Iceland (the shop) What to buy?

With all the recent publicity, and the good moves they're making towards backing it up, I'd like to try my weekly shop there.
Would appreciate suggestions on what to buy there. Could it be done on a reasonable budget? Is it possible to eat healthy dinners using their food?
How about vegetarians? We have DC who aren't meat eaters, and DC who are.
Thank you Smile

Hash brown fries

bookmum08 · 11/11/2018 15:43

It's just a supermarket. It isn't just frozen food. I buy most of my food from there. It isn't the best for non food household items (bubble bath, loo cleaner etc) so I go to Wilkos for those.

greyspottedgoose · 11/11/2018 15:43

Hotdog crust pizza

birdsofafeather · 11/11/2018 15:47

4 hot and spicy chicken breast fillets

Singingtherapy · 11/11/2018 15:50

No bull burgers for the vegetarians. They're amazing!

TroysMammy · 11/11/2018 15:50

Kale bahjs from their street food section. Heck sausages, cheaper than other supermarkets.

ImNotAFlower · 11/11/2018 15:54

Hash Brown fries without a doubt!

maddiemookins16mum · 11/11/2018 16:04

Minted lamb burgers, their own brand pizzas are great (not the really cheapo ones) and their Christmas range is highly rated in Good Housekeeping. A very underrated supermarket (personally I blame Kerry Katona).

MartagonLilies · 11/11/2018 16:04

These all sound lovely, especially the hash brown fries & hot dog stuffed pizza and I'll definitely be picking some up Smile
Is it easy to pick up bits for healthy dinners too?

Frozen veg! Much more economic and indeed healthier in many cases. Peas for instance are frozen immediately in the field and lose no nutrients - ‘fresh’ peas have been a round for days and are rubbish nutritionally.

Anyone with problems chopping will find chopped onions etc useful (Jack Monroe has a whole long thread on twitter - she has arthritis)- and you can just use a handful for half an onions worth and not have half an onion in the fridge.

They did a whole load of really nice frozen bread with sourdough and croissants etc about a year ago - but my local one doesn’t have them any more - I’d be interested to know if they still do that.

Binglebong · 11/11/2018 16:19

Almond and honey granola. My favourite!

Very good frozen fruit. And their fresh white bloomer is excellent (in a brown paper bag- unsliced).

CurlsLDN · 11/11/2018 16:19

Iceland is next to Aldi where I live, so for a while I would pop between the two. I've given up on Iceland now though. I find it difficult to shop healthily there as although yes you can get frozen veg, the fresh fruit and veg is limited range and poor quality.
Amongst the 'prepared' frozen food I personally found it to be poorer quality that aldi/Lidl/Sainsbury's etc.

So in short I'd buy frozen veg, frozen cuts of meat and ice cream, but would go elsewhere for absolutely everything else.

PurpleDaisies · 11/11/2018 16:19

The Mumbai street food curry range (4 for £5) is great, especially the kale bhajis and aloo matar. That’s got lots of vegetarian/vegan options.

There’s a bag of quinoa and bean mix that’s a nice easy accompaniment to all sorts of stuff.

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 11/11/2018 16:20

Vienetta on a stick.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 11/11/2018 16:23

I really really like their stir fry chicken and prawn Paella .
Very nice , very filling and very quick and easy to do .

The £1 ice cream lollies , like Cornetto, are really good too and great value for money . You get 6 per box. As for the Italian triple chocolate, food of the Gods .

fatpatsthong · 11/11/2018 16:31

Their king prawns are good - £10 for 800g which I find not too bad at all (am the only prawn eater in the house so this lasts ages and prawns are HUGE).

Dh and dd2 love their mid range chicken nuggets. Dd1 liked their plain meat - she loves a pork chop and the frozen ones were ok. Frozen fruit and veg and ice cream as everyone says. Not keen on any of their other stuff really - did like the dahl in the street food section but that was about it.

BoringSoup · 11/11/2018 16:33

Kale bhajis?? Watching with interest.

flissfloss65 · 11/11/2018 16:41

I love their frozen pasta, chicken and spinach in creamy sauce.

hawleybits · 11/11/2018 16:53

Lemon and Mascarpone cheesecake, gorgeous!

formerbabe · 11/11/2018 17:03

The luxury range moussaka ready meal is absolutely delicious..

birdsofafeather · 11/11/2018 17:42

Ooo there Gregg's range to and yes the vienetta on a stick is amazing

isseywithcats · 11/11/2018 17:50

the greggs steak bakes because they come straight from the oven taste brill as the pastry is nice and crunchy, thier fish range is good, the mumbai curry range are very tasty, the frozen mince with chopped onion is great as no having to chop onions and its lean mince too, the big bags of chicken breasts are always handy, the roasting joints when they have the four for a tenner offer are great if theres just 2 or 3 of you

treacledan71 · 11/11/2018 17:53

They do Greggs stuff which is great for kids. The Tandoori chicken kebabs on sticks are lovely and really heathly. I find some of their grocery stuff not as cheap as everything seems to be rounded to a 1.00 where you could get cheaper elsewhere. Good shop to go if you want inspiration and something different.

Skinandbones · 11/11/2018 17:54

They do frozen cooked chicken in different flavours, dd loves that she can throw some on a salad for her dinner.
Greggs sausage rolls to cook yourself.
I usually get the frozen garlic, ginger and chilli, all chopped and ready to chuck in whatever I'm cooking.
And yes the hash brown fries are lush.
