How can I be a (warm) Victorian woman outdoors

Helping out at an event for three days. Would prefer not to spend £bajillion, have a women’s top hat - what else do I need, and can I get it quickly online? 🙏🏼

A tartan blanket round your shoulders?

CherryPavlova · 19/11/2018 20:45

Lots of layers. Warm thermal underwear.

BikeRunSki · 19/11/2018 20:46

Thermals!
Woolly socks - something like this?

ScreamingValenta · 19/11/2018 20:49

A thick woollen shawl, or anything that will pass as one.

BillywigSting · 19/11/2018 20:49

Cotton underslip, petticoat, wool tights, long sleeve cotton blouse, corset /tight waistcoat, tailored short jacket matching over skirt

one of those massive blanket scarves that are floating around at the moment.

Victorian clothes are much warmer outdoors than one-layer figure-skimming modern stuff! Start with bloomers (shorts will do if no one will see) and then add several cotton or wool or flannel full length full skirts over it - it is the best thing, basically your legs feel like they are still inside your duvet even if the outermost layer gets damp!

Never tried it myself, but apparently a warm pair of socks then a bread bag on each foot then another pair of socks works wonders for keeping your feet warm.

Try it and let me know 😀

WhyDidIEatThat · 19/11/2018 21:09

Fab ideas, thanks all 😀

Are you getting ready for the Dickensian, Ulverston by any chance?

AdaColeman · 19/11/2018 21:56

Thermal socks and thick soled boots.
A liberty bodice.
Two brushed flannel petticoats.
Mittens.
Thermal gel handwarmers.
A fur muff.
A hip flask filled with whiskey.
Thermal tights with feet.

WhyDidIEatThat · 19/11/2018 21:57

Nah, stall at the Bury St Edmunds Christmas Fayre 😀

Good shout on the hip flask! Chili chocolate liqueur 👌

Lots of layers and a thick shawl. Several pairs of socks, lined boots.

Stripyhoglets1 · 19/11/2018 23:50

Cheap stick on heat pads from pound shops. Wear on the clothing layer nearest to your skin - toasty warm all day!

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 20/11/2018 01:03

I thought Ulverston Dickensian too !

I'm a local so will be heading down.

giftsonthebrain · 20/11/2018 01:10

Plastic bags inside boots, still a thing in Canada, works well.

halfwitpicker · 20/11/2018 01:12

Wow, sounds fab!

SpamChaudFroid · 20/11/2018 09:12

Fleece lined tights/leggings? There was a stall last year that sold delicious toffee chocolate vodka that I bought as a gift but guzzled myself

WhyDidIEatThat · 20/11/2018 09:46

Mmm toffee chocolate vodka sounds like heaven!

I thought Beaumaris Victorian Christmas!

Lockheart · 20/11/2018 22:45

You need a long wool skirt (I got a Laura Ashley tartan one from a charity shop), some boots, a cardigan, and a cloak or shawl.

When i did Victorian Christmas I used to wear jeans and thermals under my skirt and boots because the castle was bloody cold.

I also made a huge wool cloak, but that may be expensive and time consuming.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 20/11/2018 22:48

Fingerless knitted gloves.

WhyDidIEatThat · 20/11/2018 22:52

Oh god thank you thank you for bumping the thread with more ideas, I’d almost forgotten- it all kicks off on Friday so still time to scour the charity shops for long skirts and shawls etc. Have lots of under armour coldgear to wear beneath whatever I find.

Hi BabyShark, I was only asking because I lend out some of my re-enactment long wool skirts to friends taking part. I'm hoping to get there too at the weekend.

zippyants · 24/11/2018 18:52

Try something a little more comfortable other than a corset (like Shaperwear ) although I may be too late lol?! Don't forget the black jewelery too (spelling!?) - very Victorian. I think it was the Witby Jet kind of stuff. And yep.......black shawl!!!!
