Happy Thanksgiving Day!

MissConductUS · 22/11/2018 10:12

Just a quick post to wish all of my fellow MN'ers a happy Thanksgiving Day. I am thankful for so many things, including my lovely family and friends, a job I enjoy and the fact that I don't have to cook today as my SIL is hosting the big meal! Smile

I've always liked this little Thanksgiving prayer by the American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson:

For each new morning with its light,,
For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food,
For love and friends,
For everything Thy goodness sends.

And thank you Mumsnet for all I've learned here and the friends I've made.

Happy Thanksgiving Smile

I grew up in NYC, though I live in England now. We used to take a long, long walk on Thanksgiving, to avoid hanging around food all day (and get hungry enough for dinner to be a treat). A few times my parents picked up waifs in the course of their expedition. One year they started talking to an old man on the Staten Island Ferry, and he came back to our house for dinner. He was a defrocked Hungarian priest, who was living in a shelter, having escaped from Hungary in the 50s. He told incredible stories all evening. I think it was great that my parents would bring random people home for a good meal.

Any other traditions?

WhyDidIEatThat · 22/11/2018 10:36

Happy thanksgiving 😊

We bring randoms in for a meal! Extra points if a total stranger but generally some bemused acquaintance.

Traditionally don’t eat traditional fare but going for it this year.

Extra thankful this year after loads of genetic genealogical research showed extensive interdependence between our colonial and Native American ancestors, obviously it’s good and bad (gt gt gt grandma married gt gt gt grandpa to escape the trail of tears, he married her for land) but as always overwhelmingly thankful for my children 💕

Happy Thanksgiving! We celebrate the Canadian one back in October as my family are from there. Although we live in the UK now. It is much the same though and a lovely holiday. Hope you have a fabulous day!

WhyDidIEatThat · 22/11/2018 10:51

One potential maternal line goes back to the mayflower so extra frissons for connections to that group present at the first Thanksgiving whether or not directly descended from someone that group.

WhyDidIEatThat · 22/11/2018 11:03

Love to know what’s on everyone else’s menu 😋

MissConductUS · 22/11/2018 12:07

Love to know what’s on everyone else’s menu

SIL is doing roast turkey and assorted vegetables. We're bringing

  • holiday mashed potatoes (whipped with butter, sour cream, cream cheese then baked in a casserole dish with a layer of cheddar cheese on top). Recipe available upon request if you ask nicely. Smile
  • Jumbo prawns with cocktail sauce and lemon wedges
  • brie cheese and posh crackers
  • dry Italian sweet sausage
  • homemade apple pie and sugar cookies.

I think she'll have picked up another pie or two. We'll need to eat to stay warm. It's currently -8 here, going down to -11. And we had 10 inches of snow last week. Shock

WhyDidIEatThat · 22/11/2018 13:23

Wow that all sounds incredible. Please please pretty please holiday mashed potatoes 🙏🏼

I still haven’t looked at our full menu in family group chat, a real team effort, but I’m in charge of candied yams which we haven’t had for years and years. There’s definitely cornbread, chicken instead of turkey, sweet potato pie for pudding but I’ll leave the unknown sides as a surprise for myself later.

Overwhelmingly sad that middle daughter won’t be here this year which is silly because I’ll see her soon 💔

theoldtrout01876 · 22/11/2018 13:47

Im Scottish and dh is English. We will be doing a traditional British Christmas dinner for Thanksgiving. Grin. I cant be doing with candied yams or marshmallows in my squash or that green bean casserole thing with the dried onions that EVERYONE eats around here
I have roast turkey with sage and onion stuffing.
Cranberry sauce
Bacon rolls and home made Christmas chipolatas
Roast carrots and parsnips
Butternut squash with nutmeg
and of course sprouts

Pudding is a gingerbread cheesecake with lemon ginger glaze

Oh and Im doing a warm holiday lentil salad for the vegetarian Dd

My adult sons are coming home to eat and will be hanging out in my kitchen pinching bacon rolls and saying "im hungry ma" and generally driving me nuts

I cant wait Grin

MissConductUS · 22/11/2018 14:09

@WhyDidIEatThat your menu sounds fabulous. I'd like to do roast chicken sometime too instead of turkey, but my SIL is driving the bus.

