I think they are overpriced and you are paying for the name. Plus you have to use Apple store rather than the apps that you can use for android tablets. Ipads have Safari rather than Google too which I don't like. I've used my nan's ipad and I found it slow and it didn't do anything my Samsung doesn't. Quite happy with my Samsung and it was a lot cheaper too.

Sheitgeist · 21/11/2018 11:20

I've had various tablets and have much preferred the iPad over any other. They're far more fast, sleek and user friendly than others I've tried.

Sheitgeist · 21/11/2018 11:21

Oops two conflicting pieces of advice for you there, OP! Grin

OhSoStressed · 21/11/2018 11:23

IMO iPads are by far the best, as for as longevity and quality are concerned.
I highly recommend Music Magpie. I have bought from there reconditioned phones and tablets - they come with a warranty and the 3 I have, have been perfect.
They have 3 levels of resale
Good - signs of wear and tear on the back
Very good - slight scuffs or scrapes
Pristine - as you'd expect. Perfect condition.

Probably worth mentioning the screens are always in perfect condition, any marks or scuffs will always be on the shell.

I love my lenovo android tablet (it folds out to have a keyboard of sorts as well) because the solid metal case on it takes one hell of a battering and being flung into my handbag - but I'm finally cracking and saving up to buy an iPad as well as a lot of the apps that I want DD2 to be able to access (she has real difficulty writing because of poor motor skills) seem to be iPad only.

Bombardier25966 · 21/11/2018 11:27

What phone does he have?

People generally stick with Apple or Android technologies.

Sheitgeist · 21/11/2018 11:30

To address a couple of the criticisms above:

You have to use Apple store - so what? It has just as many and as good apps as Android

It has Safari, not Google - that's just the name of the browser: you can still use Google and have it as your homepage.

Google Chrome is a browser in itself. I expect that's what the previous poster was referring to.

Karwomannghia · 21/11/2018 11:34

We got Tesco tablets for the kids a few years ago which were highly recommended at the time. They didn’t last long, slowed down, not great to use. Got them mini iPads and wouldn’t get anything else now they’ve lasted ages.

Sheitgeist · 21/11/2018 11:35

But you can use chrome as the browser as well: install and set as default.

bringbackthestripes · 21/11/2018 11:38

ipad. ipad. ipad. Grin

Karwomannghia · 21/11/2018 11:40

If you go for a new iPad I’d recommend buying from John Lewis as they have a 2year guarantee whereas apple only have 1. Also get a good case and screen protector.

Bombardier25966 · 21/11/2018 11:40

You can indeed use the Chrome browser on ipad.

None of this really matters though, we need to know what tech the brother has already.

Usernumbers1234 · 21/11/2018 11:42

You can use Chrome on an IPad, and anecdotally the apple store seems a vastly safer place than the android equivalents.

In my opinion it is the best tablet on the market but not the best value for money tablet on the market.

As a previous poster said - the key is what other devices they use. If they have an iPhone and a Mac then the integration is fantastical, and for me worth the extra money. if they have android devices then a compatible one may suit them better.

toolazytothinkofausername · 21/11/2018 11:46

My son got an iPad Air 2 when he was 3yo (wasn't talking at the time, we bought it to help with communication). He is now 6yo and still adores it! Screen quality is exceptional. He plays educational games and watches Kids YouTube. Worth every penny!

Sheitgeist · 21/11/2018 11:47

Maybe. I'm getting a new iPad for Christmas from DH. I have a Windows laptop and an android phone. I don't really need all my tech to talk to each other.

Depends how a new tablet is going to be used.

Sheitgeist · 21/11/2018 11:47

Sorry, that was in response to the suggestion that the tablet should match the phone.

Karwomannghia · 21/11/2018 11:49

Yes I have a windows laptop that does my head in with its constant needs but an iPhone and iPad that don’t have much to do with each other.

BlueUggs · 21/11/2018 11:49

I've had an iPad in the past and bought my son an amazon fire hd tablet because it was on sale.

What a mistake!! It's slow, clunky and hard to use.

The iPad works brilliantly as is easy to navigate.
Well worth the extra cost!

ReverseTheFerret · 21/11/2018 11:57

See what's coming out here is that a lot of it depends on what you want to use it for and what else you have in terms of tech.

Fire tablets work brilliantly for some uses in this house - they're cheap, and you can put Google play store on them - and DD2 uses one with the Google jailbreak on it with an app that lets her photograph a worksheet and then tap and type anywhere on there to complete it - total cost of the tech required - £30 for the tablet and a tenner for a really really cheap bluetooth keyboard. I'm not going to be devastated if it gets broken and it does the job for that kind of use - plus the fire for kids stuff with our subscription to it makes it handy for our kids at their age... and Amazon had a replacement out within a day when the charger port broke on one of ours 1 week before the warranty was up.

Would I want to use one as my own tablet? Nope because they're slow and clunky for what I need - but they work well for that, and they work well for my techno-moron step father who has one of the kids old ones (we upgraded to better memory ones when new models came out) and is very happy with it to pootle along on the BBC news website and send the odd email.

I love my stock android one because of the design I mentioned before (it's a getting-on-in-age Yoga Book) - not the greatest technology in the world but I love the keyboard part of it and the hinge design and how hard wearing it is. But it doesn't run a fair few apps I really would like DD2 to have access to.

So all of them have drawbacks and it depends how it fits with the rest of the stuff you use - pointless buying an iPad if you've bought a load of Android apps you want to use and vice versa.

Nat6999 · 21/11/2018 11:58

I've got a Samsung tablet as I have Samsung mobile, it's very quick, I have an additional memory card to increase the memory, using Android means you can download unlicensed apps, I have Show box on mine that has new movies that are still in the cinema & everything that is on Amazon & Netflix, it's all free. My Android tablet isn't as temperamental as my mum's iPad, I use it for general browsing, playing games, reading, office stuff, music, watching films & TV.

bobstersmum · 21/11/2018 12:01

I can't get along with apple phones, but ipads are way better than android tablets.

Sheitgeist · 21/11/2018 12:05

And illegal Confused

sugarbum · 21/11/2018 12:12

never had an ipad so I can't comment. The best tablet we have ever had (its still going) is the hudl2. Runs everything I throw at it. So sad they don't do them any more.
Nexus7 was good (till I dropped it)
Can't bear the Amazon Fire.
Son got an argos branded one (was it alba?) and its slow and resolution crap
I think if we ever get another one, we will try an ipad

LaChatte · 21/11/2018 12:21

Typing this on my 5 year old iPad mini. Worked great for the first 18 months, then an iOS update crippled the Internet browser. No way of going back to previous iOS, can no longer do any updates as too old. It still works, but you need to have a LOT of patience, safari page refreshes all the time. Still takes great photos, Netflix works fine, as does music and games.
