I like either of these for breakfast but bit bored of how I have them. Any ideas please!

Bircher! Mix the oats with grated apple, yoghurt, spoon of honey, nuts - shive it in the fridge overnight and it’s bloody lovely. A bit like pudding. Raspberries too.

OnceUponAGiraffe · 27/11/2018 16:22

Frozen raspberries or blueberries in porridge

A little pinch of cinnamon

Apple purée

Banana

I cup oats, 2 cold water. Bring to boil (keep stirring so that it’s smoothe) then let it simmer like a giser for a while (give it the odd stir - or do what mum used to do ‘hey Fekko come here a minute - oh just give this stir will you I need to go and get some eggs....... (mum disappears for 20 mins leaving me to stir) until it’s done - it gets a transparent ring around the edge and domes up slightly.

You dont need sugar 🤨

Overnight oats:
1 x actimel (strawberry or raspberry esp nice)
Splash of extra milk (dairy or non)
Fresh/frozen blueberries
Couple of macadamia nuts
Chopped Brazil nuts
Few chopped Walnuts
Flaked almonds
Sprinkle of flaxseed
Sprinkle of Pumpkins seeds
Sprinkle of turmeric

Lots of goodness and tastes delicious. I like that the Brazil nuts soften a little and don’t break your teeth.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 27/11/2018 16:30

Flapjacks! 😉

Ahh, my special subject. I tend to soak porridge overnight and if I fancy adding yoghurt then I do it in the morning after I've cooked it . A selection of sugar free syrups will be your friend here. I also add chia / linseeds etc into mine sometimes.

Carrot cake oats:
Put oats in container
Add milk to desired amount
add handful of raisins
add cinammon
add grated carrot
sweeten it with whatever you feel goes nicely

Cherry bakewell oats:
Porridge oats
Milk / milk alternative
frozen cherries
almond syrup / almond essence
sprinkle with almonds and maybe some cherry compote once heated

Black forest oats:
Porridge oats
milk / milk alternative
sachet of hot chocolate / 15g powder or that choc shot stuff, probably about 15g.
Frozen cherries

Tropical oats:
Porridge oats
milk / milk alternative
coconut syrup / dessicated coconut
fruit to taste - kiwi / mango / raspberries all work nicely
sprinkle with toasted coconut or dried mango etc after heating

Blueberry and lemon oats:
Porridge oats
Milk / milk alternative
lemon curd
add bluberries before heating, so they explode in the microwave / pan.

If you use frozen fruit, reduce the milk slightly to allow for the water.

There were some nice suggestions in the October issue of Good Food - you might find them on the app. From memory, poach s peeled pear in water, a bit of sugar and some vanilla and serve with some flaked almonds; a sliced banana and some coconut yogurt; some roasted plums. We often just have defrosted frozen berries and a scoop of yogurt with a drizzle of honey.

thekingfisher · 27/11/2018 16:31

Do you have overnight oats hot or cold?

BarbaraofSevillle · 27/11/2018 16:31

They sell one in M&S that's chocolate flavour. I need to look into how to make that one because I'm not paying £2-3 for a tiny pot of oats and yogurt no matter how nice it looks.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 27/11/2018 16:31

Well Bircher is cold.

BinkyBuntyFintyCunty · 27/11/2018 16:33

cuzcothellama your cherry and carrot ones sound gorgeous.

Can I come and live with you?

BinkyBuntyFintyCunty · 27/11/2018 16:34

thekingfisher cold

OneStepMoreFun · 27/11/2018 16:35

Frozen mixed berries stirred into the oats: raspberries, blackberries, mixed red and blackcurrants and sometimes strawberries.

Cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger with honey is lovely

Grated apple and cinnamon, put on top afterwards so the apple is raw and sweet and crunchy

Chopped banana and frozen raspberry stirred in and cooked with the porridge with a drop of vanilla essence is also lovely

Cream and maple syrup if you are not weightwatching/off sugar

BinkyBuntyFintyCunty · 27/11/2018 16:37

barbaraofseville cocoa powder mixed in?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 27/11/2018 16:38

I usually have them Bircher style, and make a lot, it keeps really nicely.

I do like the carrot cake idea though.

BinkyBuntyFintyCunty · 27/11/2018 16:41

I’ve mixed up my ‘acti-s’ in my recipe above. Should be Actimel (little probiotic bottles).

nevermorelenore · 27/11/2018 16:43

Chopped banana and some dark chocolate chips are my favourite. Or a swirl of peanut butter.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 27/11/2018 16:47

Not keen on Actimel. Too much plastic waste.

Cuzcothellama · 27/11/2018 16:49

I've got some chocolate orange ones soaking for tomorrow, I'm really looking forward to them.

Porridge oats
hazelnut & cacao milk
Linseeds
choc shot orange spice

I'm going to top them with a chocolate orange seed shot thing from asda and satsuma segments. Can't wait!!

KindergartenKop · 27/11/2018 16:53

Peanut butter and strawberries/jam.

BinkyBuntyFintyCunty · 27/11/2018 16:57

Chardonnaysprettysister ‘The bottles are 100% recyclable and can be recycled in the same way as plastic milk bottles. Actimel said: “The look, colour and texture of the bottle remain the same and the great taste of Actimel has not changed.”31 Oct 2011

Enjoy your choc orange ones cuzcothellama - they sound really good.

XenakisCarter · 27/11/2018 17:09

1/4 cup oats
1 tbs cocoa powder
1 tbs chia seeds
1 tbs linseeds/flaxseeds
1 tbs sunflower seeds
1 tbs 100% peanut/almond butter
1 tsp maple syrup
2/3 cup oat milk

Mix well and leave overnight. In the morning, add some branflakes for crunch, and whatever fruit you fancy. I usually have banana and raspberries.

Coniferhedge · 27/11/2018 17:11

Not the healthiest way to eat porridge, but at this time of year I put mincemeat in mine. Make porridge as you normally would - I use oats and skimmed milk, no sugar. When it’s done just stir in a spoon of mincemeat straight from the jar. Delicious!
