Has anyone done a Ancestry DNA test??

Has anyone done a Ancestry DNA test?? How did it go? Did you get any answers in terms of relatives? Whether close and distant etc. Please tell me your experiences.

I am debating whether to do a test myself. One question - wondering if females can only trace the mother line and if males can only trace the father line, or whether the test links to all family no matter the gender?

Thank you x

@elderlyGardener - Not quite the same as it wasn't an official sperm donorship pregnancy, but very similar, as in my MIL had decided that she wanted a child to raise alone and chose to hide her pregnancy from his biological father. She admitted there was no sinister reason - she just wanted a baby without anyone else's involvement. All we had was the location of his conception (which was a huge city) but not even a first name. Ancestry DNA and many months of genealogical research resulted in me finding his dad. As well as the wonderfully positive (maybe not that common) reaction from him and his whole family, unfortunately there have been significant (potentially hereditary) health issues that have come to light that DH now knows he has to have regular checkups for, that he would otherwise not have thought were necessary.

Just got results back for my dads dna test. It's picked up very close matches for two of my cousins, and loads of possible cousins. Was expecting a couple of siblings we didn't know about!
And was expecting some Spanish or Italian but there's zero!

You might be able to upload the file to another genealogy site and get different results. I got an unexpected part italian result from myheritage which I wasn't on ancestry but then that begs the question "how reliable are they?"

I’m sort of bumping this as my ancestry dna test has come back & im not sure it’s particularly accurate.

It says I have ancestors in the Middle East (I have) but dates them only as far back as gparents whereas I know ggpraents were there, & likely gggparents.

So now taking all with a pinch of salt unless someone can help explain. NC with lots of relatives so not uploading info.

I'd be worried about the privacy aspect. I realise they all have privacy policies, but those are never set in stone, as illustrated by Facebook et al. If you get an email in 5 years (probably into your spam folder) from the testing company saying "we're updating our privacy policy" followed by an 8-page pdf of legal jargon, are you really going to go through it with a fine toothed comb to make sure your data is still protected?

GrimDamnFanjo · 29/01/2019 16:26

@WhitherShallIWander if that was an autosomal dna test then you only get more recent dna information. Mtdna and ydna are the tests which track back thousands of years...

I did the 23&me one and found it interesting. DP has a different ethnic ancestry to mine he comes from a small Mediterranean region and it was 100% accurate in identifying his origin, as well as correctly identifying a cousin of his whom he already knows and who was also in the database. I did the diseases bit too and it didn't find anything, which was reassuring on one level but of course it is no guarantee you won't get those diseases!

I’ll take a look

Thanks GrimDamnFanjo

Apologies if this has been asked.

Do you get access to the site when you buy a kit or do you then have to pay to access the site and see your relations?

Thanks

Do you have to put in your real name, or can you use a pseudonym?
