Best waterproof warm kids coat

Last couple of years we have had assorted coats from joules / Boden .

Been pretty happy with them - the only thing I would have improved was they weren’t waterproof enough to cope with the snow really. And for DD both had fur on hood that couldn’t be removed .

Now both my DC need a new one so am looking for thoughts on best coats . They are for primary aged DC and we live rurally so warmth is essential.

I am looking at these - which I think I have seen recommended on here -

www.polarnopyret.co.uk/winterparka-60381828-483-6

( I like the fact they are unisex so I can definitely pass from DD to DS assuming the quality is as good as everyone says )

But obviously something like this is quite a bit cheaper -

m.boden.co.uk/en-gb/girls-coats-jackets/coats/g0629-nav/girls-navy-cosy-parka
( but wouldn’t pass from older DD to DS!)

Any advice ?
Open to other suggestions too as it’s a lot of money !

The best we've bought are those 3 in 1 jobs with a removable fleece. Got them in mountain warehouse. Warm, practical and waterproof

EscapeToTheMoon · 04/11/2018 08:49

Try Cotswold Outdoor. Great choice.

NoodieRoodie · 04/11/2018 08:54

For the last couple of years mine have had Trespass ski jackets and they've been wonderful. I bought a bit big and DS is in his second winter with his, Dd's has been passed onto a friend and still looks I'm excellent condition. I bought them sort of by accident in a closing down sale as they were such a good bargain but they've turned out to be exactly what I needed in a childrens winter coat.

Something like this

My dc are late teens now - their Polarn o Pyret coats are still going strong! Dd wore them, then ds and they are now on the second of my nephews. They're expensive but brilliant.

SinkGirl · 04/11/2018 17:31

PoP stuff is very good.

Just bought my toddlers some yellow coats from Asda - very warm and with a waterproof outside but not sure how waterproof they are. They're lovely.

onemouseplace · 04/11/2018 17:34

DD has that Boden parka and I'm not that impressed TBH - it's nowhere near as warm and thick as the one she had last year. Last year's one (and the one DS has) both had a much stiffer outer layer which was fairly waterproof, whereas that one is definitely worse quality.

happypotamus · 04/11/2018 17:37

I got DD's from Trespass in the sale when the shop was closing down. Looks a lot like this www.trespass.com/moonstar-girls-waterproof-jacket but I don't think hers is longer length like that one. Was sufficient for last winter's snow and I would recommend it.

Livedandlearned · 04/11/2018 17:38

There was a lovely waterproof rubbery coat in Sainsbury's on sale yesterday. That probably doesn't help

jjemimapuddleduck · 04/11/2018 17:44

It looks like the PoP one wouldn't be much more expensive once you take the 15% discount off (pop up). It looks much warmer (although I do prefer it in pink which doesn't help, I know!).

My kids are late primary now but we love Gap or M&Co for really warm waterproof padded coats and parkas.

jjemimapuddleduck · 04/11/2018 17:45

By the way, you must be down south, my kids have been in their winter coats for weeks and weeks!

Nousernameforme · 04/11/2018 18:00

We got the school coat this year for ds that is both water proof and warm but the hood is crap. I think most schools would do one it's the standard bit of kit. Outside of school we have an old mountain warehouse with removable fleece on the third boy now. Those things are indestructible.

Camomila · 04/11/2018 18:46

Ds has the yellow Asda coat with the removable inside bit - it seems pretty waterproof so far.
Not sure if it'll be warm enough come proper winter - if not i'll have a look in decathlon.

NeedAUsernameGenerator · 04/11/2018 19:33

I bought ski jackets for mine last year which have been great. DD2 is still wearing hers for this winter. www.trespass.com/girls/jackets/ski-jackets

SteggySawUs · 04/11/2018 19:41

Mountain warehouse every single time for every single child! Great for warm ski jackets and lighter weight ones. Always waterproof, hard wearing, nice colours and not too pricey (they always have a sale!!)

ScrambledSmegs · 04/11/2018 19:41

DD1 has a trespass parka, bought it last year I think it's the 'Fame'. It's really good - waterproof and very warm. Has fake fur on the hood but is detachable.

DD2 has a trespass ski jacket, but might their sales are so good I might get her a parka too.

We've had Boden and PoP in the past but trespass is our current choice.

RedCrab · 04/11/2018 20:00

Another Trespas fan. They always have great sales on, and their coats are great - really warm, wind proof and winter proof. DC have had their coats from Trespass for a few years now and they’re really hardy. Really can’t say really enough about how good they are Grin

RedCrab · 04/11/2018 20:05

This is the one I have for DD1 - she’s the kind that really feels the cold (as oppose to DS who can run around in a tshirt in winter!) She was happy as Larry in it, especially in the snow.

I second trespass ski jackets. Very warm and waterproof. Been buying them for years.

Thanks for replies am only just at home to catch up will check these out - Trespass sounds promising !
Yes we are down south ish - Gloucestershire. It’s still been mostly warm. But they probably will be wearing these coats as
Soon as I get them.

I really like my sons Landsend jackets. They seem really good quality and keep him warm. There is usually a discount code or money off regularly.

moredoll · 05/11/2018 03:35

Mountain Warehouse

TweeBee · 05/11/2018 04:36

Just a word of warning about Trespass. I ordered a new coat for DC from them 13 days ago, should have been with me in 7 days max but it hasn’t arrived yet and no response from them to multiple messages and emails. I see a lot of others are in the same position looking at their FB page.
We have had coats from them before which have been great, so I would just advise not buying direct from them.
