Paying a cheque in via online banking!!!

I am very impressed to discover that in today's modern age, you can pay a cheque in (HSBC) via the mobile banking app.

No trudging into town to pay it in as all the mini branches have been closed down. Instructions here

Unsure if other banks offer this service but how awesome!

Yes I’ve done it with Halifax. Sorcery!!

MnerXX · 07/11/2018 12:44

Wow! That is cool!

GunpowderGelatine · 07/11/2018 12:44

Cool! Is that just personal or can business banking do it too?

Brilliant! The only cheques I get are from my 93 year old grandma at birthdays and Christmas and I can never get to a bank to pay them in. Thanks!

outnumbered77 · 07/11/2018 12:51

Ooh wonder if this is coming to first direct soon

Onatreebyariver · 07/11/2018 12:52

That really IS awesome!

cjt110 · 07/11/2018 12:52

GunpowderGelatine No idea.... Give it a google.

I am suitably impressed... AND it clears quicker!!!

My work sends cheques for people who claim expenses but don't have an expenses account - so generally one off claims.

Bloody awesome.

Basically, log in, take a photo of the front and back of the chq... select where you want it to go and wait til 23.59 the next day Grin Grin

And, I am pleased to share this information with others too! Just a shame Monzo doesn't offer this function yet as Monzo are shit hot with everything else.

Lloyds do it and I've used it around 4 times now. It is good although very annoying having to line the cheque up exactly while the phone tells you to go up and down and in and out Grin.

But it saves the cost of a stamp.

skyesayshi · 07/11/2018 12:55

Lloyds is the same, front and back of the cheque, although it does show it instantly on your account, it takes the usual period to clear.

CheddarIsNotTheOnlyCheese · 07/11/2018 12:55

Wish this was available with RBS. It was the reason I turned down a job that paid ok but I couldn't ever find the time to travel 18 miles or anyone to pay it in for me.

CookPassBabtridge · 07/11/2018 12:57

It's amazing isn't it, the rare cheque I get takes ages for me to trudge to a far away town to the bank. I saw this on Halifax last year and was very impressed!

Peridot1 · 07/11/2018 12:58

Whatever will they think of next?! Grin

Wish I’d known that a few weeks ago. MIL sent DS a cheque for his birthday and I took it in the bank to lodge for him. Nice chap helps me with the machine. I have the paying in book. We do what we need to but the payment is rejected. Then he spots it’s a HSBC paying in book. I was in NatWest! Which is where I bank. Forgot DS is with HSBC. Blush.

olderthanyouthink · 07/11/2018 13:00

FFS I need to pay in a cheque and I'm with NatWest. Looks like they're the only one who don't do it.

QuestionableMouse · 07/11/2018 13:01

Lloyds do this too. Much easier!

Been available in the states for a few years apparently.

Justwanttoweeinpeace · 07/11/2018 13:01

Shameless placemark - thanks for this OP

Strawberrylaceaddict · 07/11/2018 13:01

This is a new process that all banks have to offer in the near future. I’ve worked on the project, so whilst the online/app bit isn’t mandatory a lot of banks are developing this to move with the changing technology. The clearing process however is mandatory, which is why this changed and means in most cases your cheque will clear the following working day.

cjt110 · 07/11/2018 13:04

olderthanyouthink You can pay into NW at the Post Office if that helps?

OP posts:
cjt110 · 07/11/2018 13:04

I don't mind next working day - It used to be 5 working days didn't it?

RunSweatLaughAndLatte · 07/11/2018 13:06

Yes it's a fairly new thing, all banks should be doing it now

Strawberrylaceaddict · 07/11/2018 13:09

Yep, sometimes longer. Almost all banks are offering this clearing timescale now (there is a date coming up which everyone has to meet). A lot of them now will at least have the ability to pay it in at the cash machine inside the branch too, so no need to queue up. I would imagine that by the end of next year everyone would also have a feature that allows you to do this online, by simply taking a picture of your cheque. For those that still use cheques, it makes a huge difference.

LadyGregorysToothbrush · 07/11/2018 13:09

Can you pay in foreign currency (euro) cheques as well?

cjt110 · 07/11/2018 13:11

I couldn't see an option with HSBC. Have a look at their website.

skyesayshi · 07/11/2018 13:11

I was banking via the Post Office previously and I think that they do take most banks now. I recommended the PO to anybody who complained that their bank was closing. Our local rural town only has a Lloyds now, the other 3 all closed and also took their cashpoints with them.

The PO doesn't show credits until the next day.

Lloyds and the PO both gained a lot of new customers so hopefully that will keep them going.

Just remember that if you bank via an app, that you need to hold on to the cheque until you are sure that it hasn't been rejected.
