Acne on chin/mouth area help

Coldshoulders · 19/11/2018 15:09

So I'm 26 years old and I'm having problems with chin/mouth area spots. Never really had acne as a teenager skins always been quite clear, until recently. So when I'm due af I get a few spots around the chin area, which alot of people do so that's no big deal. Then it started to happen more frequently and now my chin/mouth area is constantly full of spots. I don't wear much make up especially when I'm having breakouts. I don't share my make up and regularly clean my makeup brushes weekly. I'm on duac cream from the doctors and have been for 3 months now. Does seem to help but also dries my skin out. I use this cream twice daily. I face steam once a week and use pure tea tree oil on my spots then apply the duac cream. These spots are usually under the skin and very painful, they pulse. When they do come to a head I try my best not to pop but I do which they are white heads. I try not to touch my face and keep my hands and nails clean. Anyways I feel I have literally tried everything from tcp to antiseptic cream to face washes and nothing seems to be working in fact they just seem to get worse! Now I'm finding it very embarrassing to go out the house (I don't wear makeup during breakouts so they are all red and on show for the world to see!) Has anyone else had this happen or have anything they can reccommend as it's making me feel very down and embarrassed and it's pretty depressing. Sorry to go on I'm just desperate for a solution. Thanks for anyone who has any advice it would be much appreciated x

I feel your pain OP, I'm in my 40's and get chin acne. I am yet to clear it, although when I cut out dairy my skin isn't so spotty. I will watch this thread ...

Do you have chin length hair which touches your face here?

And how often do you wash/change your pillow case?

These are my two causes of mouth spots.

nomilknosugarplease · 19/11/2018 15:25

Do you smoke? If I ever have a few cigarettes when I’ve had a drink I always wake up the next morning with spots all over my chin and around my mouth.

dontblameme · 19/11/2018 15:28

Also watching. I'm late 30s with the same problem that has got worse in the last year or so. Presume just hormones so riding it out. Tried Effaclar routine which didn't help.

FATEdestiny · 19/11/2018 15:31

My chin acne has got better as I have lost weight.

I cannot pinpoint the exact cause, could be eating less carbs, less saturated fats, more vegetables, less sugar, more water. Or maybe it is just physically being smaller, less sweaty/greasy, less hormones in my smaller blood stream. I don't know.

I've also noted an inverse relationship with my skin and the amount of products I use on it.

When I had a constant battle with chin acne (~ 10-20 white heads per day), I used loads more product - twice or 3 times daily face wash, daily moisturiser, night cream, occasional scrubs and peels, acnicide cream, sudocream, even things like TCP and antiseptic cream. As my skin has improved, I use less and less product on my skin and it's got better and better at the same time.

PoptartPoptart · 19/11/2018 15:42

Don’t they say that spots on the chin/mouth area are related to hormones?
Are you on a hormonal contraceptive op? Mine cleared up a lot when I was on the pill.
Maybe discuss it further with your doctor.

Coldshoulders · 19/11/2018 15:50

I wash my bedding weekly and try to wash my pillowcase every few days. And I wear my hair up in a pony away from my face. I do smoke but I have done for years and never thort that could be a problem although now I'm thinking about that, I would literally try anything to rid these little chin breeders! I have always been a size 8, no matter what I eat I never gain weight so not sure if that's connected. I suppose I could probably do with drinking more water. I try to keep my diet as healthy as I can eating home Cooked meals with plenty of veg and have a takeaway once a week if that. My skin doesn't feel greasy or oily always seemed to have just normal skin type. I might try to increase the amount of cleansing and cream I use though. It's literally just on my chin/around my mouth and can be so painful. Sometimes I use magnesium sulphate on the cystic ones to help draw them to the surface. Everytime I feel I'm getting them under control I wake up in the morning with more! Then I'm getting stressed because I have spots and feel like when I speak to people they are staring at the red swollen spots! I know everyone gets spots sometimes but this is ridiculous lol. I would try any home remedies if anyone has any tips. No makeup until I'm clear. And also not sure this is relevant but I brush my teeth twice a day and don't get any toothpaste or anything on my face. I haven't had any problems with my washing powder so I don't think that could be the problem (pillowcases) and thankyou to all that have commented it shows I'm not on my own. I feel like I look like a spotty teenager. I have even tried honey. Searched endlessly online and tbh my doctors don't really seem too bothered about it but I might book an appointment and see if there's anything else they can suggest. Oh n I also used charcoal face wash but since it's been getting worse I try not to use too much product on my face incase I irritate it n make it worse thankyou all xx

legolimb · 19/11/2018 15:56

Which pill do you take OP? The mini pill can make acne worse/or cause it in the first instance.