Sorry about missing your middle daughter. Our son is home from his first year at university, so we're thrilled to have him back.

I PM'd you about the recipe. It's amazing. Grin

Happy Thanksgiving to you all! I moved back from the US a few weeks ago and am missing it today- it's lovely to hear what you're all eating. I spent some very happy Thanksgiving days there over the last few years Smile.

WhyDidIEatThat · 22/11/2018 15:25

Thank you missconduct

SenecaFalls · 22/11/2018 15:40

I'm in the coastal South so in addition to the usual Thanksgiving fare, we are having shrimp and grits. Also macaroni and cheese, which is a Southern tradition for Thanksgiving. And key lime pie in addition to pumpkin and apple. And cornbread dressing, of course.

Happy Thanksgiving, y'all!

MissConductUS · 22/11/2018 15:43

Great to hear from you SenecaFalls, have a lovely holiday youze zall y'all.

(That was my NY accent, just in case that wasn't clear.) Smile

senecafalls is my kinfolks 😀

SenecaFalls · 22/11/2018 15:55

Smile for MissConductUS DH is from NY (upstate not the City) but he's been down here so long he sounds almost Southern.

SillyPsychicAcid · 22/11/2018 16:04

And Happy Thanksgiving to you too.

I am thankful I have a secure family I love to enjoy the holidays with. Wasn’t always like that for me growing up, so I really appreciate it.

Our tradition is to binge watch the Thanksgiving episodes of the Middle and eat too much.*

*We’re not in or of the US, but it’s nice to be thankful.

QueenCity · 22/11/2018 16:05

Happy Thanksgiving y'all! Smile

We're having roast turkey, cornbread dressing, mashed and roast potatoes, sprouts, carrots, green beans, lots of cranberry relish and gravy. We've got key lime pie and pumpkin pie for pudding. I've also made some little tarts which my mum makes every Christmas so as they baked last night and the smell wafted around the house I was having pangs of home sickness.

It's a beautiful, sunny day here so we'll be going out for a good long dog walk to burn off some calories later. Have a wonderful day everyone!

MissConductUS · 22/11/2018 16:32

senecafalls is my kinfolks

Then feel free to share the recipe with her, but I may have already given it to her at some point.

Seneca, I'm from the Hudson Valley, so I don't actually have a heavy NYC accent either, but it's fun to pretend. I probably sound just like your husband used to.

SillyPsychicAcid it's great to hear that you celebrate the holiday in the spirit it deserves. It's such a nice contrast to the commercialization of Christmas.

QueenCity, are you in the US? Your handle is a common reference to both Cincinnati, OH and Charlotte, NC. It's a beautiful clear day here too, and your menu sounds lovely.

OP posts:
WhyDidIEatThat · 22/11/2018 16:36

😀 I’m assuming we’re almost certainly cousins due to extent of intermarriage between Scottish settlers in the Carolinas

But obviously we’re all one big family on MN 😀

SenecaFalls · 22/11/2018 17:01

That's right. We talked about the cousin thing on another thread. Supposedly there is more Scottish DNA (whatever that may be) in the Carolinas than in Scotland.

As to Cincinnati and Charlotte being the Queen City, only one of them was actually named for a queen. Smile

SillyPsychicAcid · 22/11/2018 17:10

That’s interesting Seneca. I’m Scottish. Been thinking about doing one of those DNA genealogy profile things for a while now. Considering it for our next birthday (DH and I have the same birthday) as a nice shared thing.

QueenCity · 22/11/2018 17:27

@MissConductUS I'm near Charlotte. I had no idea about Cincinnati also being called Queen City too!

AcrossthePond55 · 22/11/2018 17:45

Happy Thanksgiving from No California. We've had a good rain which has helped immensely with the fires, although hasn't been a 'blessing' for those who have been made homeless by this disaster.

We're having the 'usual' turkey, stuffing, mash & gravy along with the 'infamous' green been casserole and a few other things. For dessert there will be two macadamia nut pies. I used to do one pumpkin and one mac nut, but this year I was overruled by the family in favour of the two nut pies. Seems I'm the only one who likes pumpkin.

SenecaFalls · 22/11/2018 18:56

Happy Thanksgiving, Across. Hope you and yours are okay.
