FFS washing machine just died. What do you have?

Managed one load of the weekend washing. Now the drum doesn't spin, load of half wet, half dry washing. Fortunately my neighbour let me use her machine to do that load.

So...what machine do you have? How long have you had it and have you had any issues with it or repairs done in that time?

Ours is 5 years old and I fear the cost of repairing will be not worth it.

A Bosch. We rent it because they kept dying (any brand, doesn't matter whether they're cheap or top of the range. They're all crap) so the cost of repair or replacement is included in the rental. We've had our current machine 2 years so far. We do a load a day.

Penguinsetpandas · 03/11/2018 21:02

We had two Hoover ones that have been great and one terrible Samsung ecobubble, left clothes soaking - gets good reviews so probably unlucky.

minipie · 03/11/2018 21:04

I have an LG direct drive which holds 12kg, fabulous.

It has needed the repairment out once in 7 years but I think it was the motor and that was covered by a 10 yr guarantee.

helacells · 03/11/2018 21:05

Miele. Going on 25 years now.

longtompot · 03/11/2018 21:10

We bought this one recently as our old one was so noisy on the spin, and then started giving off burning type smells. I love my new machine, the spin is so quiet I only know its happened as it makes a small ding when its finished. It was £100 cheaper when we bought it though.

Our machine did the same thing yours is doing, but we were skint, so DH googled it & found out that it was likely to be the heating element that had gone (I believe). He ordered a new one online, which was about £30 & fixed it himself. Took no more than an hour for him to fix himself & he said it was easy, too. Machine now as good as new.

Well worth a try before buying a new machine. Saves lots of money & feels like the green thing to do.

DaysDragonBy · 03/11/2018 21:40

Our machine is under a tumbler (are all washing machines suitable to go at the bottom of a tower?) and there is no way I can shift it on my own. I will check before I order a new one, but DH is convinced it won't be worth it.

What's with all the long wash times? My standard 40 wash is 1h24, standard 60 is 1h47 and the quick 60 is 58 mins. Most I 've looked at seems to have 3hours as a standard wash, is this the new normal?

Bosch. I think my current one dates back to DD having rotavirus, so that must mean I have had it about 12 years. I thought it was dying a few weeks ago, but did a DIY job on the filter, and it is fine again. I love it because it has a 90 degree wash (I gather these don't exist on modern machines, but they're brilliant). Wash times are not necessarily as shown on the display.

My mum has a Miele, which I am hoping to inherit Grin.

DrGradusAdParnassum · 03/11/2018 21:46

Will add that I do a load or two a day with my now ageing Bosch...

DrGradusAdParnassum · 03/11/2018 21:49

Finally, OP, have you Googled your machine and its problem? I did this with mine, and ended up with a YouTube tutorial about filter-clearance. As I say, I haven't had a problem since. My Bosch filter contained several Euros, some hair bobbles and general crap. You do need to put out a lot of old towels, though, to catch the manky water.

Japanesejazz · 03/11/2018 21:50

Beko , standard 40 wash, 50 mins, 10kg load, it was cheap as chips and I’ve had it 8 years. I’ll get my coat.....

anniehm · 03/11/2018 22:25

Five years seems about right, mine is on the blink at five years, failing to spin every other wash. I just buy the cheapest black one I can find, not worth paying more

anniehm · 03/11/2018 22:28

My wash times (beko) are the same as yours OP. I heard beko and Bosch are made in the same factory anyway

NoMalone · 03/11/2018 22:34

Also a Samsung 8kg ecobubble. Only since 6 days ago though when my 12 year old workhorse Zanussi died, i was told 10 years is as much as you can expect from a washing machine. Curry's delivered and fitted and took the old one away for €25. Which was a bargain. I can't get over how clean my laundry feels although the cycles are long and it sings to me! It beeps a tune every time you turn it on.

Topseyt · 03/11/2018 22:45

Bosch here. My last Bosch lasted 15 years with three kids, so at least a load a day.

New one is just over two years old. So far so good.

Dottierichardson · 03/11/2018 22:52

We have a Miele, had one before and it lasted about 8 years. It did go wrong in the first year but was fixed under warranty - had a faulty motor which was replaced. We did have a bit of a problem replacing it, we used John Lewis initially but they contract out now and the guys didn't like something, not even clear what now and refused to install. Did some research and seems this has happened a lot with JL lately. So we used a local company instead and they did it next day, took them about 15 minutes.

As we had fixed the issue that John Lewis initially told us was the problem and the local (accredited with Miele) installers said that they couldn't see a problem we also got a refund on the price difference from John Lewis - as the local place was more expensive - plus we got back the price of the minor work we had done that wasn't actually needed. But we made a huge, very polite, email to higher levels kind of fuss. So basically would not use John Lewis again for this kind of thing.

The new Miele is working beautifully, it was pricier than other brands but we've been through Hotpoints/Zanussi/Whirlpool and other brands in the past and they all either died early deaths or kept breaking down...so ended up costing us the same or more.

Dottierichardson · 03/11/2018 22:54

My mum has a Bosch and says they're brilliant and she is the kind of person who checks everything on Which and elsewhere but we don't live near a Bosch installer/retailer.

Ceilingrose · 04/11/2018 00:04

A Bosch. Mid price and reliable.

DramaAlpaca · 04/11/2018 00:11

I've a fairly basic Siemens, going strong for 14 years now.

OP, like a PP said way upthread if it's not spinning it could just be that the brushes need replacing. It's a DIY job & won't cost more than about £20.

ImHudsonHesHicks · 04/11/2018 00:35

I own a Hoover Dynamic one and whilst it has worked well and did it's job, it started randomly beeping and the lights flashing EVEN WHEN UNPLUGGED!!

It's only about a year and a half old and is now unfortunately possessed and needs an exorcism... what other explanation is there for the lights flashing and it beeping at me with no electricity supply?

safariboot · 04/11/2018 01:33

A Bosch washer-drier and we don't like it. The wash and especially the spin just seem to brutalise our clothes, everything comes out unbelievably creased and clothes are getting worn out like they never used to with our old machine.

DaysDragonBy · 04/11/2018 07:48

Ok, new stupid question:
My tumbler is currently on top of my washing machine. Does this mean that a new washing machine has to be the same size as the tumbler? The Bosch is 598 wide and 550mm deep.
My tumbler (Miele) is 596 wide and 643 deep.

Does this mean I'd be better going for a Miele?

IncomingCannonFire · 04/11/2018 07:58

We have a Samsung ecobubble 8kg, but have already had to replace the drive engine. It was still in warranty then which saved us the cost of replacement but isn't ideal.
You can get a stacker tray kit thingy so they don't have to be the same size.

Vitalogy · 04/11/2018 08:02

That I can remember, I've had a couple of Indesit and a Zanussi, first Indesit lasted about 10yrs, same with Zanussi. On my second Indesit now, around 5yrs I think. I haven't paid more than £250, avoid fancy digital, more to go wrong.

I leave the washer door and drawer open slightly when not in use.

Vitalogy · 04/11/2018 08:03

Nice of your neighbour btw.
