Does this piece of furniture exist?

I need to redo my sons room. He’s 8, so the only items of clothes he hangs up or needs to are smart shirts. I can’t see this ever changing as he gets older. Even my husband only hangs shirts, possibly some trousers. Everything else is folded in drawers and on shelves.
Anyway, DS room is fairly small. Not enough room for a wardrobe and a chest of drawers He really needs the drawer space, but I’d like a small area where he can hang. All the furniture I’ve seen are full sized wardrobes with 1 or 2 drawers underneath. What I would really like is 4 or 5 drawers and a small, half space for hanging. Or even a small cupboard type wardrobe that can go on the floor next to the chest of drawers. I have searched the internet tirelessly and haven’t found anything. I want to avoid typical “children’s” furniture.
Can anyone help?!?! I’m actually considering seeing if a carpenter can make me a custom made freestanding item of furniture because I’m at a loss. But that seems an excessive amount of ££ to spend for a kids room....
Thank you!

Look at Ikea pax wardrobes, you'd definitely be able to configure the inside to what you want

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 05/11/2018 06:53

An old fashioned 'gentleman's wardrobe' sounds like it would work. You can pick them up for peanuts in places like BHF furniture shops. It would most likely be dark wood but could be painted to suit your colour scheme easy enough.

It's called a chifforobe but they are hard to find!

Would baby furniture be the right dimensions?

Or just buy a standard wardrobe and put a chest of drawers inside it under the hanging rail?

tissuesosoft · 05/11/2018 06:56

Do you have any corner space? DD’s bedroom is small and we have one of these- www.very.co.uk/peru-corner-wardrobe/1188461160.prd?_requestid=6805&Ntt=corner%20wardrobe

Screamqueenz · 05/11/2018 06:56

I agree, look at IKEA pax, you can make the inside to your specifications.

WeeDangerousSpike · 05/11/2018 06:58

You want a 'combination wardrobe' OP

Mamabearx4 · 05/11/2018 07:03

I have a slim pax wardrobe, 3 actually, they have 2 or 3 rails in each cost about 60 for each. Works well for us

Pascha · 05/11/2018 07:03

I think your best bet might be Ikea Pax wardrobes as you can buy the carcass and fill it any way you want with pull out drawers and fit a rung at whatever level suits.

WhipItGood · 05/11/2018 07:04

I was also going to suggest PAX. It can be however you want inside.

Ha! Xposted with everyone.

Would this be any good OP?

My son had one of these type from Ikea (picture). The bottom part has shelves. I put a hanging rail in at top for his clothes. Not sure if they have any preowned on Ebay and the likes. It's only big enough for kids clothes hangers though. There are two in the picture. So one doesn't take up much space.

Thanks everyone. Haven’t had a chance to open any links yet, but the problem I’ve got with Pax, is that although you can configure the inside it doesn’t look like you can get full long drawers only half ones with half a carcass, if that makes sense? Also, they are huge - much deeper than they need to be. He has one in his room now and it takes up a huge amount of space. If I could get long drawers and a different depth it would work.... I’ll try and attach a pic of what he has now and that might explain the problem!

Look for a tallboy wardrobe.

I have the same issue with my ds and his small room. I’m planning on either simply putting a few hooks on the back of his door, or attaching a clothes rail to the wall in the small space behind his door. He only has about three things that need hanging up!

The children's wardrobe, stuva, from Ikea is very small. My 14 year old nephew has one, with black doors, as like your ds, he only hangs his school shirts and blazers.

wherehavealltheflowersgone · 05/11/2018 07:38

@Joinourclub that pic is exactly what I'm looking for for ds's room! Where is it from please?

Belindabelle · 05/11/2018 07:57

Forget about a wardrobe. Get a tall chest of drawers that will hold all underwear, pj's, sportswear, t shirts, sweatshirts, jeans etc.

Shirts and good clothes can go on nice wooden hangers. These can go on hooks either on the back of the door or on the wall above the drawers.

Another option would be to attach a rail to the wall and hang clothes from that.

Have a look at the ikea shop fitting range and hall furniture.

SinkGirl · 05/11/2018 08:01

We have a hanging rail fixed to the wall in our twins room, with a shelf below it and drawers under that. The previous owners did it and it’s really useful.

There are some inexpensive Ikea modular drawers with mesh baskets and there are hanging rails that go between two sets of drawers, if you have space. I think it’s called Algot
