How do you pronounce the numerical part of your address?

Just curious is there's a rhyme or reason to it.

I live at number 16. I say sixteen xxx avenue. My friend lives at 43 and says four three xxx road.

My mother lives at 157 and says 'one hundred and five seven' my dad says 'one- fifty seven'

I would say 'one - five- seven'

Just musing really

As others have said, I always say two-digit numbers as you would usually say the number, so 'forty three' but 3-digit numbers saying each digit, so 'one, five, seven'. I think your friend and your mum's ways of saying the numbers sound very strange! Sorry!

NooNooHead · 02/12/2018 22:46

My grandma used to say ‘one-four-seven’ which always made me think it was a bit funny. But then I did use to think it was the norm for a triple digit number as I only lived at a single digit one. Now I just say ‘number eleven’.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 02/12/2018 22:48

One one five for 115

DonaldDucksTowel · 02/12/2018 22:49

I username to live at number 111 and never knew how to say that, saying one one one sounded weird but if I said one eleven on the phone I’d always get ‘number eleven?’ And I’d have to clarify the extra one

Now I’m a single digit number I always say ‘number 5’ instead of just 5 - just the one number doesn’t feel long enough

It was all much easier when I lived at number 25 Grin

paxillin · 02/12/2018 22:51

Single digits over the phone, 16 as in your case may easily be copied as 60.

DraculaAD1972 · 02/12/2018 22:55

We're number 1. Not a lot you can do with that

JockTamsonsBairns · 02/12/2018 23:16

It's easy for us now that we live at number 10, so we just say "ten". Like other pp's though, when we lived at 257, I would always say two five seven - not sure why, it seems strangely odd to say two hundred and fifty seven!

Beat this though - our last house was just a house name, no number and no street name!! So, just (say) Orchard Cottage, Villagename, Sussex. It was a nightmare, especially with online shopping - lots of websites wouldn't accept the address, as it thought it hasn't been filled in correctly. We just used to put "1 High Street" or something, and hope the postie would figure it out.

MummyofTw0 · 02/12/2018 23:31

I say twenty five (25)

TheWiseWomansFear · 03/12/2018 00:24

Two-five-seven (257)

cakesonatrain · 03/12/2018 07:07

I think people say "1-4-5" because it's quicker and less opportunity for mishearing.

TheGhostOfYou · 03/12/2018 07:09

If just one-two digits I just say the number like 57 for example would be fifty-seven, but anything three digits and up I say the individual numbers, like 169 for example would be one-six-nine.

SocksRock · 03/12/2018 07:12

Current house only has a name. So I say the name, and then a variant on "no sorry no number, yes it's clearly labelled, on the main road, opposite the bus stop. Well I'm sorry if it's harder, but we genuinely do not have a house number"

That's if I'm talking to delivery men...

brizzledrizzle · 03/12/2018 07:22

24a for apple.

or 'Dunroamin' if I'm in the mood for it.

museumum · 03/12/2018 07:25

I say twenty four but if I lived at 124 I’d say one two four.

diamondofdoom · 03/12/2018 07:59

I say eleven (11) xxxx road, my partner says one one xxxx road

fartfacemcfartfaceface · 03/12/2018 09:01

I just say fifty four. I used to live at 110 and I said a hundred and ten. 🤷🏻‍♀️

fartfacemcfartfaceface · 03/12/2018 09:02

I have never in all my live long days heard anyone say they live at five four mumsnet road. That's really odd. It's a number just say the number.

brookshelley · 03/12/2018 09:11

I live at 444 and I say "four four four" Never thought to say four hundred forty-four.
