Does your place of work offer car parking?

Got me thinking due to a huge parking drama at work these last few days.

We have a main car park & all bays are for managers only. We then have an overflow car park that fits 35 cars only we now have way more staff than it can fit hence me ending up leaving mine outside a shop & walking 25 minutes into work which actually i didnt mind in the morning but pain in the arse when i finished & got home 30 minutes or so later.

So does yours? Should it if not?
Not

I have parking but it's the first employer I've ever worked for, in over 20 years of work, that offered car parking. And I have to pay for it.

PetuliaBlavatsky · 15/11/2018 07:00

I've only worked in one place that had a car park in 25+ years of working. It'd be nice but I don't expect it. The first place I worked (as a graduate), the only parking available was in a multi story car park, cost a fortune.

FaithInfinity · 15/11/2018 07:01

There is car parking at my work (hospital) but there are less spaces than demand. We pay for the car parking...apparently we pay for access to the car park, not for a guaranteed space. There is an inspector who gives out tickets if we park ‘inappropriately’. If you are on a shift parking mid morning it is a nightmare.

DoveSecret · 15/11/2018 07:02

Yes. From 8am-6pm it works. The orther hours its for residents. Its been like that for years but sometimes the lazy bastards are still there so we just block them in. The sheepishly come to ask us to move but we let them wait. Signs are clearly there and they know the rules.

Authenticcelestialmusic · 15/11/2018 07:03

I pay for a space 5 minutes away and claim it back on expenses. I appreciate I am very lucky. My last job had a car park so free parking.

megletthesecond · 15/11/2018 07:04

Yes. Almost enough spaces that we have to book in advance. There's a bit of car sharing and working from home if we have a day with lots of external visitors. I walk though, 2 miles doesn't take long. Drive maybe twice a year. Cycle a bit in the summer.

I'd not be impressed about somewhere that let managers take priority over parking Angry. Every job is important.

Meet0nTheIedge · 15/11/2018 07:05

Yes, free and sufficient. I've never worked anywhere that doesn't in 25 years plus. I've never worked in a city or town centre though, always in industrial estates/factory type settings.

AuntMarch · 15/11/2018 07:06

Mine does but I know many don't. Most of my friends use public transport for work

AtiaoftheJulii · 15/11/2018 07:07

Yes, but I have to drive for my job.
If I had a job that was just in one office, I'd much rather use public transport.

OhTheRoses · 15/11/2018 07:08

Yes and I am very grateful. However where I work is v poorly connected to public transport and there is oodles of land hence plenty of parking. It is a marvellous perk.

DollyWilde · 15/11/2018 07:11

I work in the City - I think we have a car park but I don’t know any colleagues who have a car, let alone would drive through central London to get to work!

ScreamingValenta · 15/11/2018 07:19

It does, but there are far fewer spaces than people who want them and the waiting list is literally years long. (There is separate parking for those with a disability, who don't have to join a waiting list, which is one good thing).

Kernowgal · 15/11/2018 07:35

Yes, loads, but I'm rural and public transport to site doesn't start until long after the staff have started, and the local roads aren't safe to walk on. I wish I could walk to work - used to walk miles in London and really miss it.

dalmatianmad · 15/11/2018 07:37

Car parking for the hospital I work for is a 15 min walk and we all pay £25 a month to park there. I work lots of nights so can park onsite...

Allyg1185 · 15/11/2018 07:38

Yes free and plenty of spaces although has large potholes

Redyoyo · 15/11/2018 08:14

No i park in a carpark 5 mins away and it costs £10 a day, our other office in another city has free parking which is a bit shit as people doing the same job are really making £200/£250 a month more than me if you take this into account.

adaline · 15/11/2018 08:20

Yes, but only two spaces for nine employees. Luckily only three of us drive in (others walk or take public transport) and as we all work shifts we can normally get a space.

If not, my parents live nearby so I can park at theirs if necessary.

SnuggyBuggy · 15/11/2018 08:21

As an NHS worker this is a big problem. In car parks you often see people arriving early, eating cereal and doing their make up in the car to secure a space. I agree with Faith that it's impossible for anyone who starts midmorning.

Managers just whinge at us to cycle or use public transport. A lot of big hospitals are in a poor location for public transport, not near train stations and limited busses. The local residents complain if staff park on their streets and push for restrictions.

It's starting to affect recruitment as people unsurprisingly don't want to spend an hour getting two busses for a journey they could drive in 20 minutes.

Stephisaur · 15/11/2018 08:23

Yes, we have car parking.

There are 4 bays outside the very front, which are reserved for the MD, Director and myself (next senior member of staff).

There are then 3 spaces for visitors, and around 15 spaces for other staff.

If you got there earlier, would that increase your chances of getting a space?

Howhot · 15/11/2018 08:24

About 40 spaces and thats with everyone bunched up making as many spaces as we can) office has around 100 employees. It's a mess, a race to see who can get there first. Some people get there 90 minutes in advance to get a space. There is very little local parking. They are looking into alternatives.

DrudgeJedd · 15/11/2018 08:27

Yes and it's free but you do need a pass. Choice of about 8 car parks dotted around city centre. I work in a university.

Beingginger · 15/11/2018 08:28

Yes and it’s free, the car park has about 1500 spaces so loads of parking. The general public can only park for 2 hours but staff get free permits to go over that time.

MeteorMedow · 15/11/2018 08:30

I’ve worked in two places that had ample staff parking (one a shopping outlet and the other a hotel- both in my teens)

As an adult I’ve never worked in an office with ample parking. Worked in one for years where there were 50 spaces to 400 employees over half of whom drove (caused so many arguments). My last and my current job, both city centre multi storeys which charge £9 per day 🤔😒

I luckily get a lift in and live close but DP and I have already agreed that if we move house and I had to drive/Park I would need to pay rise to stay in my role

SocksRock · 15/11/2018 08:32

Yes, but I'm classed as an essential car user, meaning I have to frequently go out during the day to visit sites. It's free but still a 15min walk from the office. I live 25 miles away though, so better than nothing and a lot cheaper than any alternative!

I also quite like the walk as headspace time as the job is quite full on.

VenusInSpurs · 15/11/2018 08:33

No.
Everyone cycles or takes public transport.
