'D'h brought some home for me. They're vile SadEnvy
The dairy milk are disgusting and the caramel bite tastes like petrol.

I stick with Aldi bars. I haven't tried any of their Christmas range. Does anyone know if they're palm oil free?

I'd love it if they sold an alternative to Roses etc. I believe they do but I was put off last year as the packaging looked a bit cheap and gaudy Grin

DaanSaaf · 05/12/2018 22:38

*vegetable fat!

That’s how they sneak it in there*

Bastards Angry

I hear you. I’m furious about what the Americans have done to OUR chocolate. I am stunned that there hasn’t been an organised protest about it, but am hopeful that now people are waking up to the horrors of palm oil people will put more pressure on Cadbury’s and other chocolate manufacturers to stop using it.

Rosalise · 05/12/2018 22:39

On their website they tell you the ingredients and they do contain palm oil:
"Ingredients
"Milk, sugar, glucose syrup, vegetable fats (palm, shea, sunflower), cocoa butter, cocoa mass, whey powder (from milk), glucose-fructose syrup, hazelnuts, emulsifiers (E442, soya lecithin, E471, sunflower lecithin, E476), rice flour, skimmed milk powder, reduced fat cocoa powder, salt, humectant (glycerol), flavourings, sodium hydrogen carbonate, molasses, citric acid, whey protein concentrate (from milk), colours (anthocyanins, paprika extract).
"May contain other nuts."

Wallabyone · 05/12/2018 22:43

Marks and Spencer's chocolate is good, I'm just working my way through a bag of coins meant for my children!

Also, Hotel Chocolat is nice, Godiva, and Ritter.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 05/12/2018 22:43

Galaxy chocolate tastes the same luckily

MacarenaFerreiro · 05/12/2018 22:43

Palm oil .

Fatted · 05/12/2018 22:47

This is the problem with trying to keep chocolate cheap. They put any old shite in it to keep the costs down.

I think it's the taste consistency of the Caramel that's changed the most. Can't put my finger on what or why. Thankfully Boost and Twirl seem to be safe, albeit smaller.

SunnySomer · 05/12/2018 22:49

Agree that M&S chocolate is nice. Also Godiva or Neuhaus (though not at all cheap). M&S also sell bars of Italian dark chocolate with whole hazelnuts in which is gorgeous. I like the little individual gianduja you get in Caffè Nero- think you can get boxes of these in carluccio (or did they go bust?)

GlasgowWorrier · 05/12/2018 22:52

Mackie's milk chocolate is almost like old style Thorntons - it's a Scottish brand but weirdly currently available for a bargain 99p in the food aisle of randomness in Lidl.

I may have stocked up.

MarthasGinYard · 05/12/2018 22:57

Kraft should stick to spready cheese

Quality street now just 'street'

Also vile

Chardeemacdennis1 · 05/12/2018 22:57

Thortons are the worst now. They make me feel sick. Can't say I can notice the difference with the Cadbury I eat, mainly crunchy and buttons. Not tried the roses in ages.

The aldi dessert chocolate collection is really nice.

GlasgowWorrier · 05/12/2018 23:00

Thorntons continental flavours now all taste the same, like a box of chocolate-shaped soaps. I nearly bought a half price advent calendar in Tesco yesterday, then thought, WTF are you doing? A daily chocolate disappointment for nearly a whole month is no way to celebrate the magic of Christmas.

HildaZelda · 05/12/2018 23:42

Aldi's own brand chocolate is one of the few that doesn't have palm oil.
If you want to splash out, Leonidas is pricey but tasty.

Davros · 05/12/2018 23:54

Does Iceland have an own brand chocolate?

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 05/12/2018 23:58

Thanks Hilda!

spiderplantsalad · 06/12/2018 05:44

Was also coming to recommend teh Aldi own brand chocolate - it still tastes like proper chocolate and doesn't have palm oil. Even the fairly cheap one doesn't.

MacarenaFerreiro · 06/12/2018 07:24

Aldi Moser Roth is lovely. As is the milk Lindt. Not sure if there's a assorted box like Roses/Quality Street which isn't packed with cheap crap or whatever.

catsmother · 06/12/2018 07:45

Divine is good albeit not widely available and somewhat more expensive than the sort of chocolate you buy for a quick snack. Larger Co-ops usually have it, sometimes in Sainsburys or Waitrose too, and also in Oxfam shops.

Totally agree about Cadburys though - and it's been that way for several years now. If you can find an Irish section in your supermarket, you might find the bars there taste 'like they used to', or, at least they did the last time I bought some. Giant chocolate buttons and Flakes also taste more like the old recipe but I'm loathe to contribute to their profits too often to be honest because I feel so pissed off at how Kraft just swept in and totally ruined a popular product, and without being honest about it. It's not just the flavour but the texture as well - vile, oily and nauseating. It's somehow utterly tasteless yet revolting at the same time, like I've just eaten a spoonful of Vaseline or similar. I can't believe that taste testers would have given positive feedback about it but maybe they just thought fuck it and sent it out anyway. Trouble is, it's still a well known brand and younger kids and teens who don't have anything to compare it to lap it up … and many of the sickly, gimmicky recipes in Dairy Milk bars like Oreo, Exploding Candy etc really appeal to that demographic.

SandyDrawsBadly · 06/12/2018 07:46

They’re terrible now. They all taste the same. I used to beg for roses but now it’s quality street all the way.

catsmother · 06/12/2018 07:50

And yeah, to be fair, it's not just Cadburys though the change is particularly pronounced with them because Dairy Milk was such an institution. Galaxy, Quality Street, Terrys Chocolate Orange, Maltesers, … so many brands selling out and becoming repulsive and pointless. I'm a complete chocoholic - more than is good for me - and used to find it hard to resist buying chocolate when out and about. But even I now have absolutely no appetite for most of the standard high street chocolate at all. It makes me feel sick just thinking about it Angry

NancyDonahue · 06/12/2018 07:56

We don't buy them anymore. I think people still buy them because they are nostalgic each year and forget by the next year that they are indeed, shit.

M&S do a version of their own which are much better.

And yes to the Aldi chocolate Smile

greendale17 · 06/12/2018 08:12

M&S and Montezuma is nice.

bananamonkey · 06/12/2018 08:24

Chocolate oranges are also totally ruined for me now Angry All “normal” chocolate tastes waxy and odd now. Aldi all the way...

DaanSaaf · 06/12/2018 10:51

Quality street now just 'street'

What??
