Modern trends that annoy you

Following on from the modern dining trends that annoy you what general modern stuff annoys you?

Mine are:

People taking selfies in toilets

Being asked for my email address at a till

Wasteful plastic tat in the shops

OP posts:
Dawsonforehead · 11/11/2018 00:25

The obsession with carbohydrates being sinful, kale is not an alternative to pasta

Celebrities who happen to be mums writing books and telling us how to be perfect mums. No love, you are famous for being a singer/presenter/actress, infallible parenthood isn't what made you famous

Packets of crisps and chocolates getting smaller

The term "millenials" irritates me, so everyone born circa 1980 onwards are now the same person with the same opinions. Have we grouped people in to categories like this in the past?

Adding "chic" to everything. Hippy-chic. Boho-chic. Geek-chic.

All programmes now being about it featuring celebrities. Don't need to see them dance, cook or date each other. Non-celebrities are actually more interesting and not just looking for a second run at their careers

PippilottaLongstocking · 11/11/2018 00:31

Cigarette ends on the floor
Music played loudly from phones in public
People who think their right to drink through a plastic straw is more important than everyone’s (not to mention the animals) right to a planet that we can actually live on

HeronLanyon · 11/11/2018 00:35

Plastic surgery - women just looking awful and damaged.
Emails at tills YES.
People walking around with coffee everywhere (on pavements not around the house obvs).
Selfies
Coffee in supermarkets.
Till experience generally - free offers- do you have a x card - email malarkey etc it just takes forever just to buy something !
Rant over. Grin

FabulousTomatoes · 11/11/2018 00:38

Agree with pretty much everyone here (apart from the poster who cares more about her special teeth than the environment Angry)

#girlboss. Just... fuck off.

SusieQ5604 · 11/11/2018 00:43

Having to self address your own thank you card envelope at a baby or bridal shower.

Athena51 · 11/11/2018 00:43

Diets as a substitute for religion, people are so zealous, it's just food.

I've had to unfollow a couple of friends on FB because they've gone keto and fucking hell do we all know about it. Well they can prise my carbs out of my cold dead hand and sod off with their fake keto bread and mugcakes and frankenfoods.

God that's better Grin

craftymum01 · 11/11/2018 01:00

‘Share this if you love your daughter’

‘Share if you have the most awesome mum!’

Ergh!!!

Polkasq · 11/11/2018 01:12

I'm guessing the garden centres wouldn't be profitable enough otherwise, hence the clothes, gifts, cafes, homewares etc. They exist to make enough money, not to win the good taste award.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 11/11/2018 01:34

I don't mind a 'normal' selfie. It's quite nice to see a couple taking a picture together on their anniversary or something. Not so much when they're filtered to fuck and shared with a million hashtags so their 1000 followers (of whom they personally know about ten) can find them.

Inclusiveness is fine and dandy, but some things need to stay exclusive. I don't think sessions at the local soft play specifically set up for autistic children should be inclusive to all other children. I don't think women's groups should be inclusive to men.

I hate the consumerism and self obsession of everything. Vacuous 'personalities' earning £££ doing the most inane shit on youtube. A new 'tradition' being brought out every year for every holiday - all of which are purely to make people spend more money. Why do we need elf on the shelf, black friday and christmas eve boxes?

One trend that (I'm sorry) MN is absolutely the worst for, is overthinking every single tiny little thing. You can tell someone you don't want to go to the thing they want you to go to without getting all angsty about it. You can ask your neighbour for a favour if you want. You can move your fridge slightly to the left without agonising over whether you'll need to repaint that tiny bit of wall.

Make up. I used to be - up until maybe a year ago - a make up junkie. I have so much it's embarrassing. But now I'm embarrassed I have so much and it also upsets me on a daily basis that I 'have' to wear it every day. Beautiful young women, beautiful old women, wearing so much make up they could be any age from 20-60 and also could easily be men in drag. It's gross.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 11/11/2018 01:40

Oh - and stag and hen dos that cost £££.

