What's the most dangerous thing you have survived?

Curious about all kinds of narrow squeaks, really. I find it fascinating because they can be dramatic or terrifying like a car accident or being held up at knifepoint, or something that happens in the blink of an eye and death/ serious damage is averted thanks to sheer good luck! I seem to have had a fair few of the latter experiences (falls off horses, best friend pulling me out of the way of a bus by a hair's breadth, etc) but no big event.

I love how tough human beings are and what we can survive. What's the maddest and baddest thing you have survived?

Being born 3 months early Smile

NuttierThanSquirrelShit · 01/11/2018 15:43

Sepsis.

sweetkitty · 01/11/2018 15:44

Probably being born 2 and a bit months early 40 odd years ago nearly died.

Childbirth x 4 maybe

I’m quite risk averse

MrsSpenserGregson · 01/11/2018 15:44

For me it's a toss-up between anaphylaptic shock and giving birth

cjt110 · 01/11/2018 15:46

Having meningitis at 3 weeks old.

My parents were told if they had any religious affiliations, to get me christened/whatever immediately as they didn't suspect I'd last the night. I was christened in the sink.

cjt110 · 01/11/2018 15:46

Oh, and 15 brain operations and being in a coma.

VintageFur · 01/11/2018 15:47

My car being pinned to the front of An hgv on the motorway and when it dislodged I was thrown 3 lanes across the motorway into the central reservation.

I remember sitting with my hands on the wheel saying "not like this".

Damage? Wing mirror came off. I got back in and drove home, phoned work and poured myself a stiff drink.

Luckily if been running very late so there wasn't traffic - I dread to think what would've happened if all three lanes had been busy.

Got ambushed by 5 men with knives in Bangkok down a dead-end alleyway. I was so angry I'm not quite sure they knew what to make of me - and I got away.

Pearofwisdom · 01/11/2018 15:47

Car crash, spun around a few times on dual carriage way and came to a stop facing oncoming traffic directly. Car smashed into front of me and completely crushed it. Had I come to a stop sideways I'd likely be dead.

Jackreacherswife · 01/11/2018 15:48

Pretty outing, I rolled old style mini end over end two and a half times, ending up on its roof. I had to break the window to get out. I got myself out of the car, walked away with only cuts and bruises, a broken nose and a fracture to my sternum. So frickin lucky. Once wasn't my time.

vampirethriller · 01/11/2018 15:48

Sepsis and attempted murder.

MrsJayy · 01/11/2018 15:50

I took an allergic reaction in the middle of an operation when I was 19 i was in intensive care for 5 days that was a bit dicey , I was born with a disability so childhood was always a challange.

seastargirl · 01/11/2018 15:50

Placental abruption at home, lost a huge amount of blood, got to hospital and baby delivered within 35 minutes, she was resuscitated and amazingly survived unscathed. I had 11 units of blood and was bought back from the brink.

lolaflores · 01/11/2018 15:50

reading this from behind the couch. Jesus christ. Guardian angels working overtime there. I have never been close to any of the above and give thanks to whatever is keeping it that way.
Fate. Unlucky. The general chaos of life, the universe. Randomness.
Mind boggling

3TresTrois · 01/11/2018 15:51

Car crash on the motorway. Car flipped over, smashed through the central reservation and ended up on the wrong side of the road upside down facing oncoming traffic Shock.

I abd the other passenger were completely unscathed physically (although couldn’t get in a car for years afterwards and I’m still a very nervous passenger).

PivotPivotPIVOTTT · 01/11/2018 15:52

HELLP syndrome. Both me and baby lucky to have survived it was very close Sad

MrsJayy · 01/11/2018 15:52

I was - close to being rammed into a wall by a car I dropped my purse and had to pick it up and a car crashed into the wall i was walking too Shock

mostdays · 01/11/2018 15:52

Childbirth probably!

There was a time as a 17 year old I had taken a lot of speed the night before and was getting ready for work in the morning mid horrific come down, when suddenly I could not take a breath in and it felt like my heart was refusing to beat. My friend who was with me said my face starting going grey and odd, I know my vision was fading to black. As suddenly as it started it finished and I could take a breath but it was quite scary.

Loads of work situations. I'm in mental health now, used to work in drugs services, supported housing and children's services. It's a rare week I don't make enemies of someone with a history of violence and have stopped taking threats seriously tbh!

Car crash when the caravan we were towing got blown about by the down-draught from an overtaking lorry. Car ended up on top of the caravan-walked out without a scratch.

Coach fire-the steps were on fire by the time we got to the front of the coach, had to jump out. Again, not a scratch.

Ragwort · 01/11/2018 15:53

Capsizing whilst white water rafting in Colorado for the first time - DH had 'encouraged' me to try something different, it was not my sort of thing at all, after we were rescued we were told 'well done, someone died here last week'Shock.

I am so, so glad that I had listened carefully to the safety briefing and that I remembered what to do when we went overboard.

Worst thing is you had to get back in the boat to finish the trip as there was no other way out. Never again.

Yousignup · 01/11/2018 15:55

Me, nothing, but my parents survived a civil war.

witherwings · 01/11/2018 15:57

Almost sliding off a cliff on a snowy road.
A train crash

PoisonousSmurf · 01/11/2018 15:57

Born early and only 2lb in weight in the late 60s and then a nurse put my feeding tube in my lungs. Almost didn't make it.

Jumping in the deep end as a toddler. Got rescued by a stranger, my parents didn't even notice

Rode through wet grass when I was 7 and towards a steep gorge on my bicycle and of course brakes didn't work. Managed to fall off and bike went over edge.

Made friends with the nice 'Orange dog, in the local woods (was living in Switzerland at the time). Turned out it was a rabid fox!

Had a moped in my teenage years. Rode it mostly at night down country lanes. Was always falling off it and also skidded on black ice, missing a passing car by inches.
Finally gave it up, when I crashed into a hedge because a car driver was trying to reverse back around a blind bend! Only had a badly sprained ankle, but I had to walk to a nearby house that had a phone box outside. The house owners took pity on me and took me home as my parents didn't drive (this was in the 80s)

Not really had that many 'narrow misses' since childhood really.

Sohardtochooseausername · 01/11/2018 15:58

I was caught up in 7/7 bombings. Feel my guardian angel was at work that day.

StylishMummy · 01/11/2018 15:59

Highly outing to anyone who knows me...

Meningitis

Respiratory failure during pregnancy whilst having one lung (lung function down to 20%) - twice

Having a lung removed at 1 week old

Scoliosis surgery whilst having one lung (there is a risk of a lung collapsing)

Oh and a near drowning aged 3

Inarightpickleandchutney · 01/11/2018 15:59

Being held up at knifepoint at an ATM by a group of men. Surround me, couldn’t see anything, one of them was polishing his meat cleaver. I was 8.5 months pregnant at the time.
Screamed my head off at full volume and got cut a little bit before they ran off to a waiting car.
Thank goodness it wasn’t as dramatic as some of these stories Flowers
