Drivers.. How often do you...

BigBumandMumTum · 15/11/2018 15:11

Stall
Use the wrong gear
Misjudge getting into a parking space and have to line it up again
Accidentally cut someone up
Touch the kerb while parking.

Any other driving mistakes you can think of?

I stall maybe once a month if that, if I've misjudged the gear- none of the others for me except for sometimes lifting my clutch up too early and hearing that horrible gear noise!

ProfessorMoody · 15/11/2018 15:20

I can't say I've done any of these things for at least 20 years.

gamerchick · 15/11/2018 15:20

I regularly pull off on second gear by accident. I don't stall though surprisingly, no idea why.

I use my beepers to park, it takes as long as it takes. I probably would have scraped the car by now if it wasn't for the beepers Grin

I get cut up far more often then cutting someone up by accident. Apparently I'm invisible on roundabouts Hmm

Sirzy · 15/11/2018 15:22

Very rarely for them all.

The parking one is probably the most regular but that is never more than a case of “take two” and then doing it again

BigBumandMumTum · 15/11/2018 15:22

Ooh another one.

Having to have a couple of goes at parallel parking, not straight in

OP posts:
RiverTam · 15/11/2018 15:28

kerb for parking is the only one that's regular.

Perhaps you need some brush up lessons if you;re doing all that frequently?

SilverySurfer · 15/11/2018 15:35

I would suggest anyone who does all of those listed on a regular basis would benefit from booking some lessons, regardless of passing the test or not.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 15/11/2018 15:35

I don't really do any of those, but I've never parallel parked, so I'm probably horrific at it!

PiperPublickOccurrences · 15/11/2018 15:36

Never, ever stall or misjudge gears. Occasionally misjudge parallel parking because I do it so infrequently. Don't cut people up.

Have been driving almost 30 years though.

Shirleyphallus · 15/11/2018 15:37

I stalled last week on a hill at some traffic lights cos I didn’t realise I was in 3rd not 1st. Was so embarrassing.

Other than that, no to the others except the parking one. No parking sensors so I don’t always get it exactly right!

SprogletsMum · 15/11/2018 15:41

Stall Rarely, maybe once every 3 or 4 months and then because my car is crap
Use the wrong gear quite a lot, my gear box is old and cranky and often slips into 3rd instead of 1st
Misjudge getting into a parking space and have to line it up again- lots
Accidentally cut someone up -never
Touch the kerb while parking- enough that this is probably counted as part of my parking strategy

tabulahrasa · 15/11/2018 15:47

Stall depends what I’m driving, my own car, that I’ve had a while and am used to, not that often, but it’s also not years apart.

Wrong gear... I’m bad for driving away in second, I think because my car will, so I pay less attention, lol.

Parking space, most times I park tbh.

I rarely cut people up, as in I’ve accidentally done it a couple of times when I don’t know the road and it doesn’t do what I think it’s going to.

Touching the kerb while parking, never, I’m miles away, hence the going back out and in again, lol

BringOnTheScience · 15/11/2018 15:47

The occasional pull away in 2nd, but not the rest. Currently have DC1 doing lessons so supervising their driving too.

Ohyesiam · 15/11/2018 15:55

Parking is my nemesis, so only the parking ones, though I did stall today , while parking!
The thing I do is over rev.
I noticed I don’t do it while driving my partner’s big diesel, but in my nippy little car I do. I think my foot is in a less comfortable position for my heel to rest.

Notjustanyone · 15/11/2018 16:00

I drive an automatic & I have parking pilot so the car parks itself.
I always wait for an appropriate gap in traffic before pulling out.
I have parking cameras all over the car so use them whenever I get near a curb to avoid scratching my alloys.
I love my car as it's a doddle to drive and fun.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 15/11/2018 16:01

Stall: Hardly ever
Use the wrong gear: Hardly ever
Misjudge getting into a parking space and have to line it up again: Sometimes if I have to go in at an angle
Accidentally cut someone up: Don't think I've ever done that
Touch the kerb while parking: Quite frequently because parking outside my house is a nightmare and you have to tuck in really really close to the curb

CluedoAddict · 15/11/2018 16:01

None of them. Anyone driving over 6 months shouldn't be doing any of them.

JellySlice · 15/11/2018 16:04

Stall - frequently, but that's one reason we're replacing current car.
Use the wrong gear - frequently, and that's one reason why next car will be an automatic.
Misjudge getting into a parking space and have to line it up again - frequently, in this car, because it thinks it's a bus. Rarely, in previous cars.
Accidentally cut someone up - rarely, and only in roundabouts, because this car has a massive blind spot.
Touch the kerb while parking - frequently, in this car, because it thinks it's a bus. Rarely, in previous cars.

gamerchick · 15/11/2018 16:06

The sanctoarmy are out in force I see. "ooooo I would never do anything like that, how appalling, get some more lessons 'sniff'" Grin

I really want a shot of a car that parks itself Grin

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/11/2018 16:09

Oh all the time, except for stall and gears as I drive an automatic.
I'm absolutely rubbish at parking.

Saying that I was on a busy Motorway yesterday in hazardous conditions and was shocked at how bad, and dangerous some of the driving was.
I learned Motorway driving on the M8 through Glasgow so I'm good at it, other drivers, either not good, or just dickheads, and it was full on rain, spray, standing water etc.

randomsabreuse · 15/11/2018 16:16

Stall, every 2 days is going well having gone from turbo diesels to a petrol with limited torque. You have to really work to stall a diesel but our new car is quite prone to it at manoeuvring speeds where there is any kind of camber...

Wrong gear, rarely, wish for 7th/8th, often! Have occasionally gone for the other car's reverse though...

Parking is either perfect or white, depending on audience. Probably once every couple of months on average but once I've screwed up once I might well do a couple in a row.

Cut people up not in as long as I can remember.

Touch kerb accidentally while parking very rarely - couple of years.

TooTrueToBeGood · 15/11/2018 16:16

Rarely for all of them too but I've been driving for a very long time. Other than cutting someone up, none of them are dangerous so don't beat yourself up.
Parking and stalling can easily be much improved with a bit of practice. Take yourself somewhere quiet of an evening where you can work on them without any pressure. I helped all my kids learn to drive and one of my standard things early on was to take them to a quiet, safe hill and get them to practice their clutch control. It only took 2 or 3 sessions of that to cure them of any stalling issues.

RiverTam · 15/11/2018 16:26

I really don't care if being Hmm at drivers who regularly cut other drivers up is sanctimonious, it's just outright shit driving and potentially very dangerous. Why is being a bad driver something to be proud about or shrug off?

gamerchick · 15/11/2018 16:37

This thread is an epidemic of cutting people up is it? You didn't just focus on that did you. Hmm right back at you.

I also was being general in my post, not singling anyone out.

Ffsnosexallowed · 15/11/2018 16:39

Rarely do any of those - but today I didn't look properly when coming out of a junction and someone coming along the road managed to brake on time thank God. I just want paying attention.
