Car advice! Mileage vs age?

29 replies

itsbetterthanabox · 04/12/2018 17:31

Looking at very equivalent vehicles.
One Kia 2014 with 20,000
One Hyundai 2016 with 50,000
Both have a couple of years warranty left.
Which do we choose and why?!

The average mileage is said to be around 10000 a year so the Hyundai is way over that. Generally parts etc will need to be changed based on mileage rather than age. I'd go for the Kia based on that, but then I haven't looked at any reviews for the cars themselves. It could be that the Kia is notorious for breakdowns or having an expensive part needing to be replaced early/often

akkakk · 04/12/2018 17:42

never that simplistic - as above, that is high mileage, but that probably means lots of motorway driving, and could mean someone who was very good at replacing tyres / maintaining the car / etc. - that could be better than a 4 year old car doing 5,000 miles a year driven by a pensioner everywhere in first gear with the clutch halfway down and revving the engine Grin

always buy on condition - then on support / service from the seller

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 04/12/2018 17:42

I’d go for the Kia the Hyundai has really really high mileage for its age. Kia are good and reliable which is one of the reason they give such a long manufacturer warranty when others give half what they do.
The higher mileage one has been worked hard and parts need replaced by mileage. Even if I didn’t but the Kia I wouldn’t touch the Hyundai.

KnittingSister · 04/12/2018 17:43

Or a car with fewer miles may have done lots of short journeys from cold starts. This means that the engine never warms up properly. Common with retired folk/people who don't go out much etc.

Justaboy · 04/12/2018 17:45

Diesel or Petrol is the first question i'd be asking!.

Redhound · 04/12/2018 17:45

Have a look on www.honestjohn.co.uk - reviews of cars with common faults etc

itsbetterthanabox · 04/12/2018 17:47

@Justaboy both petrol

Do they both have full service history? Private or trade sale?

itsbetterthanabox · 04/12/2018 18:04

@Redhound
Both have full service history and both from dealers.

Justaboy · 04/12/2018 18:04

itsbetterthanabox well in that case then check the service record and condition of them and price and decide what you feel suit you better.

Just wondered as my old Diseasel has done some 250,000 miles and is still running fine:)

BeachtheButler · 04/12/2018 18:11

I'd have the one with the lower mileage. 50,000 in just over a year is a hell of a lot. If it's been properly and professionally maintained, it may be OK but personally, I wouldn't chance it.

HJWT · 04/12/2018 19:32

What is the engine size 1.7?

HJWT · 04/12/2018 19:32

A lot of people don't think about engine size but. 1.2 pulling a suv isn't going to last as long as a 2.0 L engine

Disfordarkchocolate · 04/12/2018 19:38

How many miles do you do each year? We had a Hyundai and it was very reliable and efficient.

Redhound · 04/12/2018 19:38

I much prefer diesel engines, they last much longer than petrol for one thing.

itsbetterthanabox · 04/12/2018 19:39

@HJWT
1.2 or 1.25

OP posts:
itsbetterthanabox · 04/12/2018 19:40

@Disfordarkchocolate
We do around 14,000 ourselves

snowflakealert · 04/12/2018 19:42

Older car with low mileage (and a full service history) has always been my preference.

LEMtheoriginal · 04/12/2018 19:45

We were set to buy an 8 yo van for 5k. It had over 100k on the clock.

On the morning we were goimg to collect it i saw a 05 van on ebay for 1.5k with 80, 000 miles on it. Price £850

No brainer!

HJWT · 04/12/2018 20:36

My DH said he would go for a Hyundai and he knows a lot about cars but he also said that he's seen a lot of newer shape Kia's and Hyundai's going for spares or repairs as they have certain problems. But hard to give advice without full car details, he said previous owners is a big giveaway over 2/3 isn't a good sign

DramaAlpaca · 04/12/2018 20:40

I always go for an older car with low mileage so I'd get the Kia.

itsbetterthanabox · 04/12/2018 20:51

@HJWT
Both had only one owner that bought from new.
We aren't sure what to look at instead. We are very enticed by the long warranties on those 2 brands.

HJWT · 04/12/2018 21:12

The Kia sounds better then is it a smaller car or a Sportage size ? My DM had a Ford C-Max brand new with a 1.6 engine, the clutch went within 20 months and it was never the same after they 'fixed' it.

DoctorTwo · 04/12/2018 21:49

If the Hyundai's an i40 with a manual gearbox watch out, the clutch is a known problem.

itsbetterthanabox · 04/12/2018 21:53

@DoctorTwo
I20
Should have said. It's an I20 or a Rio.
We want a smaller car but not a tiny city one as we do long distance too.
