Copper coil

I wondered if anyone has any experience's with the copper coil they would like to share? I'm considering getting it fitted as I struggle with hormonal contraceptives and migraines. Did anyone gain weight on the copper coil? Does it hurt? Can you feel it when it's in there? And does you partner feel it during sex? Thanks :)

Not me, but my DD2 (24) has the copper coil and say it's fab. Hormonal contraception made her very unwell..migraines and awful mood swings but the copper coil works . The only downside has been heavier periods. No weight gain and I'm assuming her sex life is fine !

meow1989 · 11/11/2018 21:53

I've used the copper coil as contraception since I was 17. I always have the 5 year one as I had 10 year for a year and it gave me long periods.
DH mentioned being able to feel the strings when I very first had one but not since (they soften and go up behind your cervix.
Having one put in is zero fun but once it's done it's done. With the 5 year, my periods are regular and last 4-5 days.
I'm not aware of any correlation with weight gain at all - I have gained weight, but that's due to the amount I eat Grin

meow1989 · 11/11/2018 21:54

Also no, you shouldn't feel it when it's in. Although you should be able to self check the strings

Chesneyhawkes1 · 11/11/2018 21:56

I've had mine since March. No weight gain, my OH said at first he could feel it but not anymore. Longer, heavier periods but nothing too bad. Getting it put in wasn't the best but over quickly. I've got a 10 year one. I've tried the pill, mini pill and depo previously. The copper coil is the best by far for me.

FennyBridges · 11/11/2018 21:57

I highly recommend. It's brilliant.

My periods are generally heavier I think. And I'm anaemic. Aside from that, it's the best form of contraception I've ever had (I'm in my 40s)

IckleWicklePumperNickle · 11/11/2018 22:02

I had my first at 23 before our first child. Had one put in few weeks after birth again, had it replaced 2x as was only 5y ones. Then had 2nd child and had a 10y one put in. St first DH can feel the strings, but after a while fine. My periods are shorter as years gone by. I get the odd heavy cycle. I can't do hormone contraception, I've tried them all. I gained weight from having children.

Emma765 · 11/11/2018 22:06

I had one, had awful awful period pains, unbearable, and bleeding so heavy my hair fell out. They went from around 4 days to about 10 days too.

I hadn't had a baby and they reckon it's better if you have, but never ever again for me it was awful.

crushedstrawberries · 11/11/2018 22:08

I had one in for 6 months and my periods were horrendous. I'd bleed though a super+ tampon and pad in 3-4 hours. I had to have it taken out as the GP was concerned I'd become anemic for losing so much blood each month. It did seriously improve my period cramps though...

Ollivander84 · 11/11/2018 22:11

I'm on my third and will have number 4 next year. I love it, makes my periods a day longer so 7-8 days instead of 6
I had heavy periods anyway. No other effects

terfinginthevoid · 11/11/2018 22:13

Had them for thirty years. No problems ever.

happypotamus · 11/11/2018 22:17

I have had mine for about 3 months. Having it put in hurt for a few minutes but it wasn't unbearable. I reckoned it was not as bad as labour which was potentially the alternative! And there were unpleasant period pain type pain for a couple of days which was sorted with some paracetamol. I can't feel it and nor can DH. I don't think it has caused weight gain. If I have put on weight since having it, I would assume that is because I have been eating shit. I do have heavier periods now but I can cope with that. Overall it has been a positive experience so far.

pitterpatterrain · 11/11/2018 22:20

Much heavier periods, apart from that great!

Uummokay · 11/11/2018 22:20

I had the coil fitted. The first coil the nurse tried to put in was too big. It was quite painful to say the least. She took it out and started again with a smaller one. I was told I would have period style cramps afterwards and to wait in the waiting room for a little while before going home. I suspected this was a safety precaution incase I passed out from the pain , situation, adrenaline etc. I am good with pain so I totted off home. The pain was like intense period pains so I spent the evening in bed chucking down those big pink tablets. I think they are called cuprofen. After that I was pain free and enjoying the non medicated birth control. After a few weeks I started to notice that I smelt down there. It seemed to get increasingly worse. I carried on and tself medicated for Trush, VB etc. The smell got worse. I was getting really self conscious as I was convinced it was very noticeable so I asked my partner. He confirmed what I already knew, that yes, there was an odour. I booked in with the clinic and had it taken out. I was told "It just didn't agree with me". I wasn't told of that side effect so I carried on with it for a lot longer than I needed to.

