Strange things you used to enjoy doing as a child

As im doing the housework, i remember how much i used to enjoy cleaning the toilet when i was little... Used to beg my mum to let me clean it, she didnt always let me, which im guessing was guilt as it shouldnt really be an enjoyable job??

Did anyone else find weird things enjoyable/a treat when you were little?

I used to take the moss out from between pavement slabs, using an ice cream stick. Would be at it for hours. Even now I find it incredibly satisfying!

I used to sweep up the whole street with a brush. Street was about 150 metres long. I’d just sweep up all the street’s rubbish to my drive and bin it!

I’d sing really loud from our bathroom window. Always “gin gangooly gooly gooly gooly goo” on loop, until I got bored. I stopped after one of our good neighbours walked past and shouted “shut that racket up” . he had no idea it was me

I used to come home for school lunch. I’d return 10 mins before the bell went so that I could play, but as in already felt like an outsider being the only kid who went home for lunch, I didn’t want to do the whole awkward thing of coming onto the school field like Billy no mates and looking for my friends. So I’d always run in frantically to the field and keep looking behind me, pretending I was playing tic a nic with somebody else, and then casually join my friends while pretending to be excited/out of breath that I was playing tic or nic with somebody else

If I ever got sent upstairs for being naughty, I’d continuously roll off the bed deliberately to land on the floor with a thud so that my parents would hear it through the ceiling and rush upstairs in guilt . They never did!

All through my childhood I kept wearing shoes without socks because I liked how it felt, especially trainers with soft insides. I was secretly delighted at primary school when we were made to put shoes on bare feet to walk from the classroom to the assembly hall for PE.

As young as age four I remember having a pair of red shoes like these, which I'd slip my bare feet into first thing in the morning, and run around with the straps flapping; running away from my mum who would be on hands and knees, ready to do the buckles up. I didn't like that because I couldn't yet undo them myself, so my feet were imprisoned!

Once when playing hide and seek and someone else's house, I hid in a dog cage. When I was found, I didn't want to come out. I couldn't get out after one of the older kids found a padlock and locked me in, but I didn't mind at all - I stayed there for a long time, and pretended to be Hansel, holding out a bone instead of his finger. I kept hoping to be locked up like a zoo animal again, but it never happened!

I'm autistic, so there were a lot of things I really enjoyed doing that would be considered odd. Holding my thumbs over my ears and pressing to change sounds, humming, reciting the ballad of Reading Goal repeatedly (which I thought was pronounced 'g-ole' until adulthood), counting the little girls on my bedroom curtain fabric, memorising the Argos catalogue and writing lists of the product numbers, tapping my nose, scrunching down to the bottom of the bath with my ears under the water and moving super-slowly upwards towards the other end - could do that for hours!

Making 'birds nests' out of grass on the field behind my house
Collecting frogspawn from the ponds on the golfcourse and putting it in my friend's pond next door
Collecting frogs and newts
I used to love climbing trees (one in particular), whenever my mum used to shout me in for tea she said my dad would say "have you checked the tree?" if I didn't come back
I also went through a strange phase of collecting wishbones from chickens, my dad used to save them for me and I had a row of them on my bedroom windowsill lol, I was an odd child at times but my parents didn't mind (I don't think!)
Going cotton knocking round the block when we were allowed out late in the summer was one of my favourite things, I'd go bloody mad if kids did that to me now Grin
Probably loads more weird things but I can't think of them off the top of my head!

I loved reading as a child (still do!) and I used to go to the library daily. If I’d read all my books I used to lie on my tummy in the dining room reading the Yellow Pages and telephone directory! Blush

I was a weird kid!

Ameteur embalming. I would find dead insects (moths were the best), put them in a small tub full of vinegar and bury them in the garden.

God knows what I was thinking, and god knows what the people who bought my parents house thought if they ever dug up the garden Blush

Yes to potions

Playing post offices complete with homemade money and stamps-doesn't sound so odd except my best friend and I used to do this when we were old enough to be left home alone for weekends Blush

Oh and I used to make things out of flint like cave people (except I doubt we actually had flint in our garden so probably just random rocks)
