Can you do a weeks family shop in Aldi?

Right I’m finally giving in and doing a family shop at Aldi in Saturday. I have no idea what to buy! We normally plan and do an online shop with sainsburys but I can not keep spending £90-100 there!

What meals do you buy? Do they have Mexican things etc?

We are a family of 2 adults, 2 preteens and a toddler.

When it first opened, not quite, but these days, mostly. We might spend about another few quid at Tesco round the corner getting things we couldn't buy there, but even so it saves us so much money compared to any other supermarket.

We've now taken to referring to Tesco as 'The Posh Shop' Grin

Unescorted I noticed that strong flour and yeast are new products in our Aldi store this week.

We manage to do most of our Aldi now and yes it is mostly much cheaper.

We get a tesco online order for dairy free products - Alpro growing up milk, yoghurts, ice cream and cheese. I know some stores have started soya yoghurts but not ours. We also can’t get ready made hollandaise sauce, red lentils, pistachio and pine nuts and a few other things that I should make a list of. At this time of year they don’t sell blueberries and blackberries.

If you have dried cumin, paprika and chilli in your cupboard and garlic in your veg rack you can knock up decent fajitas/tacos with no need for branded kits.

I spend £70-80 ish a week on food for me, DH and DS. This also covers a box of formula for DD. We shop in Sainsbury's but I budget/plan carefully and cook everything from scratch.

Like some others I alternate. Aldi are great for lots of basics but some convenience foods not available (frozen onions/mash etc), also not keen on their yoghurts.

If your toddler is still in nappies, their nappies are excellent.

Only if you don't have fussy eaters!

I did a weeks shop this morning for £25. It took a few weeks for us to transition from doing the weekly shop in Asda to Aldi, but now we're happy eating mostly from Aldi for significantly less money. The oven pizzas are nice (we have the sourdough ham and mushroom one), the caramel slices are delicious and the steak is brilliant, and much less fatty and sinewy than Asda.

That said, sometimes the veg go off pretty quickly and they don't have everything - so this afternoon I had to pop to Morrisons for steel cut oats and steriliser bags.

It’s a supermarket
Same as the rest
Anymore stupid questions?

Strippervicar · 07/11/2018 20:20

Did one today for £49 for 3 of us with extras and a single bed set fir DD at £9.99. I do bulk buy meat and fish and freeze it so accounts for very low price. Plus I hardly eat the meat DH and DD have.
Only things I can't get are frozen garlic, frozen carrots, indian curry paste (can have thai) and freddo frogs. It's cut so much from our bill.

Strippervicar · 07/11/2018 20:23

Oh yes, no tinned lentils.

NotMeNoNo · 07/11/2018 20:25

They had a Mexican special week recently I think, there might still be some stock

dementedma · 07/11/2018 20:29

ours has lentils, split peas, fresh herbs, blueberries etc
Do our weekly shop there all the time. only thing i dislike is the amount of shrink wrapping on the veg and the fruit and veg seems to go mouldy quickly - ironically.

We go twice a week and spend around £140 in total. That's for 3 adults, 2 rugby mad, sporty, sixth formers, 1 cat and 1 small dog. It has saved us a fortune!

I tend to buy just ingredients and cook properly every night, its great for basics, but limited choice if you are looking for ready meals.

Tip! Their canned products are not so good.

I'm another one who shopped at Aldi for about 18 months but have now gone back to Tesco online. I just find the quality of the food is much better and cost wise it's about the same. plus I don't have to go shopping on my day off and/or drag the dc with me which is a winner for me

I spend £60 per week for 2 adults and 3 dc (14, 8 and 6). I meal plan and get whatever is on offer. Plus Tesco regularly send me coupons for £8 off a £40 shop.

That said, yes you certainly can do a weeks shop at Aldi and I do pop in there now and again when they have things like 59p bags of satsumas etc.

Mummysharkdoodoodoo · 10/11/2018 18:34

I did it! Bought a whole trolley full and it came to £55! Put it all in a basket on sainsburys and it was £80!
