What is diazepam like?

SinkGirl · 09/11/2018 19:55

Doctor has prescribed me a few days worth as my back is totally screwed up and over the course of a week it’s just gotten worse to the point I can barely move.

Will it just knock me on my ass? He’s told me to take one three times a day but says I can take up to 4 at a time so surely one won’t completely knock me out?

I take morphine for another condition but that doesn’t really make me drowsy any more. DH is off work all weekend so it’s not like I have to be in charge of the kids.

It makes me very floaty. I don’t think you’d be fit to drive

Moonshine86 · 09/11/2018 19:58

It makes me feel very relaxed but not drowsy. What dosage have you been prescribed?

Moonshine86 · 09/11/2018 20:00

I know doctors can be reluctant to prescribe as they can be addictive.

If you take morphine you may not notice a difference.
I take tramadol daily ( max dosage) plus other morphine based drugs if my pain warrants it.
I recently had to undergo a procedure.
I took 10mg diazepam - and I didn’t feel any different.
It will help you back but I very much doubt you will get the floaty feeling. And if you feel fine to drive on morphine then take a diazepam , and see how you feel .

Amber0685 · 09/11/2018 20:02

Makes me very drowsy. I would start with half a tablet and take it in the evening as effects different people differently.

UpstartCrow · 09/11/2018 20:03

If they said you can take up to 4 at a time, is it a low dose? Because its usually 4 a day.
Some people do find it addictive but not everyone. If you can manage your morphine, you can manage diazepam as its not as strong.

Its a muscle relaxant, you may need panty liners. It produces a fuzzy, floaty feeling in a similar way to morphine, so you're already familiar with managing the sensation.

bobstersmum · 09/11/2018 20:03

I had it prescribed once when my anxiety was bad, it just made me feel nicely relaxed. If you aren't taking it for anxiety it may make you tired but I doubt it will knock you out unless it's a high dose.

Bipolarbitch · 09/11/2018 20:04

I have a prescription every now and then to interrupt a mildly manic episode before it escalates. It works for relaxation in the right dose is the only thing I trust for anxiety. It is very very addictive, need to be mindful of that.

SinkGirl · 09/11/2018 20:08

Thanks all, yes a very low dose I think (2mg) hence why I can take so many, although will start with one tonight and see how I go. Sounds like it won’t knock me out then which is good, I just hope it helps the muscles relax. I don’t drive so that’s not an issue.

makes me very drowsy. and I get an awful 'dead rat' feeling in my mouth the next day.

take before bed after you made yourself comfortable with a water bottle by the bed and after being to the loo

SinkGirl · 09/11/2018 20:15

Thanks all - I’m not too worried about addiction, it’s a very low dose and I’ve only got 20. I’m hoping that one three times a day for three days will help my back enough to get moving, and then I have some leftover if I have the same problem down the line (my back is in a terrible state, has been for two years, but occasionally it flares up very badly). I usually manage it myself and just push through but this time it’s just getting worse.

I’ve been on morphine for years with no addiction issues (managed to cut my dose by 90% on my own when my pain improved after a procedure and have maintained that dose for a few years) so hopefully I won’t have any trouble with a few days of this but I’ll be careful :)

Stinkycheeseandbreadcrumbs · 09/11/2018 21:04

I've had it prescribed during a period of anxiety. I took 10 mg to get any impact. I stumbled getting up to to the loo during night.

I took some left over pills when I had a back back and it helped more than anything else.

Hope your back gets better OP.

popcornwizard · 09/11/2018 21:08

It's like a little fluffy cloud of vacant. I took it for back pain for a couple of days. The pain was still there but it was far, far away. I've recently taken morphine for a few days and could barely speak or concentrate. Personally prefer diazepam, it's warmer.

Gimmeesugar · 09/11/2018 21:10

I take it for a fear of flying but need a massive dose to have any effect - around 20mg - and I’m still fully functioning, not sleepy and still feel anxious. Wouldn’t drive obviously. 2mg I literally wouldn’t notice.....

SinkGirl · 09/11/2018 21:45

Yeah... took one at 8:15, nothing happened at all. Took another one fifteen minutes ago and hoping it does something. I don’t care about feeling drowsy, just want the muscles to relax a bit.

OP posts:
UpstartCrow · 09/11/2018 21:53

I use it with a hot water bottle.

SinkGirl · 09/11/2018 22:13

Damn it, no relief at all. Balls, was really hoping it would help. Don’t want to take more now in case there’s a problem while I sleep but will try a bigger dose in the morning I guess.

Don’t feel like I can call up and say it’s done bugger all on Monday as I’ll just sound like a drug seeker!

OP posts:
Delatron · 09/11/2018 22:18

I think if it’s not effective then you can say you want something else.

How did you do your back in? Does any position provide relief? Can you sleep? Sympathies!

itssquidstella · 09/11/2018 22:20

I had it once for a long haul flight. Only one tablet so a small dose - maybe 5mg?

I felt woozy and sleepy for about an hour then totally normal again. Felt quite cheated tbh!

weebarra · 09/11/2018 22:30

I used to take it before chemo. Made it a little bit more bearable but can't remember the dosage.

UpstartCrow · 09/11/2018 22:31

I think if you regularly take morphine, then diazepam wont be very effective.

Delatron · 09/11/2018 22:38

weebarra I used to take it before Chemo, it did take the edge off and I was thankful for it.

Can’t see how it would work on really bad pain. Other than make you more relaxed.

nextdoorscatwantstomovein · 09/11/2018 23:34

Different people react differently, 6ft2 dh is completely floored by 2mg, I'm 5ft and 10mg makes me feel slightly drowsy, mind you the non-drowsy antihistamines knock me out for 16 hours out of 24

granadagirl · 10/11/2018 00:26

If you take morphine than I don’t think a 2mg if D will touch you.

I take 2 mg everyday for anxiety, the other day I had terrible back spasms which stopped me in my tracks. Told Gp about spasms and said I thought D’s help with relaxing so no pain. Her answer was not at that low dose!

I think you would need at least 5mg even that might not touch it !

I get everybody react differently, but if your on morphine, I can’t understand why Gp only give you 2mg’s.
If it doesn’t work(which I think it won’t at such a low dose, regardless of x3/4 times a day..
I’d try cbt cream or oil if you can tolerate the taste, but get a reputable company ie cbd brothers.

SinkGirl · 10/11/2018 08:06

Thanks all. It’s not meant to work as a painkiller, but as a muscle relaxant so that I can start trying to move and stretch more. I don’t think they work on the same receptors as opiates so I didn’t think taking morphine would make them less effective. Bummer.

I’ve had problems with my back for a couple of years, since breast pumping for a long time. I am seeing my regular gp next week as it’s just getting ridiculous now. Have tried all the stuff they tell you to do. It’s flared up this week though because of working on a laptop on a bad chair for a couple of days, which made it worse - then I was putting one of my boys to bed and it felt like something in my back snapped (I’m sure it didn’t). Haven’t been able to straighten out or turn my head without a lot of pain and everything is so clenched.

Oh well. Guess I’ll have to take a higher dose this morning and hope that’s enough to make it easier to move.
