Is a 10yo too old for a Nintendo DS?

The Switch is totally unaffordable for us....but would DS10 be very disappointed after a few months with a DS instead? He reckons he'd like one, but I think he just thinks it'll be similar to a Switch...
He has an Xbox so this would be more personal/individual use.

They are so much cheaper, but I don't want it to gather dust after a month or two....any thoughts?

Hmm. I know nothing about the switch but my husband and I both still like playing with ds’s DS!

Questionsquestionsquestions · 23/11/2018 23:01

Thanks - I can't decide whether to go for it with a good deal that Argos have, before it;s too late...!

If its any help my 11 amd 8 year olds both traded their DS's in tbis year as "no one plays with DS anymore" and they would rather play on their phones and xbox.

My daughter is ten and loves her DS

I have a 15 yr old, 11 yr old and an 8 yr old who all still use DSs. The 17 yr old not so much, but they did get a Switch between them for Christmas last year and he prefers that.

It all depends on the individual person for how much/how long they are going to use the console for.

There are still plenty of new and second hand games for a DS too. CEX is handy for cheaper used games if you have one nearby.

Also, with the console, you will have to decide which one to get. There are a few to choose from e.g. 2DS, 3DS, DSi, etc. some come in the XL version too but others are only available second hand. (3DS is generally what people get nowadays, but a 2DS is generally cheaper.)

Happy shopping.

NotACleverName · 24/11/2018 08:38

I don't think so. I get a lot of us out of my 3DS, and I'm 33!

allthingsred · 24/11/2018 08:43

No we got my ds a 2nd hand 2ds last year & he still plays on it.
Not all the time as he enjoys his xbox more. But when we are in the car or going camping he always packs it & it still gets played with

empmalswa · 24/11/2018 08:44

Go for a decent DS, a foldable one. The 2DS that doesn't fold looks really childish. The 3DS is much neater.

14, 10 and 8 here and they all still play on their 3DSs. I guess it’s individual taste but they are by no means obsolete yet! We travel by train a lot and they are a godsend!

empmalswa · 24/11/2018 10:10

spoke with an optometrist (in a social situation) and she said she didn't recommend the 3ds for children and adolescents.

Any particular reason?

Littlepond · 24/11/2018 10:10

You can turn off the 3D if you are concerned about that too

Oh right, the optometrist was meaning the 3D function!

Sake I was only asking. Not much point in saying someone told you it's bad without any explanation.

I realise now you were referring to the 3D function rather than the condole as a whole.

My mum bought me a Nintendo ds when I was a teenager, I still have it and would play with it (probs more if I didn't have dc to look after haha) great gift!

empmalswa · 24/11/2018 10:26

assumed that it was self-evidently related to the 3d function when I said I purchased the the (non 3)DS.

You assumed incorrectly then. When I spoke about 2DS/3DS I was talking about the ability to fold the 3DS. The 3D function didn't even cross my mind. None of mine use it though.

The defensive bit came from the daft ass wink along with the 'easy to research online comment'. I genuinely asked why because I didn't consider the 3D function. That was all.

JoyceDivision · 24/11/2018 10:26

Try 2ds XL, DC enjoy more screen for better games. Like other posters they use it, abandon it for a while, then pick it backup.... But useful for long carjourneys etc

martingoresnipplechain · 24/11/2018 10:31

I got one for Christmas when I was 10 or so, still play the solitaire and card games on it now so I would say it's definitely been worth the money Smile

17 DSS still buys games for his DS. But if he’s been used to Xbox games he might not like it as the games are like pokemon and other more child friendly games. I’m not explaining myself well!
