How can I dress this fireplace to make it look really smart?

My fireplace is just like this one pictured, only mine is painted white with bright turquoise original tiles. Mine's slighly more twee unfortunately in that it also has small 'bell' flowers in plaster either side of the mirror. I want to dress it so it looks less bare & try to make it look a bit more modern in it's presentation at the same time. The wall it's on is painted a pale bone grey.

Isn’t grey a bit 2015?

You could dress it with lots of plants. Sting of hearts is a particularly lovely one.

The whole thing is lovely. Paint the surround a nice dark grey, then accessorize with a fire and a few bits of nice old china on the shelf

Ballbags, does that light ok?

Ballbags · 22/11/2018 22:15

@fucksgiven sorry, what lights ok?!

Fucksgiven · 22/11/2018 22:19

The fire

I think it needs a mantel shelf or wider shelf than the one there? Similar to ball bags. Those wooden surrounds are not expensive.

It's a picture from Google, mine's the one on the first page. Doesn't look very practical though does it?!

CornflakeGhetto · 22/11/2018 22:31

Not sure what you mean Ceilingrose I can't change the surround or shelf dimension.

Ah, yours is lovely (as are your colours) ballbags.

Oh my god, we had that exact brown fireplace when we moved in to this house,
We had it for nearly 10 long years until we smashed it out last Christmas - never have I wielded so much pleasure in using a hammer Grin
Exactly the same, tall, narrow shelf on top, shallow fireplace...
We still have a hole in our living room and this weekend are driving to collect a new fireplace!
No advice, other than to remove it completely, but your tiles are a much nicer colour than ours!

I’d dress it with

Logs in the fire basket ( assuming you are not going to light the fire)

A picture propped on one side of the shelf ( wedge with blue tac)

Tall thin Plant or vase of flowers and Some interesting shaped bottles or vases on the shelf

Make it balanced but not symmetrical

I’d get some objects in the same turquoise colour as the tiles to make them look less random.

And I’d put a larger plant on the side of the hearth.

You don’t need to change the tiles or paint the surround. Buy a couple of pictures with turquoise in them and a cushion in the same colour .

Just a few touches of turquoise in the room will work with your pale grey and give a restful feel.

I like it. By dress up do you mean a mantlepiece shelfie?

Ballbags is that a cricket sofa? Is it comfortable I'm ] [ < that close to ordering one.

Yes it's the Sofology Cricket sofa. It's comfortable, not in a squishy, lovely soft way, but nice enough.

Ceilingrose · 23/11/2018 17:45

Ignore me. On closer inspection I see it would be difficult.
