Puncturing air tight meat packages in supermarkets. Did anyone else used to do this?

I know this is really odd, but when I was a young child and I'd go to the supermarket with my DM I had this thing where I'd stick my finger nails into the airtight packets of meat until they burst. I'd do it to all kinds of meat and sometimes sausages or fish as well. I found it really satisfying, kind of like when you pop bubble wrap.. Blush my DM never knew that I did this and would quite rightfully have hit the roof if she found out.

As an adult I'm horrified though. I mean I was making perfectly decent pieces of meat inediable. Some poor sod will have picked up those packets of meat, and when going to prepare a meal found them to be rancid.

Did anyond else ever do this? Is it a thing?

I’ve never seen the wallpaper done like that which is just as well I would definitely have poked it considering if I see a wet paint sign I have to just check.

Also don’t know what dewicking a bedspread means!

LuckyDiamond · 16/11/2018 00:13

I used to pick at the wood chip which was an issue as it was painted deep pink.

I also used to stare at it until it turned inside out.

We made our own entertainment in the 80s!

MadameFoner · 16/11/2018 01:14

Another wood chip picker here! Also did anyone have one of those little beaded purses? I used to pick the beads off with my teeth!

I just googled candlewick for a link to share. Amazed they're still being made! They all seem too luxurious compared to the old days - the rows of tufts are much closer together now.

that was an old one . Even that looks more luxey than the ones I remember from childhood. Not sure where I came across them, as my family didn't have them, but I distinctly remember the classic salmon pink ones from somewhere - probably seaside bnbs.

I like anaglypta wall paper. Hate flat, fresh plastered walls so paper my walls and ....shock...ceilings.

fantasmasgoria1 · 16/11/2018 05:54

We didn't puncture the wrappers but my brother used to slap large joint of meat when he was around 8!!!!

AnneWiddecombesHandbag · 16/11/2018 06:54

We used to slap meat and big bags of rice or pasta

Ah, the delights of a pre-internet childhood. Kids today, don't know they're born etc etc

TinyRick · 16/11/2018 07:05

Greensleeves is your brother Banksy? Grin

WhattodoWhattodo2 · 16/11/2018 07:09

I used to pop the unopened fuchsia flowers on my DGD's prize fuchsias.

TheWickedWitchofWestYorkshire · 16/11/2018 07:14

We still have the anaglypta wallpaper that was on our hallway walls when we moved in because we haven't been able to afford to redecorate. My children like to sit and pick at it and leave the bits all over the floor. I used to do it as a child too and did my mam's head in.

hmmwhatatodo · 16/11/2018 07:16

This thread is really making me laugh. I would love to see someone punch a cake in a supermarket. I also dug my nails into the swirly anaglypta wallpaper. We also had marble effect sticky back fake tiles that were for some reason stuck to real tiles that we had at the windowsills and I used to peel bits of it off til it looked so bad it all had to come off. I got hours of fun from that but got into big trouble. Also used to press crayons on the radiator till they dripped down.

CuppaSarah · 16/11/2018 07:20

I used to love poking the meat packaging. It's just not as good these days.

I also remember at three years old using a B&Q toilet to do a poo Blush I cried my heart out when I realised it wasn't going away when I flushed. My parents dragged us out very quickly I'm told.

Kemer2018 · 16/11/2018 07:20

Ugh that's horrible.
I used to swap price labels over so I'd pay less for things and weigh pick n mix get a label then fill the bag with extra.
Now, i take a pen knife shopping and chop off broccoli stalks. Why should i pay by weight for something i will bin?

FireworksAndSparklers · 16/11/2018 07:26

kemer why don't you eat the broccoli stalks? They're yummy!

Eminybob · 16/11/2018 07:32

I used to pull the feathers out of my feather pillow. I used to love finding the little spikey bits sticking out and the huge satisfaction when it was a big one.

maggienolia · 16/11/2018 07:52

Can I nominate this for Classics?
There are some mannequins in M&S Cambridge that are sticking two fingers up to passing shoppers.
That was my Dds.

Beaverhausen · 16/11/2018 07:57

Wow seems there are a lot of people around whose parents never taught them to respect things that did not belong to them.

Bluelonerose · 16/11/2018 08:05

I used to pick the bumpy wallpaper too.

My dm still has this in her hallway. I may still stick my nail in it Blush

Jaxtellerswife · 16/11/2018 08:29

@Beaverhausen or to just laugh at things from times gone past...
People posting aren't doing those things now

GrumpySausage · 16/11/2018 08:38

DSis and I once sharpened wax crayons and put the sharpenings on the radiator so they all dripped down and made lovely patterns we thought

I once left a bright orange wax crayon on the radiator in the bathroom. You can see where this is going. You could still see it down the back when we moved out 13 years later.

We also had the anaglypta wallpaper in the hall and I used to sit and pick it off when putting my shoes on.

I also carved my (very distinctive) name into the wooden living room windowsill. And then tried to deny it was me. I'm an only child.

HalfPintPixie · 16/11/2018 08:41

I don’t remember deliberately making holes, but I just got a rather visceral reminder of how extremely satisfying it was to squeeze the meat Blush

VisitorsEntrance · 16/11/2018 08:50

We had wood chip wallpaper. That all got picked off

VisitorsEntrance · 16/11/2018 08:53

Mmmmm candlewick bed spreads.

This is your nan’s bedroom in the 70s.
