Who decided we need a window to see into Washing Machines...

...but not into dishwashers?

One of the best things about moving to the US is our top loading washing machine. It’s huge and takes half the time of my UK machine. I’m sure there is a ownside, but I haven’t spotted it yet although I suspect it is probably less energy efficient. You can just open the lid to see what’s happening, unless it is spinning.

chemenger · 15/11/2018 21:55

Obviously there are other, more profound, good things as well. Not just a washing machine, that would be sad.

sproutsandparsnips · 15/11/2018 22:00

Two things: don't all tumble dryers have windows?
And where might I find this 'door lock override'?

Eminybob · 15/11/2018 22:01

I think it’s because I can imaging the inside of a dishwasher looking pretty rank mid cycle. All that old food flying about. The dirt in a washing machine is less... lumpy

anniehm · 15/11/2018 22:04

The downside to top loading washing machines is they use twice as much water - we paid the extra for a front loader which also had a better energy rating - they were all far more expensive than the U.K. then

ThunderInMyHeart · 15/11/2018 22:06

Someone please answer about the door lock override!

BaronessBomburst · 15/11/2018 22:06

I have a washing machine with a door lock override too. It's manual, not electric so works in a power cut. DM's machine once died with all my work uniforms and most of my underwear in, and we were told it would take two days to get an engineer out. A manual override was first on the list when I bought my own machine!

My cheap beko condenser dryer doesn’t have a window. But I want to know now why dishwashers don’t have a window.

VelociraptorRex · 15/11/2018 22:07

DS (2.5) and I both love watching the washing machine go round, endless entertainment Blush yeah I don't want to see leftover ketchup and coffee dregs whizzing around the dishwasher though I have to admit...
my tumble drier doesn't have a window, in order to preserve the surprise until the last minute of how many socks it has eaten/melted/spirited to another dimension.

ItWasntMeItWasIm · 15/11/2018 22:12

@lucysmam ooh thanks! HB has just opened near us so will have a look!

ItWasntMeItWasIm · 15/11/2018 22:14

Re manual door lock over ride. My last machine you took the panel off at the bottom and pulled a bit of plastic.

llangennith · 15/11/2018 22:17

Why don't we have top loaders like USA and Australia?

Robbintime · 15/11/2018 22:22

I can see into my dishwasher.

The water in the sink as I wash yet another load of dirty dishes reflects my thousand yard stare as I ponder which life choices led me here

hdh747 · 15/11/2018 22:22

Being an old biddy who once used a single tub washer with a mangle on top, then a twin-tub, I was bloody thrilled with my first washing automatic washing machine with it's door window. Could watch that for ages when I first got it. Then, marvels, an oven with a glass door so I could watch cakes rise. Kettle's with see through bits so I can see how much water is in. And vacuum cleaners where you can see the dust being sucked up. Joy! Now I want a see through dishwasher cos I'm just totally nosey and like to see what's going on. And a tuble dryer, mine doesn't have a window. The way things are going I could spend all day watching appliances...

sdaisy26 · 15/11/2018 22:31

My washing machine not only has a door but lights up inside for the first couple of minutes of every wash. I don’t know why, but it entertained the dc no end as babies. It also has the bestest ever thing which is a pause button that lets you open the door mid-wash to fling in a missed dropped sock. Magic.

In my mind dishwashers look a lot yukkier inside whilst going. Also, my DH would then have even more opportunities to moan about how badly I’ve stacked it so I won’t be campaigning for dishwasher windows any time soon.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 15/11/2018 22:34

Someonenonce put a go pro in a dishwasher so you could see the cycle. It made me cross as it was a pretty cruddy old dishwasher and the water distribution wasn’t very even!

I need a life, and a dishwasher with a window in it! :o

TokyoSushi · 15/11/2018 22:34

I would love a window in my dishwasher! Why has nobody thought of this?!

ScrambledSmegs · 15/11/2018 22:36

I've always had Bosch machines and they always have/had door lock override mechanisms. There's usually a panel near the bottom of the machine where there's a little hose for draining the machine manually, and the filter. Mine is in there. Perfect if there's a power cut and you need to get your clothes out before they shrink to doll's size.

If you check the manual of your machine it might have the location of yours.

AutisticHedgehog · 15/11/2018 22:36

This will now annoy me forever.

Great question.

picklemepopcorn · 15/11/2018 22:46

Top loaders take up more space because you can't put a surface above them.

415wakeup · 15/11/2018 22:53

Never thought I'd be searching YouTube for dishwasher go pro HmmGrin

Jinglesplodge · 15/11/2018 22:57

I would absolutely pay more for a dishwasher with a window. It would be so satisfying to watch the dishes getting cleaner. It would be a bit gross during the day though, seeing the dirty things waiting to be washed. Perhaps a window and a curtain?! Grin

415wakeup · 15/11/2018 23:00

Well, that was worth it Grin

Both my US and U.K. washing machines have the tumble dryer stacked above them in a cupboard. The US tumble dryer is huge too.

BorisAndDoris · 16/11/2018 00:26

A glass door means my DS and I can put teddy in and watch him drown!
