 22:38

What about Tropic? I am suspicious of it but I'm assured by my SIL that it's "not a MLM!"

SatsumaFan · 06/12/2018 22:42

@santababyconvertible

Never heard of it, but a quick Google and click on their website and it says this...

"LOVE IT. SHARE IT. EARN FROM IT.
By sharing the products they love most, our Ambassadors are going from beauty lovers to business owners.

WHY JOIN THE FAMILY?"

Sounds like an MLM to me?!

There are a few, but here's an MLM master list: b mlmtruth.org/2018/02/08/the-mlm-master-list/

FishBulb · 06/12/2018 22:51

The sister of a friend asked if I'd like to come to a Partylite party. I blurted out "oh god, no, that sounds awful!" Never been bothered again! Grin

purpleme12 · 06/12/2018 22:59

It's interesting that it says Arbonne on there. Someone I know has started doing this but I'd never heard of it before and it doesn't sound like all the others. Also I think it's ridiculously expensive?
So I wasn't sure what the deal is with that one

Spanielmadness · 06/12/2018 23:09

They all are purpleme12 basically if it’s anyone selling stuff then it’s MLM these days.

Norma27 · 07/12/2018 04:39

Arbonne is definitely mlm. As is tropic.
I got invited via group messenger to a tropic party.
I said I will not attend any mlm parties as I do not agree with the way they operate. Quite a few people then decided not to go. I had a few say they wish they could be upfront and say no.

Waytooearly · 07/12/2018 06:10

I saw an interesting article comparing MLM s to cults, with the same effect of destroying your friendships and family relationships.

I remember the first time I was invited to one, in the 90s,a woman at my new job invited me to a 'Stamping Party' and I thought, 'How sweet of her, I guess it's a craft party!' Imagine the pearl-clutching horror when the catalogue got passed around!

hodgeheg92 · 07/12/2018 06:20

I have a friend who has just started one of these, keep turning down "party" invites because it makes me feel uncomfortable. I didn't realise there was a name for them and that I'm not alone in disliking them. Thanks for the thread! I feel much more comfortable in my quiet disdain now.

TamiTayorismyparentingguru · 07/12/2018 06:37

Anyone know anything about Temple Spa? It’s not on the master list but I have always considered it as an equal alongside all the other MLMs.

A friend of mine sells the stuff and I have always declined any invitations to her parties on the basis that I can’t think of anything worse than sitting around in someone’s living room with hot towels on my face while I soak my feet in a basin of water. I’ll also never spend ridiculous sums of money on creams and lotions no matter where they come from - my skin care routine is more a smear of Nivea if my face feels dry than anything else.
