Does your place of work offer car parking?

Got me thinking due to a huge parking drama at work these last few days.

We have a main car park & all bays are for managers only. We then have an overflow car park that fits 35 cars only we now have way more staff than it can fit hence me ending up leaving mine outside a shop & walking 25 minutes into work which actually i didnt mind in the morning but pain in the arse when i finished & got home 30 minutes or so later.

So does yours? Should it if not?
Not

Just remembered one of my jobs the office moved from zone 2 (so surburban but not that far out) to a building right in the centre. Car parking was for blue badge holders only. So many people complained that they couldn't drive and park for free, despite the office being basically in a mainline terminus station Hmm

festivellama · 15/11/2018 14:36

There is a small car park where I work, and only about a half dozen of us. If the spaces are full, whoever is last just parks behind the others and blocks them in, and moving it if they need to leave first.

OrcinusOrca · 15/11/2018 14:58

No. Some people can pay for parking but when I joined they had run out of spaces so I have to find somewhere on a nearby road, Hope my car doesn't get keyed and walk in.

onceandneveragain · 15/11/2018 16:35

yes, loads of it, and free, but again, although on the outskirts of a city, transport links are awful so it is necessary.

Have had free parking in pretty much all of my 'office' based jobs apart from one where it was about £20 p/m and five minute walk.

Work are currently considering the possibility of moving us to a central hub in the middle of the city, in which case there will be no parking. If this happens most people will use public transport to get in but a lot will leave as they commute so far driving is the only practical option and it will set them back £££.

Athena51 · 15/11/2018 16:50

Free parking but not enough spaces for all so you request spaces (you can do it a week or two at a time) via the intranet and they are randomly allocated every day.

I get a space most days, especially as people frequently free up spaces on the system and I am a whizz at checking and nabbing one and I can work at home also so I rarely have to pay for parking. They've made it about as fair as they can

OliviaStabler · 15/11/2018 18:03

Yes but we are in central London so they aren't in high demand. The spaces are for visitors, the chauffer's who ferry the board members around, the pool cars and the occasional member of staff who has to come into the office then drive to somewhere and it is best to drive there drive home than get public transport.

No one would use it personally as they'd have to pay the congestion charge themselves and public transport is quicker and, in some cases, cheaper then owning and running a car.

ThreeGlasses · 15/11/2018 18:23

Parking is all anyone can talk about at our hospital atm. 1 space for every 5 members of staff. They’ve introduced a points based permit system, if you don’t get a permit you can’t park. All higher bands automatically get one. Then it goes on cross site working etc etc etc. We don’t find out until the end of this month if we’ve got one and so many people are threatening to leave

iLoveFoood · 15/11/2018 18:23

Yes free parking all day

SayKnockKnock · 15/11/2018 19:13

I work in a city centre police station working shifts and have to park a 20min walk away or get the bus (due to the shifts buses aren't always an option) we do have a small car park for senior managers who never deal with angry people and work 9 to 5 with a perfectly good bus service right to the door

Numerous times I've been on the bus home at the same time as someone I've been dealing with during my shift who has been released, occasionally it's someone who's made threats or is just an aggressive individual arsehole
I just have to hope they get off the bus before me or I have to alter my route home to make sure they don't see where I live.

It's ridiculous but nothing will change until something happens it will need to be a murder as stalking/threats/damage to vehicles don't count

Groovee · 15/11/2018 19:14

Yes it does but staff can never get in due to parents dropping off to breakfast club despite numerous requests not to park there.

Kezzie200 · 15/11/2018 19:15

Yes, we moved offices to enable staff and clients to park. Essential in Cornwall in summer.

RavenLG · 15/11/2018 19:16

I don’t drive but it’s £20 a month and you’re not actually guaranteed a spot Hmm sometimes being a bus wanker isn’t too bad

ProfYaffle · 15/11/2018 19:17

Nope. I work in a city centre location. Not one parking space to be had by anyone. tbh though I wouldn't want to drive in anyway because traffic is awful. I get the train and much prefer it but it's expensive.

KirstyJC · 15/11/2018 19:19

Yes, rural community hospital with large car park. All essential car users get free permits and there is always a space. Last place I worked we had to pay £25 per month to park though

Nacreous · 15/11/2018 19:21

Old work - free parking eith enough space for everyone who was in the office on a given day about 90% of the tume, assuming people parked on another in.

New job: plenty of parking but charge £3 a day.

bengalcat · 15/11/2018 19:23

Yes . Work in a hospital but unless arrive early no guarantee of a space - parking charges @£1000 a year .

ForalltheSaints · 15/11/2018 19:23

No- it is in central London. For those outside London, perhaps there should be incentives for car sharing, or disincentives for not doing so.

beela · 15/11/2018 19:26

No. Well, that's not strictly true. I have a car park pass for a city centre car park as part of my job. They've done a car parking review and I no longer qualify for it (fair enough, my role has changed). But I can buy it back, at £50 per month. So that's a £600pa pay cut then Sad

I'd happily take public transport but we live in a little village so it would be a long and complicated journey with multiple changes, versus 20 minutes in the car.

greendale17 · 15/11/2018 19:27

Yes mine does, free and plenty of it

snarferson · 15/11/2018 19:28

Yes. Free and on a first come, first served basis. It's full by 8.30am. Working parents doing the school run have no chance.

Strawberrybelly · 15/11/2018 19:39

My work don't have a car park but there is a council run one around the corner that is free. If I'm in early I always get a space but the later I go in the harder it is.

TheWiseWomansFear · 15/11/2018 19:44

No. Everyone gets public transport or there is a v expensive car park or we can lock up bikes for free.

CoatedInSnow · 15/11/2018 19:51

DH currently has free parking, but where he works is on the outskirts i.e. lots of space and not really accessible by public transport.

His new job is City Centre with limited parking and there is a waiting list for parking spaces. 50 pm for a space outdoors and 150 pm for a space in the indoor garage.

Where I work has underground parking spaces for 100 pm but I prefer to go by train as I don't like driving. As far as I know there isn't a waiting list as it's very easy to get to via public transport so most people use that.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 15/11/2018 19:58

Yeah, all my jobs have had parking available.
