Very boring but how many plug sockets?

Getting fitted shelves in our alcoves & redecorating. How many plug sockets do I need where the TV is? We have the wi-fi box, phone, TV, playstation, sky box & apple tv there currently with an extension lead

Shitloads.

I think I've got three double sockets around where the TV and games consoles are and it's still not enough for the amount of electrical crap that congregates.

You'll get two pages of people slamming you for having a TV and console and sky box now and how you should just stare at a lump of wood in a morally enriching manner.

redsummershoes · 16/11/2018 12:33

what you need now & double it!
and have them at places where you can get to easily (so not at the back of a 2ft deep bottom shelf) and where they don't stick out (ugly & bump hazard)

Brilliant 🤣🤣 I only know how to work the TV & Sky!
Thank you.

As many as you can squeeze in, much better than extension leads!

madnessIsay · 16/11/2018 12:34

I’ve learnt can never have enough. Redid DCs bedroom & thought 6 (3 doubles) was enough, nope!

Good point re height.

And I need a special one for the Christmas tree lights!

Always double what you think

I had double in my kitchen and was laughed at - but I have only one or two spare sockets

ReverseTheFerret · 16/11/2018 12:36

Worth getting some with the USB ports as well so you don't need to have phone chargers taking up socket space to charge devices.

BiddyPop · 16/11/2018 12:37

If you can, I would put 2 double sockets on 1 side for the appliances, and 2 on the other for the phone, wifi, and to allow a spare for future appliances or a small lamp or Christmas lights etc.

Basically, I would put at least as many plugs as you currently use, so everything plugs into the wall, (most of which don't need to be terribly accessible as will probably be rarely touched), and preferably have at least 1 spare plug for future use (that is accessible and that could take an extension cable if necessary, but preferably have 2 spare plugs straight to the wall).

madnessIsay · 16/11/2018 12:38

just peaked behind the tv & 8 things are plugged in, wtf is behind there!

OP posts:
Earslaps · 16/11/2018 12:41

About a hundred?
We have only a double socket behind there and then an eight way adapter plugged into one of them and I think every socket but one is taken router, phone, tv, Blu-ray player, PS4, Virgin box, powerline adapter, sound bar.

No matter how many you put, you'll need more.

Depending on your life, a life-changer is to get a shedload of 1m 4-way extension leads (individually switched, if you like) and plug those into the wall sockets so they can be pulled out for hoovering, etc.

DGRossetti · 16/11/2018 13:08

Oh, and you can save some space if you fit plugs with USB-chargers built in ...

YetAnotherUser · 16/11/2018 13:13

If you're really hardcore, get some Ethernet ports wired in at the same time if the extent of the redecorating allows it. I have 4 behind my TV area and it's awesome, no crappy WiFi issues when streaming!

Jackshouse · 16/11/2018 13:15

At least a double in every corner of every room.

madnessIsay · 16/11/2018 13:24

some great ideas, have defo will do the USB thing.

madnessIsay · 16/11/2018 13:25

The more the merrier. One of the most annoying things about our house is that there just aren't enough plug sockets. 1 double socket in each room, in completely the wrong places, and none at all in the passage or on the landing. We have extension cables all over the place. The only exception is the kitchen where there are 3 double sockets plus a point for the washer and another one for the cooker.

Ideally, I'd say you need at least 3 double sockets in each room plus a phone socket downstairs for the Wi-Fi router and modem. USB ports are also a good idea - much safer than the charger plugs because they don't overheat.

Oldraver · 16/11/2018 13:51

I was going to say whatever you put in make sure they have USB points as that doubles what you can use, though if for tv and periphals maybe wont be as usuable.

You can now get USB Christmas tree lights

IncomingCannonFire · 16/11/2018 14:07

About 100 sockets in the TV corner then at least a double in the other corners. We had our house rewired when we moved in and the electrician kept complaining how he had never installed as many sockets. We still don't have enough.

FreeButtonBee · 16/11/2018 14:07

Behind my build in TV alcove shelves I have 4 doubles. That's just about enough. In my double reception, I have 14 double points in total. Probably could have done with a few more...

madnessIsay · 16/11/2018 14:18

yes electricians can be weird like that

Sad

When we moved in, (well, before we moved in) the heating was completely renewed, and every room had the floorboards up. We were on a very tight budget, and I couldn't justify the spend on CAT5ing the place up. A source of deep regret ....

BollocksToBrexit · 16/11/2018 16:20

We had 6 sockets, an aerial outlet and an internet outlet put in when we had our living room done recently. Should have had more sockets as we've already run out.
