I’ve never seen the queens speech, anyone else?

Mid thirties and it’s passed me by. My family wouldn’t watch it so I never have.

OP posts:
Heatherjayne1972 · 04/12/2018 21:59

Nope. Never seen it. Don’t intend to watch either

MrSlant · 04/12/2018 22:01

Christmas used to be scheduled around it so my dear dear GP's could watch, I'm not sure we stood for the whole thing but I have an embarrassing thought that we stood for the national anthem at the end (is that a thing, it's been a while now?). DGF served in the second world war and it meant a lot to both grandparents.

Feel a bit sad now that I haven't seen it in ages. Ah poor DC's they don't know what they are in for this year Grin

Kintan · 04/12/2018 22:01

I’ve never watched either. My parents were not interested in the royal family and passed that disinterest on to me - and I fully intend to pass it on to my DC!

MiddlingMum · 04/12/2018 22:02

Not seen it since the 70s. DH's family apparently used to stand solemnly in front of the tv to watch it. They were slightly appalled when they discovered I was a republican and would rather be doing the washing up.

DaphneFanshaw · 04/12/2018 22:06

Nope, I think I may have caught the end of it once or twice whilst waiting for the snowman or such like to come on, other than that - a big fat no.

goingonabearhunt1 · 04/12/2018 22:07

All anti royalists here so no.

Kescilly · 04/12/2018 22:07

I’ve only lived here a couple years and I’ve seen it! The in-laws always watch it so I go along with it. I didn’t understand the fuss though, it seems like the contents are reported in the newspapers before she even delivers her message.

PuppyMonkey · 04/12/2018 22:07

I thought you meant the film at first OP and then I remembered it’s The King’s Speech. Grin

I make a point of not watching the Queen on Christmas Day as I can’t stand the royal family and find them all thick as shit over-privileged twats.

Valkarie · 04/12/2018 22:08

Made it all the way to early 30's. Then the first time I hosted Christmas, my brother sneakily put it on while I was cooking the lunch. Traitor! We eat Christmas lunch excessively late by the way.

Moominfan · 04/12/2018 22:08

Nope. Growing up my family weren't fans of the royals. When Diana died and my cartoons weren't on my dad told me a privileged white woman had died. My mum thinks they should all get proper jobs

cheeseandcrackers · 04/12/2018 22:10

Never seen it. Better things to do in the middle of the afternoon on Christmas day than turn on the tv

landmarkfuture · 04/12/2018 22:18

Mid-thirties, anti royalist, and never seen it. Fully intend to never see it. She's no queen of mine.
(I obviously understand I am one of her "subjects", but I didn't choose that, and I sure as hell don't think her family were chosen by God to rule us all.)

TwiceMagic · 04/12/2018 22:21

In nearly 40 and I’ve never seen it. I never plan to either. 😁

AornisHades · 04/12/2018 22:24

Coming up on 50 and never seen it. See no reason to change that.

SumitosIsMyWall · 04/12/2018 22:26

Nope. Maybe this is the root of my anti-Christmas sentiment. I'm ruined because I've never watched a woman born into privilege telling the world her opinion...which is not live because she has better things to do on Christmas day. I'll happily make it to my death bed without watching it too.

ShatnersBassoon · 04/12/2018 22:28

I've never seen it, but I don't actively avoid it and I quite like the Queen. I think I've either been busy with new stuff (0-16), or tipsy legs akimbo asleep on the sofa (17+).

I'm in my early mid thirties too and I've never seen it either.

The Kings' Speech and The Human Centipede is a cracker of a film though.

BalloonSlayer · 05/12/2018 06:43

we stood for the national anthem at the end (is that a thing, it's been a while now?)

Yes that was definitely a thing. It still has a hangover today . . . have you ever wondered why, at the cinema, the second the closing credits start, everyone stampedes out of the auditorium? That's because they always used to to play the national anthem at the end of films at the cinema and if you were still in the theatre when it started you had to stand to attention while it played. And film credit sequences were much shorter then. So everyone would bolt for the doors the second the film stopped. I always like the credits so I was mystified by this, till my mum told me. It is finally starting to change a bit now, what with Marvel films always having something in the credits and so on.

Afonavon · 05/12/2018 06:50

Never seen it, and never will. Our family was never a fan of the Royals and what they stand for. No place on Christmas day (or any other) for listening to what the queen has been told to say.

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 05/12/2018 06:53

I always watch the Queens speech if I’m home - why wouldn’t you? She’s reading the governments message about their plans for the year. I like to see if there is any flicker of disapproval!

Christmas message - we sometimes watch it but aren’t tied to it.

Greensleeves · 05/12/2018 22:02

Yes, why wouldn't you? Why wouldn't you waste your Christmas afternoon listening to the warblings of an inbred parasitical dimwit who has no idea what she is saying?

I wouldn't give any of them the steam off my piss.

RitaFairclough · 05/12/2018 22:12

I’m also 45 and i’ve also never seen it. I’m not really sure what it is! Is it like the royal equivalent of a round robin?

“What a year it’s been chez Windsor! You wait ages for a wedding and then two come along at once...”

CryingMessFFS · 05/12/2018 22:14

I didn’t even know the Queen’s speech was a thing until a few years ago Blush I am 30. Not a fan of the royal family though, anyway

SheHasNotions · 05/12/2018 22:21

No. It wasn’t a thing when I was a kid (Irish family). I remember watching clips of the ‘annus horribilis’ one after Diana died, though.
