Best gift for a newborn?

What was the best gift you have bought/received for a newborn?

He's a second baby so they have all the essentials - so I'm looking for something which is either unique or really useful but you wouldn't necessarily buy yourself, maybe. I already have a cute toy elephant... Budget is probably between £20 - £40 but it's not too strict.

Any ideas?

@Hubblebubbletripletrouble

Mm, this could get awkward actually. I didn't think about the size thing. I was ginormous for months after giving birth and my weight was a very sensitive issue.

I would go bigger than what you think. If she was an 8 pre-baby, then it'd be pretty unlikely that she'd be an 8 post-baby straight away (unless she's very lucky Grin)

I'd go for a 12-14 and say something like 'oh, I thought they'd be nice and comfy for winter' 😊

(Just make sure they're very elasticated...)

Morrck blanket for the car seat

bourbonbiccy · 16/11/2018 13:32

My best mate bought us :- me a nice bunch of flowers and chocolate cake
She made up an essentials kit come 1st aid kit, but if this is their second child they might already have all this ( sudo crem, Calpol, cotton wool, baby bath stuff and E45 cream. There was more but can't remember now.
I always think new mums are swamped with clothes, comforters and teddies.

A follow my 1st year book, where you add photies and dates things happened -- I love mine it's great for remembering everything in years to come as I'm already forgetting things and he's only 15months.

A nice photo album - maybe personalise it

A nice little keepsake box with different compartments in

Other than that, it is very difficult as new mums get so much stuff. I'm sure she will appreciate anything you buy x

auberbene But if I buy 12-14 won’t they be useless after she loses the tummy? Argh! And don’t want to offend with two sizes too big!! I love nothing more than cosy PJs though so otherwise this is ideal!

TwittleBee · 16/11/2018 14:54

Hubblebubbletripletrouble just buy PJs that work in "S" "M" or "L" ? Get the medium size and in a style that are lose fit maybe? If you did want to consider PJs

SinkGirl · 16/11/2018 14:59

A lovely blanket as it can be used for so long - John Lewis have lovely ones.

Stephisaur · 16/11/2018 15:01

How about a snuggly dressing gown instead of PJs? No such thing as a too big dressing gown!

I agree with the hooded towel though. We hadn’t even thought of a towel for the baby (this is our first) but one of my friends bought one for us. As this is her second, a new one wouldn’t go amiss :)

auberbene · 16/11/2018 15:04

@Hubblebubbletripletrouble remember it's going to get colder too 😊

Big fluffy jammies are great. I just remember feeling so awful after I'd given birth, emotionally and physically. It would've been lovely to have received something that was just for me.

auberbene · 16/11/2018 15:05

Dressing gown is also a great shout! I have a big one that me and DD snuggle into Smile

mumofboysx3 · 16/11/2018 15:06

I've bought for my own kids and kids of close friends the royal mint baby set of uncirculated coins. Mine love theirs

vandrew4 · 16/11/2018 15:15

£40 in an envelope along with takeaway leaflets

TwittleBee · 16/11/2018 15:56

Omfg I want someone to do that for me during this pregnancy haha vandrew4

ZackPizzazz · 16/11/2018 16:01

A meal box delivery of meals they can throw straight from freezer to oven.

Almostthere15 · 16/11/2018 16:08

I think it's nice to get something for mum. They'll have loads of things for baby.
A lidded cup is so useful, maybe some nice biscuits?

JupiterDrops · 16/11/2018 16:09

Something for mum not the baby. Mainly food, cake, or offers to take the elder sibling out for a few hours i imagine could be much more appreciated than another comforter for a second baby!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 16/11/2018 16:11

My eldest DS was given a beautiful White Company cotton blanket by a good friend of ours when he was born. It still looks perfect to this day, despite being washed thousands of times in his fourteen years!

Hubblebubbletripletrouble · 16/11/2018 16:34

Yes I was thinking of making some flapjacks or something for her to munch on whilst breastfeeding etc

30birthdayholiday · 16/11/2018 16:38

A baby nail filer machine for the babies nails.
And sleepsuits with zips for when they go through that wriggly stage when changing, so maybe 6-9, or 9-12 months?

Water bottle with a straw so she can drink if she is lying down breastfeeding.

30birthdayholiday · 16/11/2018 16:39

Oh and sock-ons! Amazing invention!

ZazieQueneau · 16/11/2018 17:11

Jellycat toys.

Clothes for 6-9 months, 9-12 months as people get loads of newborn stuff and not much for later.

Saw a toweling robe with ears on the White Company site earlier today. It was £28. It looked brilliant. I was actually disappointed not to have an excuse to buy as no-one in my circle is expecting/has a newborn.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 16/11/2018 18:02

If they are PJs make sure they are breastfeeding friendly! Seraphine does some black bamboo ones that are expensive but amazing if you went in with a friend - or anything that opens at the front is fine.

JupiterDrops · 16/11/2018 19:40

Flapjacks are a great idea, anything with oats to help boost her supply. I'd have loved you if you were my friend and brought those round!

PirateWeasel · 16/11/2018 19:42

Frozen ready meals!! Literally the best gifts we got.

Violetroselily · 16/11/2018 21:03

I've bought these hooded towels from the white company which were very well received and I'm told the quality is excellent
