What food will be affected by brexit?

I don’t want to start giving in to panic buying but I feel it will be sensible to stock up on some extra food etc just in case.
So what food should I be getting? What will be most affected?

What long lasting protein could I buy

Dried or canned beans, lentils and chick peas.

Puddelchen · 05/12/2018 18:44

Do we still need to stockpile? I thought a hard brexit was unlikely now?

nancy75 · 05/12/2018 18:47

Isn’t most meat from here anyway? I guess we might have to eat British fruit & veg, stock up on French wine to be on the safe side!

Antigonads · 05/12/2018 19:18

Which way did you vote OP?

Fluffyears · 05/12/2018 19:46

Tinned meats, i’mbuying extra tins but will freeze a couple of loafs as during the snow there was no bread or milk.

Sausagefingers9 · 05/12/2018 19:47

Thanks everyone, made a list of things I will stock up on over the coming months.

I voted remain, why?

What will be affected will be the price of food. So buying tinned food or dried food that you will use anyway may save money.

You could do us a favour and shoot that McDonalds reindeer.
They taste good by the way!

borntobequiet · 05/12/2018 20:08

All food. It will look like this.

I thought a hard brexit was unlikely now?

The only thing that is soft is the stools of 650 politicians in Westminster.

To think the EU politicians were going to be like putty in our hands is both foolish and arrogant.

Collectively we are back where we belong at the moment.

BasinHaircut · 05/12/2018 21:46

Hard of thinking? stupidbrexit?

I hardly think a cupboard full of mackerel, loo roll and tampons is going to have any meaningful impact on the effects of brexit on anyone.

Any mitigations, contingencies and stockpiles need to be put in place by industry, not Beryl at number 57.

KeepServingTheDrinks · 05/12/2018 23:07

After Brexit, all food will taste of British.

Armi · 05/12/2018 23:17

I have this tremendous and growing urge to go knocking on doors (I live in the bigoted hole of stupidity that is Lincolnshire, where we now can’t harvest crops because the residents voted for Brexit but think agricultural work is beneath them) demanding to know if, when voting for Brexit, these fucking idiots had in mind that we would be talking of stockpiling basic goods and medicines. I still cannot process the utter, utter stupidity of a huge swathe of the population who voted Leave. Twats.

TroyKing · 05/12/2018 23:35

Actually I might just buy up all the boxes of tissues so that the Remoaners have nothing to dry their tears with. Diddums.

Armi · 05/12/2018 23:44

Which is precisely the sort of stupid comment one would expect from a Brexit-voting moron.

Antigonads · 06/12/2018 10:51

Unlike the uber intelligent OP who has had to take to MN to ask about what she should stockpile.

bellinisurge · 06/12/2018 11:22

I'm an actual prepper. Don't waste money stocking up on stuff nobody eats. They will just be more pissed off.
If you want to put some extra by, just imagine being snowed in for three days. Think of what your household (including pets) would eat for breakfast dinner and tea. You don't need to go for "shelf stable" stuff if you don't predict power cuts. Use your freezer. That is up to you.
Make sure you have toothpaste and soap in, as well as loo roll and sanpro.
Make sure you have some treats in to cheer people up.
It is a good idea to have a 3 day buffer anyway if you can manage it. I suspect most people actually already have with a few bits missing that they buy as they think of it. Just fill in any gaps so you have a clear buffer.
The prepper topic has loads of ideas. It's not a religion or a cult. You don't have to become a prepper.
To be frank, the fewer people whining about not being able to get stuff the better. And if you don't need it, give it to a food bank.

RiskIt4Biscuit · 06/12/2018 12:42

I suspect everything will be affected, even British products.

The pound will likely drop (bad deal, no deal, government collapsing and whatever else could happen), causing prices to go up.
Fuel prices will go up, which will result in prices of goods (including ingredients and parts) having to go up.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 06/12/2018 12:47

OP, my partner who told me repeatedly I was being a drama llama about Brexit and to stop being ridiculous has started a massive stockpile following this list:

cookingonabootstrap.com/2018/11/15/stockpiling-for-brexit/

He has also obtained a crossbow just in case

rainbowquack · 06/12/2018 20:41

A crossbow? What for?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 06/12/2018 21:24

Shooting squirrels?
Defending the stash?
🤷

meddie · 06/12/2018 21:30

I am hoping it wont be an issue, but its not even that there might be food shortages people only have to panic about there being food shortages and the shelfs will get emptied. So I am stockpiling some basics so I dont have to deal with the shops in the first few weeks.
