Can you do a weeks family shop in Aldi?

Right I’m finally giving in and doing a family shop at Aldi in Saturday. I have no idea what to buy! We normally plan and do an online shop with sainsburys but I can not keep spending £90-100 there!

What meals do you buy? Do they have Mexican things etc?

We are a family of 2 adults, 2 preteens and a toddler.

We do our weekly shop there and don’t go anywhere else. It might take you 2/3 weeks to get used to it but it’s definitrly doable.

AamdC · 07/11/2018 17:55

You can , rhey have most things , but only.one or two choices of most things , they have tacos , chilli mixes , fajita.kits etc .

TokyoSushi · 07/11/2018 17:55

Definitely doable, might take a couple of weeks to get into it/find what you like but absolutely possible.

We've converted now, there are a couple of things that you can't get but you learn what they are pretty quickly. We spend a similar amount, around £80 but at Aldi we get basically 'anything we want' whereas at Tesco we just used to get the minimum.

Yep I find there's less choice than the massive supermarkets but I like the quality better.

Yogagirl123 · 07/11/2018 17:56

Try it, they sell everything you need.

We switched and have been happy with the products we purchased, very good quality and a good shopping experience and much cheaper without any doubt.

You do need to steer your eyes away from the middle aisle, they are the devils work in temptation 😂

Almostthere15 · 07/11/2018 17:57

We can but not every week ifsyim. As there are some things you can't get. They did have Mexican (complete knock off of old el paso).

The layout takes a bit of getting used to and the tills are an experience in themselves (you know about the packing I presume) but it is absolutely worth a go.

For what it's worth the things I go elsewhere for aee toilet roll, weetabix (unless they have the brand, their own are too hard according to the others in the house, even on blind taste test), washing up liquid and washing powder.

Strawberrybelly · 07/11/2018 17:58

We can get everything in there except Sheba for the fussy cat and rabbit food.

Whatsnewwithyou · 07/11/2018 17:59

When you say Mexican things...it's very easy to make things like salsa from scratch, also fajitas, guacamole, burritos, quesadillas etc. I do buy tortillas but not the kits as cooking from scratch tastes so much nicer and fresher. However they probably do sell some basic kits.

Eminybob · 07/11/2018 17:59

Yeah we do.
I top up a few bits from Tesco, like brands or specifics that are not available in Aldi, but its not essential to do that, just preference.

Lindah1 · 07/11/2018 18:00

Yes absolutely, only things you may need extra are fancy ingredients

Nightfall1983 · 07/11/2018 18:00

Do you mean Old El Paso type things, kits/mixes/salsa etc? If so then yes! They do their own brand plus sometimes have Branded on offer too.

I’d say it depends how flexible you are; are you someone who always buys the same things and meal plans? Then it might take some getting used to/you will need to make changes. But if you are flexible and eat a range of food normally it should be an easy switch.

Unescorted · 07/11/2018 18:13

Yes but some things they only have at certain times of the year... Yeast and strong flour disappeared in August. Cornflour went for a bit. It is now back.

TheQueef · 07/11/2018 18:16

Easily.
Give yourself plenty of time and don't take dc.

Kezzie200 · 07/11/2018 18:17

You will get used to it. I still pop into other shops for bits spices, chipotle paste etc but you will get used to it.

I’m actually finding Tesco cheaper at the moment as I’ve been getting money off vouchers in the post. I spent £60-£70 for entire week’s shops and there was loss of deals on, came out with bags and bags of stuff. In lidles I came out with one bag and had spend £30 quid and feel it’s getting dearer in there than it used to be. Aldi I like acouple of things but again I doubt I’d spend much less than I have anywhere else.

I was an Aldi convert for years but have gone off it recently and now I’m back to Tesco online. I think it’s because I could only get certain things from other shops so would inevitably spend more in those shops.

Also, I haven’t found the quality that great in the last year or so. I wouldn’t touch Aldi’s regular chicken for example, it’s full of white sinew and blood clots, so I would buy the free range version instead.

I spend the same doing Tesco online, I just shop from the offers and plan from what’s there.

I don’t think £90-100 is that steep though, for essentially 4 adults and a toddler!

SoftlyCatchyMonkey1 · 07/11/2018 18:22

You may find that you have to shop in both before you get used to Aldi. But over time you'll see that you will be able to get nearly everything you need in Aldi

Cocobana · 07/11/2018 18:23

In my local aldi they always run out of fresh veg too quickly too and I can’t get what I need. I do like the store though.

Cocobana · 07/11/2018 18:25

I’m with you @DragonMamma and Tesco often send money off vouchers too and not daft ones they are decent savings, we’ve had £10 off a £70 shops and £7 off the week after it’s been great

Villanelle123 · 07/11/2018 18:25

I love the fajita kit! The chicken is already cut up for you 🤭

itssquidstella · 07/11/2018 18:36

Their herb and spice selection is pretty thin compared to other supermarkets, but other than that they have everything you need (and more!).

greendale17 · 07/11/2018 18:37

Tesco is cheaper for me now. Also I found Aldi fruit and veg to be awful quality. Never lasted more than a few days

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 07/11/2018 18:38

Yes I do my weekly shop there but I often have to do top ups elsewhere as they don't have everything I need.