I have always had troublesome skin and when I had to quit my combined pill and start taking Cerazette my face, shoulders, back and chest were covered in spots within the first two weeks. I had to stop that one. it is a known side effect.

If the combined pill can you see if your GP will switch it to one which is able to help with acne. Dianette worked a treat for me - I have read that Yasmin is also good.

tickingthebox · 19/11/2018 15:57

my chin acne was caused by my foundation.

I hadn't clocked it, but changed to a new foundation (Laura Mercier) and it started happening a few months later. The LM consultant switched me to oil free, as I mentioned the spots (I'm thinking it may have been a known problem as she "spotted" it so easily Wink ) It slowed down massively - Switched back to clinique - it's stopped completely.

Coldshoulders · 19/11/2018 15:59

It's the combined pill u take for 30 days have a week break n then continue and tbh I had this chin problem before I started on this pill and it doesn't seem to of got worse with that it just seems to of continued if that makes any sense xx

I wear Clinque's Anti Blemish foundation and STILL have major breakouts ... I did try Mario Badescu acne products and it helped a little, the silver powder is good for drawing out crap from skin, I have very oily skin.

Ohyesiam · 19/11/2018 16:02

Go to a Chinese herbalist, they will clear your skin in a month. It’s like a miracle for acne.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 19/11/2018 16:03

Mine were caused by Rosacea. Dr gave me anti biotics

WhyAmISoCold · 19/11/2018 16:07

You need hot cloth cleansing and acid toning pads.

I get the same problem and always have done. I've also had duac from GP and all it did was bleach my bedding and towels. The pill never helped either.

It's not a cure as I still have red marks and can still wake up with the whiteheads, but I notice a difference when I get lazy and stop doing it.

Cleanse with micellar water
Hot cloth cleanse (hot cloth cleansing cream with a 'got cloth, muslin type cloth under hot water, put over face when cleanser on and clean off)
Salicylic acid toning pad (I use nip and fab extreme in the evening)
Then moisturise.

In the morning I just clean my face with nip and fab teenage skin pad then moisturize before putting make up on (I won't be seen without it).

Keeping on top of this routine helps keep spots at bay. If I start slacking, they return so it definitely does something even if it's not completely clear. The hot cloth cleanse step is really important.

Zimbabwebadgers · 19/11/2018 16:12

Have you been prescribed antibiotics? My skin was the same at the same age. I use to get terribly painful lumps and very pussy spots and it got to the point where I couldn't cover them with make up. I had a 3 month course of antibiotics plus a cream I had to apply twice a day. 10 years later my skin has never been as bad as then.

My skin has also been a lot clearer the past few years since I've been using Boots witch Hazel and charcoal face wash.

Coldshoulders · 20/11/2018 13:42

I'm gunna go back to the docs this week and see if they give me something different. Starting a new daily routine now wake up wash hands first, then wash face with charcoal exfoliating face wash and tea tree oil water and pay dry. Apply duac. Drink a cup of water. No makeup no touching face or spots. Gunna repeat this 4 times a day morning dinner tea and before bed. Keep my hair up away from face. Try not to get stressed. Face steam every 2 days with tea tree oil water and I will do this at night before I go bed. Gunna wash my pillow cases daily now aswell. Will let u all know how I get on thankyou all for suggestions and might try the Chinese herbalist who is near my son's school thankyou all once again xxx

Could it be perioral dermatitis, OP? I had this once all over my chin and up to my nose - it was horrible.

Do the spots pop easily and sort of crust over?

Muddytoes1 · 20/11/2018 14:33

I’m in my 30s OP and have had the same for a few years despite no probs as a teenager. Always hormonal and anything I tried would only help clear them up not stop them coming in the first place. I once even tried giving up all sugar for a couple of months - made absolutely no difference though I know it does for a lot of people. For me though make up doesn’t seem to make them worse but makes me feel a lot better as I have a load of scars now so I sort of just treat them as best I can and cover them up and try not to get too stressed about it. Hope you find a solution - loads of great suggestions on here to try. Good luck!

I was in exactly the same situation 2 weeks ago. Im 26 and my ance has come back to haunt me. Doctor gave me a cream to use which did absolutley nothing so i went back. He has now given me antibiotics called lymecycline. 56 days worth. Also gave me a gel called Differin to use every night before bed. Im on my second week and i already see a massive difference!

outnumbered77 · 20/11/2018 14:39

Could it be perioral dermatitis? I get that sometimes and have strangely discovered that treating it with an antifungal cream makes it disappear. Also found online recommendations for using a sulphur based soap.

Chickenfillets · 20/11/2018 14:40

My doctor also told me that wearing oil free make up will no cause any harm or make the acne worse and told me if wearing it makes me feel better than i should do so.
