Best gift for a newborn?

What was the best gift you have bought/received for a newborn?

He's a second baby so they have all the essentials - so I'm looking for something which is either unique or really useful but you wouldn't necessarily buy yourself, maybe. I already have a cute toy elephant... Budget is probably between £20 - £40 but it's not too strict.

Any ideas?

Everyone will jump on and say Muslim's but I thought they were awful and didn't absorb anything.

Assuming they've kept clothes and bigger items from the first baby, I'd buy something a bit more luxurious.

DD2 was given some super soft vests from boden, iirc they were about £10 each and were lovely and soft and snuggly.

Jellycat do some sweet little bunnies that are suitable from birth. Both my DC still sleep with theirs now at 2&5.

auberbene · 16/11/2018 12:09

I would actually buy vests and sleep suits for 3-6m and 6-9m.

We were inundated with newborn and 0-3m stuff and she didn't get round to wearing some of it - such a waste!

Maybe a little coat now it's getting colder?

Hubblebubbletripletrouble · 16/11/2018 12:10

Yes the elephant I've bought is a jellycat one! Very soft.

Yes they have clothes and other essentials. I'll look at soft vests - I guess I know they'll grow out of them so quickly I'm not sure if it's worth it to buy nice clothes!

I wouldn't bother with snazzy outfits. We were bought loads of beautiful dresses for DD which we never got round to putting on.

Just on a side note, I'd actually buy something for the mum too. Nothing too extravagant, maybe a comfy pair of pyjamas. She'll thank you!

Livinglavidal0ca · 16/11/2018 12:18

I bought vests and sleepsuits for my friend, and calpol, infacol and baby bonjela. All the things I needed desperately in the middle of the night and did not have.

Livinglavidal0ca · 16/11/2018 12:18

Oh and some nice shower gel and bubble bath!

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 16/11/2018 12:21

Get them a mothercare voucher then if they find they need something they can get it.

loveshinealight · 16/11/2018 12:26

What about things like a sleeping bag and cheeky chomper bibs?

ToastyFingers · 16/11/2018 12:30

Oh, actually I'd have loved some pyjamas for me! All my pre-baby ones were too small to be comfy and felt so gross in the saggy maternity ones.

Bodum do a great travel press for ground coffee or loose tea, it keeps drinks hot for ages and is spill proof so great for having a cuppa with babies and toddlers around.
Jellycat toys are so lovely. They're my go-to for new baby gifts now.

Winterfellismyhome · 16/11/2018 12:32

The blankets from Fred and Noah. So soft

Zimbabwebadgers · 16/11/2018 12:35

The best thing I received was an electronic thermometer but a second time parent will probably have one.

I'm expecting my second. A few older aged clothes (3-6 months/6-9) in the correct season would be handy (I have a summer born already and expecting a December baby so even if they're the same sex some of dd1s clothes won't be able to be reused as they won't fit in the correct season). Teething toys would be good too as dd demolished some of hers so not really fit to be passed down.

ChristmasAccountant · 16/11/2018 12:36

A hand knitted or crocheted blanket. Not necessarily by you - I’ve seen a few advertise locally to us on Facebook and the like. Just seems a bit more personal.

I would say not clothes, you end up with loads that don’t always get worn.

Plus something for mum - I would have loved some nice chocolates and a thermal cup for my forever-going-cold tea!

Narya · 16/11/2018 12:36

A nice soft hooded baby towel - we got given a couple of lovely ones and they've been so useful.

HermioneWaslib · 16/11/2018 12:39

I think booties with drawstrings are a good present for a second baby as 1) they get lots after first baby and 2) second babies tend to be carried in the sling a lot.

Kintan · 16/11/2018 12:41

Someone got us a Tuppence and Crumble star wrap - it was the perfect gift for a winter baby :)

PainSnail · 16/11/2018 12:42

Starsnug! Definitely the most useful baby gift I received

ivebeenwaitinginthedarkness · 16/11/2018 12:47

The hooded towel suggestions a good one .. you can get them personalised.

I appreciated a nice blanket I was given from next.

A nice wooden toy something like. It's hard as you feel you should buy something for now.

Also buy a little something for the older one like a sticker book / colouring book/ pencils / story book.

Not a bloody money bank that’s for sure!

Some really nice clothes from Joules or Boden. Their baby stuff is gorgeous.

user1498549192 · 16/11/2018 12:53

How about a nice children's book? We were given "I love you, little monster" which is lovely, and always makes me cry (in a good way!)

cleanhousewastedlife · 16/11/2018 12:56

I second books. An absolute classic children's book that can go on the shelf. You can write a message in and the date, and it will be kept and enjoyed for years. Plus you get the joy of going to choose it!

blackcat86 · 16/11/2018 12:58

I got a moo goo gift set from my brother that had bits for me (nipple balm etc) and a big bottle of bath stuff for newborns. She's 3 months and we've just it everyday. It's only just run out. I also had a nappy bouquet full of socks. We've used every set.

SuperstarDJ · 16/11/2018 13:01

I reveived this personalised picture for my first child which I hung in their bedroom. Going to get the same for soon to arrive DC2.

Though it depends if you/they think that type of thing is a load of twee shite or not Grin

One of my friends got buggy organiser which is definitely on my Xmas list. It means she can pop a water bottle, snacks and coffee on the buggy.

TwittleBee · 16/11/2018 13:10

A nice flask and nice PJs for the mum be lovely gift. I was so so so grateful when my Nan showed up with 2 lovely PJ sets for me! All I wanted was something comfy to wear and easy to BF in and they were perfect. Wish I got myself a flask to drink from sooner, waited too long before I got round to buying one. No more cold tea or coffee!

As for baby, we really appreciated my sister's gift of a load of flat sheets for the crib. They were perfect as we actually hadn't bought enough (thought two would be fine but oh no, DS was very sicky and liked to poonami every night). Also the sheets were so lovely and soft and great for laying out on the carpet / sofa / wherever for DS to lay on

Hubblebubbletripletrouble · 16/11/2018 13:14

With Pjs - how do you know what size to get? The mum is usually size 8 and hasn't put on much weight overall, though obviously her tummy will take a while to come down... What size would be comfortable?
