What food will be affected by brexit?

I don’t want to start giving in to panic buying but I feel it will be sensible to stock up on some extra food etc just in case.
So what food should I be getting? What will be most affected?

What do you think?

Sausagefingers9 · 05/12/2018 17:26

I’m not sure, that’s why I’m asking!

Hmm
Rabbitjam · 05/12/2018 17:30

I'm stocking up just to avoid the supermarket in case people panic buy in the week after (if) we leave. I'm getting rice, pasta, tinned veg, chickpeas, baked beans, lentils, tinned tomatoes, pesto, olives, stock cubes, noodles, oats, bread flour, yeast, UHT milk, tea, cat food, rabbit food, nappies, loo roll, small box washing powder, calpol, piriton, tooth paste, and treats like chocolate /biscuits etc. I've just been getting it bit by bit and adding it to the brexit box. If we don't need it I'll donate it to a food bank.

KnittingSister · 05/12/2018 17:33

All of it will be affected, because whatever is imported will be affected, then whatever we could use instead of the imported stuff will suffer from the knock on effect . We're all doomed Sad

TheQueef · 05/12/2018 17:37

Corned beef obviously.

Neolara · 05/12/2018 17:41

What knittingsister said.

enoughisenough2 · 05/12/2018 17:43

Just think third world. Yes exactly

Sausagefingers9 · 05/12/2018 17:43

Argh don’t say that knitting! I’ve been digging my head in the sand but figured I’ll regret that when it kicks off so am trying to be practical now.

So basically stock up on all essentials then?

OP posts:
TroyKing · 05/12/2018 17:49

You don't need to stockpile anything.

milkysmum · 05/12/2018 17:50

People stock piling is what will cause more problems!

Calzone · 05/12/2018 17:51

Don’t be ridiculous.

KnittingSister · 05/12/2018 17:53

Well I don't think stockpiling now will make much difference to future shortages, that'll be when people start stockpiling after brexit when we'll have shortages Grin

BasinHaircut · 05/12/2018 17:54

Do you think that retailers/wholesalers/distribution networks/manufacturers have all neglected to Brexit plan?

I work in non-food but essential commodity supply chain and I can tell you that Brexit is all anyone has been thinking about and planning for for a long time.

There will undoubtedly be an effect, but you may not even notice it as a consumer.

Rabbitjam · 05/12/2018 17:54

Stock piling will hardly cause problems if you do it well in advance or bit by bit. Frantic panic buying in March /April is what will cause problems.

WingingWonder · 05/12/2018 17:55

The main issue will be medicines, but supply chains are on version 1725384 of their plan. Which is arguably more than our gov...

happyclutterchucker · 05/12/2018 17:58

I'm not sure there will be too much in the way of shortages, but rather a steep hike in prices.

We import millions of tonnes of food and all sorts of other stuff from abroad, those producers are still going to want to sell it to us. But we might have to pay a lot more for it in terms of duty etc.

Sausagefingers9 · 05/12/2018 17:59

I’m not going to go crazy with it, I just want a back up for the first few weeks.

What long lasting protein could I buy? I like tinned mackerel but can’t think of much else that is nice v

There are other nuts in the world !
Frogs legs - no, not you - they may be in short supply, not shorts.
Pate de fois gras a must have at Christmas - all that force feeding.
Sex manuals - the French think they own the rights to genitals
Petrol - its all ablaze over there
So many things from so many country'sin short supply - we might have to eat our own, make and call our sparkling wine Champagne - dispense with Somerset in front of 'Brie'
I have nothing else in my life except the loss of the 'vulgar' market.

rainbowquack · 05/12/2018 18:04

There is a difference between prepping and buying a few extra things at a stead rate and panic buying.

I am of the opinion that buying a few extra things each shop to stock up on isn't crazy, it's actually good practice. It is inevitable that prices will go up, but whether that will be from March or at a later date, is anyone's guess.

IAmNotLikeThat · 05/12/2018 18:08

Salad out of season will be hard to find at any price. Otherwise UK vegetables and salad will increase on average by about 130% by 2019/20. I invest in that industry - financing agriculture and retail food products. We should start to grow more at home. That is not a panic thing, more just good sense. There is a massive amount we can do here.

ginghambox · 05/12/2018 18:16

There will not be any food, the plague of locusts are due to arrive at 1 minute past 12 on the 30th of March.

Rabbitjam · 05/12/2018 18:21

Op you may be taken more seriously over on the preppers board. This thread is full of "helpful" comments already

BurpAndRustle · 05/12/2018 18:28

Olive oil
Wine

StupidBrexit · 05/12/2018 18:31

Don't listen to the hard of thinking. You're doing the right thing.

Don't forget toilet roll, medicines, sanpro and toiletries.

There will undoubtedly be some disruption, it's just a question of how much and if you can avoid the shops whilst all the knuckle draggers fight it out, you'll be much safer.
