Does anyone know the best excercises to gain weight at home?

OP posts:
ileclerc · 07/11/2018 14:28

You can't exercise to gain weight op unless you mean bulking muscle but I don't think that's going to help you right now.

MarthaArthur · 07/11/2018 14:50

I more mean i need to excercise as i have been in bed for over a month but i dint want to lose weight doing in. Google is giving me too many opposite views.

I bought pizza and strawberry milk just now i forgot the complan as its raining and i felt overwhelmed being outside.

It's going to be more portion sizes, obviously eating peanut butter on toast will help but if you're not eating regularly enough you won't gain anything.

You need to eat bigger portions, more often, start with what you can manage and add a little more each day.

MarthaArthur · 07/11/2018 17:12

I will try adding more.

So far i have had pizza a pear and two glasses of milkshake today and i have kept it all down.

I'm currently eating some pretty nasty crisps but they are staying down. :)

Hi Martha,

Sorry to hear that you have been so unwell with OCD and Depression. I have severe OCD too and know how much it sucks.

Complan might involve quite a lot of drinking if you're not feeling up to keeping much down- you can buy 'Fortisip condensed' in very small bottles, which allow you to take in lots of calories without having to drink/eat much. You can buy those from 'Chemist Direct' and probably other online chemists (just check it's a legitimate website!) so you don't need to trek out to buy some.

Pizza is great for putting on weight! Are there some foods that you find easier to keep down than others?

EmilyRosiEl · 08/11/2018 23:21

If I were you i would focus on very highly calorific foods so chocolate, doughnuts, cakes etc and then once you've put on some weight you can focus on starting more of a balanced diet.

Smoothie can be quite high in calories and would provide one of your five a day and some soups can be high in calories if you can stomach them.

PotteryGirl · 08/11/2018 23:29

GP with a referral to a nutritionist. I'm not sure you can go at this like a bull at a gate. I'm so sorry you've been poorly but I'd suggest you think long term about your health not just to next week. Slow and steady wins the race. 😍 Take care.

MarthaArthur · 09/11/2018 01:34

Thank you for your advice i will look into fortisip. Tbh i dont want to bother the gp because they stress me out so much. This has happened to me a few times and i had some minor blips with my heart and thyroid but im ok i recovered. I know i was stupid to allow this to happen again as i watched it happen in slow motion. I have been drinking strawberry milk for two days now and keeping it down but i didnt manage to eat today as my teeth are bleeding but i managed to go out and buy some new clothes i needed today which was good getting out the house. Had a minor blip with a man i agreed to a date with then rearranged now i said i dont want to meet him and hes angry at me so im anxious all over again.

Sorry i dont know why im telling you this. But tomorrow i have soup and can buy more milk. And maybe more food.

Oh bless you...you sound like you need to put YOU first, never mind fellas...and you're not stupid either so that's enough of that. I'm completely out of my depth here with my advice, it's probably a bit too simplistic to say put yourself first etc etc. The posters who have come on and said you should see your GP are right...if you can't eat because your teeth are bleeding you're got to address that professionally 😢. I'm glad you've got out and got some clothes that make you feel better, that's a great boost. I hope you have a lovely day and a positive one too..👍🏻.

LoniceraJaponica · 09/11/2018 08:47

I know you don't want to see your GP, but everything in all your posts screams out that you need professional medical help. Randoms on an internet forum aren't the best way forward.

MarthaArthur · 09/11/2018 15:20

I appreciate people saying i need to see the gp but right now its not an option for me. My mental health is very slowly improving and i dont need the anxiety the drs bring me right now. I have been drinking milk and trying to eat little and often and have managed to gain 1lb this week without excercising so i know i am on track its just hard

Ok If I was cooking to build someone up after a period of illness here's my list;
1.Ready Brek with full fat milk and maybe some bananas on top.

  1. Cottage Pie with mashed carrots and swede. Lentil Cottage Pie if veggie.
  2. Cauliflower Cheese with bread and butter.
  3. Fish Pie
  4. Apple Crumble with cream or custard
  5. Any kind of steamed sweet pudding with cream or custard

You can get most of these things as a ready meal if you're not up to cooking.

Feel better soon.

MarthaArthur · 09/11/2018 18:33

Thank you potterygirl thats great i will look into cooking some of these things.

When my daughter had to gain weight - on medical advice - we bought Fresubin for her on line. It is expensive but packed full of nutritional value and calories. She drank that as soon as she woke up abdcifvsge could not face a meal.

A typical day would be breakfast with honey and berries and cream.

Banana and custard mid morning or peanut butter on toast

Baked potato with beans and cheese and full fat yoghurt for lunch.

Hot chocolate with a couple of biscuits mid afternoon

Cottage pie with veg
Rice pudding for dinner.

Warm milk with honey and some chocolate before bed.

It was about protein and calcium and weight gain for her so not as much veg as we would normally have.

Horlicks or hot chocolate made with full fat milk is good
Chocolate
Fruit cake
Dried fruits
Ice cream

Good luck.

PotteryGirl · 09/11/2018 19:17

Don't be afraid to buy them as ready meals and add some fresh veg in..as long as you get a good portion and get your appetite back. Missed out the classics Macaroni Cheese and Spaghetti Bol...👍🏻

PoptartPoptart · 09/11/2018 19:19

Snack on handfuls of nuts. Very calorific but they contain good natural fats. Brazil, cashew, pistachio, almonds, macadamia etc.

MarthaArthur · 09/11/2018 19:43

Great suggestions here thanks. I havent thrown up in a good few days so all is going good at the moment! I even ate a sandwhich today so its progress i might buy one of the ready meals as well.

I have been seeing a dietician to try and increase my son’s weight and she recommended to try and make everything you eat as high in calories as possible. So if you are having potatoes, make it mash with added butter and cream. Again if you are having toast then slather it in butter, peanut butter etc Ensure everything is full fat like butter, milk, yoghurts etc. If your appetite is small then you need to make sure every bite you have has as much calories in as possible.

Witch25 · 12/11/2018 22:39

Sorry she also said to cut back on fruit and veg etc. It sounds wrong to hear it but if you fill up on strawberries for example then they are not very high in calories but will bulk out your stomach. Also don’t drink for an hour and a half before meals because this fools your stomach into thinking you are full. Try and drink milk rather than water too for thirst.

MarthaArthur · 12/11/2018 22:49

Thank you witch i have been drinking milk like theres no tomorrow which is helping. I will have to buy peanut butter.