Lweji · 11/11/2018 01:54

I'm well over 40, so most modern trends. I agree with most of the thread. I feel it's my duty.

1forAll74 · 11/11/2018 02:19

Biggest thing is, people everywhere, with a phone glued to them, all like zombies, walking down the street. using them whilst driving cars, using them in cafes and restaurants, using them in toilets at pubs, putting them on the bar in pubs and keep on checking them. and showing you their crap photos on them. And many young women -girls etc,who put literally endless selfies of themselves on the net,all looking like identical duck faced people with slug eyebrows.

I don't get annoyed at these things really, I just think its more than sad, that this is how things have become now..

Pepper123123 · 11/11/2018 02:38

Making up names for cross breeds/mutts so they can add a hefty price tag for an inbred, deformed dog born with a lifetime of health issues. It's not a Jug, it's a cross breed.

Also, eyebrows too close together. I don't mean ones that naturally grow that way, I mean beauticians tattooing or microblading then too close together. They're meant to start at your nostrils!

LittlePaintBox · 11/11/2018 02:39

People pulling ridiculous faces in photographs.

speakout · 11/11/2018 05:58

I love modern life.

Compared to when I was growing up.

No internet, no phone, no landline, No fridge, no car. Abuse of women ignored by police. Women unable to get loans. Child abuse acceptable. Racism and homophobia acceptable

Give me 2018...

BogstandardBelle · 11/11/2018 06:05

Treats. People endlessly «treating themselves» to crap food and fizzy drinks. Massive portion sizes. Huge desserts. All you can stuff in yr gullet buffets. And a huge obesity problem.

Shockers · 11/11/2018 06:34

Cake smashes.

Hanuman · 11/11/2018 06:40

Baby showers.

I don't want to celebrate a baby who isn't here yet - I want to get a nice gift when they have safely arrived!

Plus, the events themselves sound so cheesy.

Maidsrus · 11/11/2018 07:04

Absolutely all of this I agree with (except I like red velvet cake CakeSmile. But also that there is pressure to do it all and in a couple of my friendship groups I feel like the weird one for not being a rampant consumer and wanting to buy myself plastic tat and Uber expensive advent calendars and the like...

Booie09 · 11/11/2018 07:22

Eyebrows
Fake eyelashes
Pouting
Girls with rollers in their hair, in the supermarkets.
Men in skinny jeans
Beards
Silver furniture
Emails at tills
People getting offended at everything.

HeronLanyon · 11/11/2018 07:36

smashes I am lucky enough to have had to look up ‘cake smashes’. Urghhh! ‘Making memories!’ Urghhh. As if there aren’t enough natural real (free) opportunities to snap babies being messy with food !

LonelyandTiredandLow · 11/11/2018 08:03

The incessant advertising - I want to watch a scandi-noir in C4 in bed, not sit through a whole day of advertising where i'm not allowed to check my emails because it refuses to play unless i'm glued to it like a good consumer Hmm
Adverts that seem to have used my phone and laptop to spy on me - glibly mention once laughing so much you weed on a walk with a friend and you'll have adverts for months for tenor lady Hmm

HarrySnotter · 11/11/2018 08:06

Selfies
The 'me, me, me' attitude so prevalent these days.
Just about everything mentioned on this thread actually.

HesARealDouche · 11/11/2018 08:33

Yes to the people at concerts who film it and view it through the screen! You might as well save your money and watch it on YouTube later!!!

morningconstitutional2017 · 11/11/2018 08:38

My pet hate is what I call the 'sleek look' of modern stuff such as plugs which no longer have a 'string' to attach it or whatever it's called - you just push then to open/close. It looks good but is not necessarily an improvement.

New mobile phones no longer come with a meaningful booklet of instructions - you're expected to just know how it works - or download it for yourself.

Modern houses no longer have airing cupboards as combi boilers have made them obsolete.

Having to put petrol in a car yourself, I don't mind it too much but we used to have a petrol station which did this for you - a great boon to the many older drivers in my last town.
