Mouse in my studio apartment AirBnB. It’s 5am here. Will mouse attack me in the night

Saw a mouse in my AirBnB about half an hour ago. It is a small studio apartment (so no separate bedroom) and I’m here for the week. It emerged from between the cushions of the sofa then was as surprised to see me as I it, and darted back in. A little while later it emerged from round the back of the sofa, again I startled and it darted back. I never knew why people got so jumpy around mice till now!

I’m just wondering... as it’s a studio flat and I can’t lock myself away to go to sleep, well, am I basically safe from a mouse attack in the night?! I mean, do they crawl onto your face or anything?!! I have not had to deal with mice before so don’t know! I haven’t heard it moving since then. I thought it might have a hole, but maybe it lives in the sofa!

I am in North America and it looked just like your normal mouse, except its ears were a little larger and rounder than I’d have expected. (This makes it sound like Mickey!!) It was grey, and maybe gerbil-sized, but definitely mouse-shaped. Its body and head together were maybe 6 inches long, plus it had a longish tail.

If you can, put out a bucket full of water, or fill the sinks/baths etc.

Mice are usually always on the hunt for water, and they can't swim, so you can drown it without a trap etc. Might not work but has worked for me in the past!

I'd be very surprised if it ran over you unless you have food around you!

HirplesWithHaggis · 03/12/2018 13:39

You are safe from attack. It's more scared of you etc. But do call the owner, you shouldn't have to share your space with uninvited rodents.

HollowTalk · 03/12/2018 13:40

I think the owner will deny this till they're blue in the face, so I would get it on video. Tell the owner asap and if they don't do something about it immediately, ask for a refund.

MrsJayy · 03/12/2018 13:40

No it won't attack you in your sleep i hate mice too the thought makes me shudder maybe mention to the owner of the flat they might trap it for you,

SpoonBlender · 03/12/2018 13:40

Mice don't attack. If you catch it in your hands one might bite you to get away, but that's all.

skiouch · 03/12/2018 13:51

Oh thank goodness. I messaged the owner and oddly enough he is up too due to jet lag. He said he will come up later today. He said he has never had a mouse problem before but was apologetic. I am half tempted to put some cereal out to tempt it out and get it on camera! I might try the water thing but think finding a dead mouse would be even more traumatic than finding a live one. Possibly I need to toughen up!

I am dead hard but wild mice give me the heebie geebies yes it is totally irrational but urgh. I hope you get rid of your guest soon

Wauden · 03/12/2018 13:57

A mouse will not attack a human! They prefer to keep away. If it is killed I hope that its done humanely.

Bluerussian · 03/12/2018 13:58

Just make sure there is no food lying about, uncovered.
The mouse will be more scared of you than you of it!

It won't hurt you - don't try to drown the poor thing, they take ages to drown, it's inhumane.

Orlande · 03/12/2018 13:58

It won't attack you it will just piss on your cornflakes.

Shoxfordian · 03/12/2018 14:00

It'll definitely kill you

RIP OP

I was once horrified to see mice can climb stairs and on to beds too!

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 03/12/2018 14:10

I was going to say don't be silly, but then I read your description of the larger, rounder ears.

The ones with large ears are the carnivorous ones. When they smell prey, they call out to others and form a swarm to strip the flesh from its bones.

My heart actually paused for a second before I reread that.

I’m kind of avoiding going to sleep now. I wonder if mice sleep during the day, does anybody know? Perhaps I will wait till sunrise.

Oh wait, and I have open blisters on each ankle from trying to ski Shock #vampiremouse

The head and body were 6 inches long? Is that not very big for a mouse?

ShalomJackie · 03/12/2018 14:37

He's not a rat he's a hamster (said in my Manuel from Fawlty Towers voice).

He will crawl over you in your sleep and take selfies on a little mouse phone.

Peanut butter is good for attracting mice.

RangeRider · 03/12/2018 14:38

Rubbish Snorting at that!

MrsJayy · 03/12/2018 14:41

Och little mouse selfie 😂

LittleMissNaice · 03/12/2018 14:42

Rubbish that was cruel and hilarious

ContessaHallelujahSparklehorse · 03/12/2018 14:43

He'll be back with his mouse buddies, OP. They move in little gangs with tiny tiny flick-knives, you know.

Grin I think you'll be fine!

shecamefromgreece · 03/12/2018 14:44

Sorry but six inches long and bigger ears?
That's a rat not a mouse.

Yes I thought it was on the larger side. It also was more shapely than an English mouse, with its head a distinct shape from its body rather than all blending into one, and it had a coat in good condition. That all sounds really weird doesn’t it. But it had nice glossy short fur. It is North America - I really have no idea what it could be. It definitely wasn’t rat-like. It kind of resembled something in the bush baby family, but a mouse version? I mean it was obviously a mouse but with that kind of slightly bush baby shape of its head and ears.

skiouch · 03/12/2018 14:48

Oh I’m proper scared to go to sleep now there is a question over what it is! I mean I know it doesn’t have a flick knife or a selfie stick, but what if it actually is some sort of piranha equivalent?!

PragmaticWench · 03/12/2018 14:49

Six centimetres would be a mouse, six inches and you're talking about a rat, surely?!
