DS is only 4 and couldn't get to the toilet in time while at school..result stinky shoes! I tried wiping with disinfectant and drying on the radiator but if anything they smell worse! He obv didn't just trickle but flooded them!! I've googled putting leather shoes in the washing machine and it's a def No. So what should I do? I need to wash and dry before Mon. We can't afford another pair..these were £43!! Gutted!! Thanks for any help out there x

Sprinkle liberally with bicarb and give it a rub in. Newspaper scrunched up in the toes and get them really dry then give them a brush out.

lljkk · 10/11/2018 08:42

I've washed leather shoes before in machine.

Hand wash in cool soapy water and dry well, I should think. Maybe even just a wiped down wash. Put outside in wind to air them out, too.

Can you afford one of those footsprays that help remove odours? Only £2 or so I think, can use that if any residual smell after wash.

TwoGinScentedTears · 10/11/2018 08:44

They need bicarbonate and air.

And wiping over with proper brown dettol.

And more air.

You can get enzyme cleaner stuff from vets that gets rid of wee smells from animals, maybe that would work?

Herja · 10/11/2018 08:46

Air and bicarb. After that I'd probably give the inside a spray with pet cage spray stuff. Dettol the outside and then polish very thoroughly.

AfterSchoolWorry · 10/11/2018 08:47

Two bags of bicarbonate of soda, fill the shoes. Leave for 24-48 hours.

I would scrub with biological washing powder then hang them outside all day today. Bring them in tonight, stuff with newspaper and dry somewhere warm but not actually on the radiator. See how they are tomorrow. I reckon they'll be fine.

Hoppinggreen · 10/11/2018 08:48

Dog/cat wee cleaner from pet shop

PoliticalBiscuit · 10/11/2018 08:48

We had that.

I threw in washing machine with biological powder (please use bio) and left to dry. It still wasn't quite odour free so I then left some catsan cat litter in it for a day then hoovered out.

StartingAgain1 · 10/11/2018 08:49

I would put them in the machine on the shortest wash, low spin then air as much as possible. If you are going to buy another pair anyway its worth a try.

theclockticksslowly · 10/11/2018 08:49

I’ve washed Clark’s leather school shoes in a sink of soapy water, rinsed. Blot dry with newspaper and stuff with paper for a bit to get most of the wet out. Then put in a sealed plastic tub filled with rice over night - dry and not smelly in the morning.

Glad to see others share my mother's faith in "outside in the fresh air" as a cure for anything!

LadyChatterlysLoofah · 10/11/2018 08:50

For cleaning up pet accidents, a solution of BIO washing powder, rather than disinfectant, is recommended. Apparently destroys the organic substances, so discouraging cats etc from scent marking by removing the urine smell. May help you?

DontHarshMyMello · 10/11/2018 08:52

Did you try Zoflora?

goose1964 · 10/11/2018 08:54

if you have cats fill with cat litter & put outdoors

redsummershoes · 10/11/2018 08:54

rinse them very well, then stuff with newspaper to dry.
once almost dry, take out newspaper and fill with cat litter.
then put on shoe polish.

been there, done it

pastabest · 10/11/2018 08:56

I would wash/soak/scrub them in a sink full of hot water and a capful of zoflora then leave them somewhere warm to dry over the weekend.

Suspect some of the smell is wet leather rather than pee anyway.

Janek · 10/11/2018 08:58

I would spray the inside with febreeze, poss after the handwashing-with-soapy-water advice above. IME febreeze gets rid of the smell of urine (although I admit I have never tried it in shoes).

HotInWinter · 10/11/2018 09:00

Rinse a couple of times (first time with bio washing detergent if you have it), then stuff with newspaper and leave half a day. Sprinkle liberally with bicarb, and stuff with fresh newspaper. Replace the paper every time it gets soggy.

chickhonhoneybabe · 10/11/2018 09:00

Wipe them out with diluted washing powder/liquid then put some cat litter cristals in some socks and place into the shoes to soak up the moisture/ odour.

Onecutefox · 10/11/2018 09:02

Wash and rinse them by hand then put them inside of a washing bag and let the washing machine spin. This will help to drain them of the excessive moisture. After that put outside to dry. It looks as a nice
and sunny weather today. If you don't wash them properly with the washing liquid etc you won't be able to get rid off that urine smell that easily.

bluebell2017 · 10/11/2018 09:04

Pop them in the washing machine at 40 degrees. It'll be absolutely fine as a one-off - I've done so myself. I remember being shocked when someone else told me that was what they did, but eventually tried it in an act of desparation following an exceptionally muddy walk when I simply couldn't remove the mud from the detailing. And it worked fine. After washing, stuff with newspapers and leave somewhere warm to dry overnight. And then give them a good polish.

InflagranteDelicto · 10/11/2018 09:06

I've used cat litter for stinky trainers. Worked a treat. Bio detergent and bicarb would also remove the smell.

user789653241 · 10/11/2018 09:08

I would just wash it. If you can't get rid of the smell, it's ruined anyway.

Sitranced · 10/11/2018 09:11

Wash them, it's worth a try. Wool/warm setting. Leave to air dry for a day or two.
