Too embarassed for work tomorrow

I've just had an 'organic perm'. Nothing like what I expected and it's way more obvious than I'd hoped.

And I have that same horrible feeling as I did so many years ago when I'd be embarrassed to go to the school the day after a bad haircut!

Probably the first thing people will say is something along the lines of "WTF, have you had a perm?" (in a large open plan office) and I just don't want to admit that I have even though it's obvious.

Any advice or bad hair stories welcome!

Oh...that's rather curly. No advice but Shock

greytshirt · 07/11/2018 21:42

If Elle Woods taught us anything its that if you wet your hair within 24 hours of a perm you deactivate the ammonium thygocolate and the curls dont hold.... Would this work on "organic" perms?

Gawd, this probably isn't too helpful, OP, but it's a valuable lesson in learning not to give a fuck.

KrispyKremes yes, that's what I'm kind of hoping will happen. Although there's quite a lot of ribbing within the team.

SuperstarDJ I'm usually quite an optimistic person and tried my best to see it in the best possible light when I got home and looked in the mirror. But with all the will in the world I could not get away from the fact that it looked as though a poodle had just died on my head.

SuperstarDJ · 07/11/2018 21:44

Have you tried combing it with a wide tooth comb to try and loosen the curls a bit?

cakedup · 07/11/2018 21:45

I actually have never seen Legally Blonde before! Seen a few clips but it just never appealed. Well I guess washing it could work because I've been told NOT to wash it for the next 48 hours.

in the xxxx it was really fashionable to have big hair - go with it - got any big loopy ear rings & perhaps bright & bold top? Look everybody in the eye & if anybody says anything say " I am trying out a new me" (think bold red & bold patterns retro 1960's)

mumsastudent · 07/11/2018 21:47

don't wash you may get tighter curls!!!!!

cakedup · 07/11/2018 21:49

SuperstarDJ I am going to do that before I go to bed tonight. I've actually just got it up tied up right now as DS keeps looking at me funny.

mumsastudent I kind of like that...I do actually have a lot of retro/vintage gear so maybe I could pull it off!

Wash it and put loads of conditioner on, then blow dry it as smooth as you can. This soon after a perm your hair is still very elastic and blow drying can actually cause up to 50% of the perm to drop. (Hairdresser)

MadisonAvenue · 07/11/2018 21:52

The curls will definitely loosen over the next couple of weeks.

On one occasion that I had my hair permed, I was perfectly happy with it until I saw my sister in law that night and she started calling me Crystal Tipps (a kids TV show back in the 70s) and I felt just like you about going into work the next day. No one said anything negative though, just that they liked it.

Ohyesiam · 07/11/2018 21:54

Say you’ve started the Curly Girl Method, and it’s giving fast impressive results.

cakedup · 07/11/2018 21:59

MonoClue thanks for the advice. So that's £160 down the drain! The only big thing I've treated myself to in the last 13 years (since i've had DS!) and I'm now going to wash it out!

OP posts:
cakedup · 07/11/2018 22:00

Ohyesiam do you know what, I actually did think of that!! I wonder if anyone will buy it. And the thing is I was going to start the Curly Girl method after having this perm because I think it was so much washing that took the curls out of my hair in the first place!

ThePencil · 07/11/2018 22:04

Claim it's step 1 in some kind of process to make your hair look fabulous. Say things like "oh, for the first couple of weeks you get these mad curls, but then it really revitalises your hair and it starts to look incredible!". Then you have 2 weeks to either come up with something to make it look incredible, or hope that everyone loses interest.

cakedup · 07/11/2018 22:08

Good one ThePencil - well the curls are meant to drop in a couple of weeks so that would work quite well!

Seriously.

We need a photo.

Dafspunk · 07/11/2018 22:18

No use at all to you now but note for the future... always make significant hair changes on a Friday evening/Saturday morning (assuming you work Mon-Fri). Gives you a bit of leeway before facing the masses.

cakedup · 07/11/2018 22:20

I know Dafspunk ! I am seriously kicking myself for that schoolboy error!! I work term time too so should have done it in the school holidays.

Hezz I would actually hate it if the hairdresser somehow stumbled across this thread and recognised my hair...because she really was the loveliest person ever.

John Freida Frizz Ease will be your new friend!

Bingowingslikeashieldofsteel · 07/11/2018 22:23

The boys at school are either doing or talking about getting these perms at the mo. Rock the look and if anyone questions you point them in the direction of trendy 14 year old boys and call them a loser (or worse if you can get away with it, we ain't that posh a school tbf!)

cakedup · 07/11/2018 22:26

Bingowingslikeashieldofsteel seriously? School boys are getting perms?? Didn't realise it was becoming a thing. That does make me feel a bit better, although I'm really not sure why.

OP posts:
cakedup · 07/11/2018 22:27

BlueJava oh Frizz Ease has been my friend for a long time!
