Do you judge people who have dirt under their fingernails?

I do - I really dislike it whether it's a man or a woman. Even if it's only a tiny bit!

Not really. My husband is a mechanic too, and I have horses, so we both have dirty nails sometimes. I have to really scrub them for work!

I'm a bit yuk about people with long, pointy bits of plastic or gel on their fingers personally. I had them when I got married and I can tell you they hide a huge amount of dirt behind them!

ElektraLOL · 28/11/2018 19:29

I wouldn't judge if they had a job like farmer or mechanic but otherwise I would!

So how do you decide who to judge? Do you quiz people about their lives first, or judge first and ask questions later? I have a grubby hobby, so despite washing regularly, I do have dirty fingernails at times. Is that acceptable, or would I be judged? not that I actually give a shit

Greensleeves · 28/11/2018 19:38

No. Especially not since I've had a child with ASD whose nails grow at a supernatural rate and who detests being told to clean or cut them - I do try, but it's not always the hill I want to die on, and I don't think much of people who are shallow enough to sneer at us because of something so trivial.

Helmetbymidnight · 28/11/2018 20:08

Im still not sure what you’re judging them to be?

Caprisunorange · 28/11/2018 20:08

Diiirrrtttyyyyy

DinosApple · 28/11/2018 20:16

Nope. I work in a garage, not as a mechanic, and my hands get dirty pretty fast in the day.

Where there's engines there's dirt!... In the office, inside the printer, the card machine, the keyboard, the phone etc. Within a day there's a film over everything.

I also do a hobby that involves a lot of mud too... Grin

Tink1990 · 28/11/2018 20:28

If not part of their work I deffo would. Im not judgy on anything else really but dirt under nails? Makes me feel icky

Chocolatebourbons · 28/11/2018 20:31

Yes, especially if it's a Beauty Therapist about to do a facial. True story.

Green sleeves - I'm not sneering at anyone. Actually I have ASD and so do two of my daughters. One of them scratches surfaces as a stim and she doesn't like me to cut her nails or clean them but I force her because dirty nails is a pet hate of mine. I suppose I'm a mean mummy!

Mine are grotty this evening because I spent the afternoon digging around planting and weeding in the garden. Nothing worse than what you'd find on a fresh potato. Wink

What I used to find grim was when I worked in hospital clinics and people's paperwork and bus passes had greasy nicotine stains from being regularly handled on the same spot.

BlackBeltInChildWrangling · 28/11/2018 22:45

I don't think you're sneering, Elektra. That sounds tough. Flowers Remember though that not everyone can or wants to force their DC, especially with severe Autism, if it could lead to a meltdown or if their DC is as big or bigger than them. A friend has a similar issue with haircuts with her severely Autistic now teen DC.

RebelWitchFace · 28/11/2018 22:50

No. Because mine are always filthy for some reason. I'll be out of the bath all nice and clean and 3 hours later there will be dirt under them even if I'm just sitting watching telly. Not to mention if I actually do anything remotely handsy. It's a pain in the ass really.

Greensleeves · 28/11/2018 22:51

You can say you're not sneering, but you've actually started a thread saying that you judge people for it!

That's fine that you force your dd because it's one of your personal hang-ups. I can't force my 6 foot DS, and I wouldn't anyway, because frankly what with the self-harming, suicidal tendencies and school refusal I feel he has enough to contend with at the moment. I have ASD too and the sight of his grotty nails/matted hair/stubble doesn't fill me with maternal pride either - but I'm not going to make my DS miserable and cause a meltdown just because clean nails might make me - or YOU, if you happen to see us and judge - feel better!

Delatron · 28/11/2018 22:53

I don’t look at people’s nails!

TheFallenMadonna · 28/11/2018 22:55

When you say "judge", what do you mean?

Skatersbeskating · 28/11/2018 22:58

You could offer free nail files & ask them to do a quick buff.

StylishMummy · 28/11/2018 22:59

Yes it's rank

Also judge people who spit in public and don't cover their mouths when they cough. All on a similar footing IMHO

Mumshappy · 28/11/2018 23:04

Cant stand it when children have long dirty nails

Skatersbeskating · 28/11/2018 23:07

Cracked heels bother me & if they are ingrained with dirt, then I probably stare at their feet a bit too long.

No excuse really for dodgy trotters.

RaspberryRipple1963 · 28/11/2018 23:14

Depends. If they do gardening for a living,or a similarly 'grubby' job,I might be more inclined to overlook it. While we're on the subject,is it just me who finds long fingernails on men creepy? I remember many years ago,I went into a cafe for lunch. When I paid,I noticed that the man on the till had hideously long finger nails. It made me shudder, and ever since then,it's something that I always notice about a man.

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 28/11/2018 23:16

I clean mine at least a dozen times a day, yet they look dirty minutes later. I work in a lovely clean building, no idea why it is, have always been that way. So judge me if you like, that'll help me feel less paranoid about it Confused

EBearhug · 28/11/2018 23:17

Yes and no. My father was a farmer, my mother a gardener, so I have spent much of my life round dirty nails. However, my parents were pretty good at scrubbing their hands when needs be; you want hands and arms as clean as possible if you need to put them in a cow which is having difficulty calving, for example, because of the infection risk. Mind you, these days, you probably put latex gloves on.

I have seen sporn videos where they have uncovered hands, and dirty fingernails, and that I really don't like. It's not like being in the workshop.

LoveManyTrustfew · 28/11/2018 23:23

I leave the house with sparkling nails, Halo by mid day there is dirt under them, I work in a building that is 100 years old, is in a builders yard and we have vast amounts of plant out in the yard.

So judge away, you would be barking up the wrong tree. Grin
