How can I dress this fireplace to make it look really smart?

My fireplace is just like this one pictured, only mine is painted white with bright turquoise original tiles. Mine's slighly more twee unfortunately in that it also has small 'bell' flowers in plaster either side of the mirror. I want to dress it so it looks less bare & try to make it look a bit more modern in it's presentation at the same time. The wall it's on is painted a pale bone grey.

Could you strip it back? The turquoise tiles sound lovely

CornflakeGhetto · 22/11/2018 21:28

I thought of some kind of plant on the shelf in front of the mirror but that feels very granny to me. I don't want to strip it back to bare wood as mine was designed to be painted with the plaster flowers.

I did start stripping it back but the wood underneath is shitey & I almost dissolved the flowers as I didn't realise they wouldn't be made of wood. Blush rookie mistake

Can you post a picture of the actual fireplace? It sounds lovely.

Momasita · 22/11/2018 21:30

Sounds perfect to me, already painted white, nice tiles.

You could just paint it another colour and paint the tiles another colour.

CornflakeGhetto · 22/11/2018 21:35

I didn't want to post my fireplace because of the shitey mess Grin but I'll just go & have a look & see if I can...

Here. Ignore the mess, the room is a work-in-progress. Just waiting for the carpenter to finish so we can paint. Grin

Sounds gorgeous already.
This is my fireplace, not similar, but it is dressed in a modern style with neon candles, fairy lights, succulent plant etc.

I think it's a bit clashy to be honest, I'd paint it a dark navy blue, something like farrow and ball stiffkey.

JulieBindelAteMyHomework · 22/11/2018 21:42

Have you tried Pinterest ?

Ballbags · 22/11/2018 21:43

Are the tiles painted or is that their actual colour?

Bluntness100 · 22/11/2018 21:43

Oops, cross posted with ballbags, but that's the sort of thing I mean!

MisstoMrs · 22/11/2018 21:44

I agree with @bluntness paint it f&b...railings, stiffkey or pitch black.

Justlikedevon · 22/11/2018 21:46

White is a bit stark with the turquoise. What colour is the rest of your room going to be/is already?

Justlikedevon · 22/11/2018 21:48

Sorry, missed the bone grey comment.
Id go for very dark grey surround.

showmethegin · 22/11/2018 21:52

Where's that rug from @Ballbags?

Bluntness100 · 22/11/2018 21:52

I'm also curious if the tiles are painted or if that's their real colour?

JMAngel1 · 22/11/2018 21:54

it's beautiful but agree the wood would look better painted a dark grey - don't agree with stiffkey, think it would clash. But downpipe or railings would look gorgeous or even a black so that it almost mimicked a cast iron fireplace - this would also reduce the twee factor with the flowers. I wouldn't put any accessories in or on it - let it be the statement on it's own.

CornflakeGhetto · 22/11/2018 21:54

I love yours ballbags Trouble with mine is that it's so tall. With this pathetic shelf bit that's not quite wide enough to hold much. The turquoise tiles are a bit in-your-face. They're original, not painted. This room will be a therapy room that I see clients in so I'm trying to be careful with the colours. I'm really after ideas for artful stuff I can put on the shelf to dress it. I did think of painting the surround but it's hard to get any colour to sit easily next to those in-your-face tiles.

Keep it very simple

I would probably paint the chimney breast then so the fireplace pops out more. Room looks a bit cold but hard to tell without seeing rest of it.

OliviaBenson · 22/11/2018 22:03

Dark grey paint for the surround would look stunning.
