Is Marsala similar to port?

CakeNinja · 17/11/2018 16:36

Making a tiramisu and haven’t got enough Marsala so have topped it up with port. Smells similar, is it going to taste all wrong?!
To me, it tastes good in the mixture, will there be some very embarrassed faces sat round table at dinner tomorrow

Tawny port or ruby??

wowfudge · 17/11/2018 16:39

Did you taste it? Depends what kind of port and how much marsala you had, but it'll probably be fine. Sweet sherry or dessert wine would be fine.

CakeNinja · 17/11/2018 16:45

It doesn’t say ruby or tawny! It’s just this one Grin
I didn’t taste is but I did smell it...

Oh it’ll probably be fine!

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 17/11/2018 17:01

Wow, that's going to be some high end dessert. Current price for that particular port is about £130 a bottle.

MrsTerryPratcett · 17/11/2018 17:01

Booze is all good Grin

Sherry would probably have been alright (it's basically posh trifle).

HarrietKettleWasHere · 17/11/2018 17:02

When I say ‘fine’ I mean

What the Hell other delights have you got planned for your guests if you’ve put such lovely expensive vintage port in the pudding?

Grin
CakeNinja · 17/11/2018 17:22

Oh!!! I think dp must have got it for his 40th last year, he doesn’t really drink port so we use it for cooking Grin
We are just having some friends round to say thank you for doing us a favour, you should see the size of the beef joint in our fridge - it’s like the one we get for Christmas to serve 20 Grin

CakeNinja · 17/11/2018 17:23

Just googled it, you’re right - it is an expensive bottle of port Shock

You'll be in trouble 😂 We have some vintage port here and I'm not allowed to touch it to cook with.

Yesitwasmethistime · 17/11/2018 17:28

OMG make sure one of your guests for dinner didn’t give DH the port!

If they did, do NOT mention the oh ran out of marsala so used that horrible port anecdote!!

Yesitwasmethistime · 17/11/2018 17:29

Anyone in our house that used vintage port for cooking would be in the doghouse for a long time btw.

CakeNinja · 17/11/2018 17:32

No neither of them gave dp the port Grin
He honestly won’t care, promise!!
I seem to remember him having to strain it or something and then saying because it was old it was probably ruined if it wasn’t drunk quickly (this was now over a year ago and he hasn’t had more than one glass)... this is how little we drink port.
It has been used in cooking though.
I reckon it’s going to be a banging tiramisu Grin

I've just shown DH this thread and he is currently weeping in the corner.

You use.... that port.... for .... cooking????

CakeNinja · 17/11/2018 17:44

Oh dear, people seem a little upset about the port abuse 🙈
Sorry guys, but I’m glad my pudding will taste okay!

OP posts:
Bufferingkisses · 18/11/2018 01:58

Dp says he'll drive over and replace what's left with marsala if you'd like? Grin

CakeNinja · 18/11/2018 07:35

Sadly it’s a bit late now otherwise that would have been a handy swap!
The tiramisu is sitting ready in the fridge now. Cannot wait, it’s my all time favourite pudding when done well but so disappointing when you order one and it’s crap. Fingers crossed I haven’t bloody ruined it sticking port in...

Raglansleeve · 18/11/2018 07:51

CakeNinja, if it doesn’t taste right just get the rest of the port out and pass it round - no-one will care about the tiramisu!

Oddly, I was having to check the same thing yesterday - couldn’t find a bottle of Marsala anywhere (we were going to have pork saltimbocca for supper) and the general consensus online seems to be you can substitute sherry or port but nothing tastes quite like marsala. So we had pasta instead!

LittleBearPad · 18/11/2018 08:01

Maybe if you’re having a big dinner for friends have the port after dinner. Some of your friends might appreciate it

CakeNinja · 18/11/2018 08:56

Yes, maybe I’ll aim to get everyone smashed and no one will notice my faux pas. I told dp I slugged the port in, he said “good thinking batman” - is most definitely not arsed about the port. Besides, I have read time and time again that you should only cook with alcohol you would drink, not really hideous cheap stuff so... Grin

As a side, it’s not a big fancy dinner, they’re our best friends and would think we’d lost our minds if we were having a ‘dinner party’ - they are coming later with their dog, we are all going out for a walk and a stop off at a pub somewhere and then coming back here for a roast and a blinding pudding!

I think we used the Marsala last when we had saltimbocca Raglan - One of our favourites!

AnnaMagnani · 18/11/2018 11:04

Well, you can tell your friends you are serving the world's most expensive tiramisu Smile

CakeNinja · 18/11/2018 20:55

Well the tiramisu was a success Grin
I offered everyone a glass of port to go with it but they declined.
The guests didn’t guess that I’d done a bodge job of it, and if they did, they didn’t say!

Yes yes yes, yes I did! Dp maintains it needs chucking because it was corked and needed drinking quickly because he sieved it or some such nonsense. Neither of us know anything about bloody port but it tasted fine in a pudding 😋

OP posts:
AnnaMagnani · 18/11/2018 21:31

Sieved! Can neither of you google?

It needed decanting of the sediment normal for a highly desirable vintage port.

Fucking corked indeed. Heathens.
