And is it Fish and Chips or a Fish Supper where you live? Genuinely interested (and hungry)

We go to the chippy to have a chip shop dinner!
Birmingham.

DramaAlpaca · 21/11/2018 20:17

I grew up with fish & chips from the chippy in NW England.

I now live in Ireland & it's the chipper, not the chippy.

I'd never use the term fish supper.

amilosingitor · 21/11/2018 20:18

West coast of Scotland, chip shop and supper. Single means no chips, supper means with chips. My friends boyfriend and her got into a fight as she had a ‘single saudage’ But you get given two, he was Foreign and said she was lying anbout it being a ‘single’ they argued so much he threw her sausage out the window.

Pea wet is the juice of the mushy peas and scraps are bits of batter that have fallen off battered fish etc.

MrsJayy · 21/11/2018 20:48

Bombaybunty · 21/11/2018 20:55

Fish and chips from the chip shop. I'm in SE.

Bumblebee2302 · 21/11/2018 20:59

It's a fish supper from the chippie here in Belfast - never heard it referred to as a chipper

Another thing I have wondered is do other regions ever refer to a portion of chips as just "a chip" or is it just a NI thing? I was in a chippie in England recently with a Norn Iron friend who confused the server by ordering "a chip" and she thought he was asking for a single, solitary chip - I had to step in a suggest he wanted "a portion of chips"!

The same also applies here to gravy chip, curry chip, cheesey chip etc (it would NEVER be called chips and curry or chips and gravy here)

AmIthatbloodycold · 21/11/2018 21:07

I'm in Perthshire so I'd have a fish supper from the chippy.

I have friends 20 miles away in Dundee who would get theirs from the chipper

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 21/11/2018 21:10

Chip shop or as my now 7yo used to say when he was younger 'sipsop' Grin. We don't have it often, only 2 or 3 times a year. Because of this it always tastes amazing.

LIZS · 21/11/2018 21:10

Chippy , a chipper is the machine that cuts chips.

AlpineButterfly · 21/11/2018 21:12

@SoupDragon we also go to the chicken shop Grin

FuzzyCustard · 21/11/2018 21:13

Fish and chips from the chip van.

We have a weekly visit from the chip van in our village square. It's brilliant.

Stephisaur · 21/11/2018 21:14

In the west midlands.

SayKnockKnock · 21/11/2018 21:17

BobbinThreadbare123 · 21/11/2018 21:18

Chippy tea from the chippy. Although it'd be a proper Chinese chippy in my home city. Now I live in the land of bloody pea wet....

SlowlyShrinking · 21/11/2018 21:19

We have chippy from the chippy

BumDisease · 21/11/2018 21:21

Chippy/ fish supper.

Chippy tea gives me the rage.

EnidButton · 21/11/2018 21:21

sausage supper That sounds like something else altogether.

'I'll have to go Beryl, our Harry'll be back from pub soon n he'll be wanting a "sausage supper".'

EnidButton · 21/11/2018 21:22

Only on a Friday mind..

ShowOfHands · 21/11/2018 21:36

Chish and fips.

3out · 21/11/2018 21:47

Can’t beat a double sausage supper

Notquiteagandt · 21/11/2018 21:48

It is a fish super, a sausage or pie dinner around here.

The "chippy" is either a one stop shop for fish and chips and chinese take out. Or a proper fish and chip shop. Which all seem to be greek owned around here.

Cuzcothellama · 21/11/2018 21:57

Chippy = Where you get chips.

Chippie = Carpenter.