My sister on the other hand has used the copper coil for years and has never had any issues.

Just thought it was worth sharing my experience as I wasn't aware that what happened to me was a side effect. It wasn't mentioned beforehand.

Moral of the story is if you get one and it starts ponging, don't hesitate to get it removed.

RunSweatLaughAndLatte · 11/11/2018 22:21

I've had the copper coil for 3.5 years and it's the best contraception I've ever used.

tiredmarshmallow · 11/11/2018 22:52

I had it put in 8 months ago, after the birth of my DD. It wasn't bad at all going in, never feel it during sex but my periods have been far heavier and more painful. The first three months I lost an item of clothing each time when I came on (once a light pair of jeans in a very busy airport, joy). I really rate it though and think the initial heavier periods are worth the convenience and lack of hormones.

My periods now are settling back down again. I was offered a hormonal drug to ease the bleeding at my check up but declined. But it's worth noting that help is there if you are one of the ones who get the much heavier periods.

UterusUterusGhali · 11/11/2018 23:39

I really like mine.

I do have heavy periods but tbh they were heavier before I had it put in.

I had the mirena before and that was awful. I really don't get on with hormonal contraception.

Sallystyle · 11/11/2018 23:49

I had one and I liked it. No hormones, no pain with putting it in. DH didn't feel it that I remember and my strings were quite short.

It also gave me my 9 year old daughter Grin. Sorry!

It was perfectly in place as well. That is very rare though, and can obviously happen with any type of contraception. I loved not having hormones in my body.

LastOneDancing · 11/11/2018 23:56

I've had mine a year.

Fitting - firstly difficult because appointments are like hens teeth, then Dr
found it impossible to get it past my iron willed cervix... Thankfully eventually got it done under GA as I was having a small op anyway.

My periods have been heavier but only for the first 2 days, and pretty regular.

I also noticed a coppery odour for the first couple of months - only when I was on my period though. Thankfully it stopped.

Overall, it's great. The pill sent me absolutely loopy, I'm so pleased to find something both fuss and hormone free.

PrimeraVez · 12/11/2018 06:20

I had mine put in 6 weeks after DC2 was born.

Was a bit uncomfortable for a few seconds but not painful (I guess because my cervix was still a bit open) As soon as I got off the bed, it was like nothing had ever happened, bar some light spotting for a few days.

DH says he can't feel anything.

I'm 3 months in to having it and haven't had my period yet (am EBF) so can't comment on that although my OB did warn me to expect my period to be heavier at first.

niceupthedance · 12/11/2018 06:29

I've had three with minimal problems except the last one gave me recurring BV so had to have it out

ChubbyMummy12 · 12/11/2018 10:39

Thanks ladies, I see it's mostly positive, I've always had fairly heavy periods anyway so that's not an issue, I think il make an appointment to have it fitted! Currently been on the implant for almost 3 years and I've been a hormonal mess and got such bad painful acne!

pitterpatterrain · 13/11/2018 17:00

Good luck!

Kracken · 13/11/2018 18:09

Just to add to the positive stories, I love my copper coil! On my second. My periods were heavier for the first year or so but then went back to normal. Just bliss not putting artificial hormones into my system.

Hope your fitting goes well.

GreenandBlueButterfly · 13/11/2018 19:28

I had one for about 5 years. That was 5 years too long. In that time, I had thrush every single month, my periods were really heavy and my thyroid got destroyed (this might be unrelated). I complained to the doctor lots of times and I was assured the thrush had nothing to do with it. Well, I've been free of thrush since the month it came off. That was 4 years ago and it was the best thing I did. I still can't believe I waited so long

Keepkondoing · 13/11/2018 19:39

I’ve got one after after having issues with all other hormonal contraceptive. I’d say it’s the best if a bad bunch, I do get heavy periods now and they are longer 7-8 days but not too painful. Since having it in I do feel as though I put on weight more easily but that could easily be more to do with getting older.
Like other getting it put in was not nice, like a horrible smear really. But over pretty quickly and only a few cramps later that day. I definitely needed to rest though, I don’t think I could have gone back to work after having it fitted. DH could feel it at first but it does soften up so no problems now.
